Cold Chapter one
1875- She ran as fast as she could. Her bare feet getting cut as she landed on sharp rocks and pieces of twigs. She pushed through the thick branches of the forest. She was off the trail but it didn’t matter to her; she had to escape. She turned her head to look behind her. Suddenly she bumped into someone and she fell on her back. She gasped in horror as she looked up.
“Don’t look so surprised Agatha,” the tall young man with golden brown shoulder length hair and grey eyes said with a smile. He grabbed the woman’s red hair locks and forced her to stand up.
“Please Joseph,” Agatha cried in a scared whisper.
“But why not?” Joseph said drawing her close. “It will only take a second, witch.” He pressed his lips to hers and her skin turned blue and cold as ice. He let go of her and she fell to the ground smashing into tiny pieces of ice. “Thank you for your youth.”
“Not so fast Joseph,” a man in a red robe shouted. Joseph conjured an energy ball, but before he could send it at the man, he screamed and became a white mist which the man trapped in an old book. The man finished his chanting and glanced down at the words which glowed red for a moment. ****
“Yeah?” Cole said as he held down the green button.
“A Miss Phoebe Halliwell is here to see you,” a lady’s voice informed.
“Send her in,” Cole said. He quickly smoothed out his jet black hair and leaned back in the chair. “Three…two…one…”
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Phoebe demanded as she barged into Cole’s office.
“Nice to see you too and if you don’t mind, keep your voice down this is an office.”
Phoebe looked at him with her famous does-it-look-like-I-care face. “Cole, what are you up to?”
“What does it look like?” Cole gestured around the office. “I just found out from Elise that you’ve been back in the law business for the past two months.”
“Elise, how is she?”
“What are you up to Cole?” she demanded impatiently.
“Why do you always accuse me of being evil?”
“Because I know you Cole, you always end up playing for the other side and you know why? Because you’re evil. Evil’s in your blood and you can’t escape that no matter how hard you try.”
Cole smiled. “You’re wrong Phoebe. Zoey doesn’t have a problem-”
“Don’t bring her into this. That was different. No matter how hard you try to prove to me-”
“I’m so past that,” Cole interrupted.
“Mr. Turner, your five o’clock is here.”
“Thank you Jeanine.” Cole looked up at Phoebe. “It’s been nice but I have a job to get back to.”
Jeanine stepped aside and Zoey entered the office in black slacks and stiletto heels with a pale pink blouse.
“Phoebe, what are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same question.”
“Listen Phoebe,” Cole said, “I need to get on with this interview because I’ve got another meeting at six.”
“I also have some homework that I need to do,” Zoey added.
******
“You what?!” Piper exclaimed.
Zoey sighed, “Piper, it’s just until I find another job. Piper, I need the money.”
“But working with Cole?” Paige said.
“He’s letting me work with him and I’m going to get paid really good money.”
“I’m with Paige on this one,” Chris said. “I don’t want you anywhere near him; I don’t trust him.”
“I do though. Look, he took care of me when I was in the underworld and like it’s only temporary.”
Paige nodded. “Well I’ve got to get to work. Piper I need a lift, my car’s still in the shop. This tune up is hell for my wallet I’ll tell ya.”
“Alright; I’ll be back to discuss your new career so don’t go anywhere.”
Zoey sighed and the two sisters left. “Chris, I’ll be fine,” she said to the look he gave her.
He smiled faintly and put his hands on her hips. “I know, it’s just-”
“Just what?” Zoey asked curiously as she put her arms around his neck.
“Be careful,” he said and kissed her lips gently. Zoey smiled and kissed him back passionately.
It had only been three weeks since she had returned. Life was different; she felt so overwhelmed because she wanted to catch up on time that had been lost. She was finally in college and enjoying the atmosphere and the people there. College was taking up a lot of her time so she had to in a way schedule time to hang out with Jake, Bryan and Tina who called her every night since she got back. She still hadn’t decided if she should tell Bryan about what she really was. She wasn’t going to tell Tina at least not until she came home for the Holidays- she had been accepted to North Eastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
When she had gone to visit Jake for the first time in three months he hugged her so tightly she though she wouldn’t be able to breathe. When she had visited Bryan, whom attended San Francisco State University with her and Jake, he had done the same thing then scolded her for running off and not inviting him to go along. She had to lie and tell him that she had gone to see the sister of Summer, her past foster parent.
It felt odd that she had been gone for such a long time. It seemed like she was living her life for the first time ever. Between classes, Jake, Bryan and homework, Zoey spent time with her boyfriend. She had missed Chris so much and wanted to make up for lost time. On top of that she found out that she had been replaced at the coffee house; that’s when she had phoned Cole to schedule the interview.
Chris tucked Zoey’s hair behind her ear. “Are you busy right now?” he asked and kissed her neck.
Zoey smiled, “No, why?”
Chris kissed her neck again. Zoey kissed him then pulled away. “Piper will be back soon.”
“Right,” Chris said and kissed her again.

“Alright, so you have all the works of old: history, art, biographies, myths, legends, etc.” the short stubby man with hardly any hair informed as he and Paige entered a room full of books. The room had an old musty scent to it and there were only two windows located in the back of the room. The sunlight shined through them and tiny particles of dust could be seen floating along in the air.
“You’re job is to index all the books that come in,” he continued pointing to an old computer that was in the corner of the room seated on top of a small oak desk. “The system is pretty simple. You index by author: last name first then first name last; title and category, then type in their pin number that’s located on the inside front cover. Then you’ll stack them on the shelf according to category and in alphabetical order. Got that?”
Paige forced a smile. “Yes Mr. Kowalski.”
Mr. Kowalski studied her for a moment then left her to her work. Paige glanced around the book filled room and sighed. She took off her purse and jacket. “Well this should be fun,” she said sarcastically.
The hours seemed to pass way too slowly to be real. It was her fifth day of work and already she was about to go out of her mind. Paige felt like she had spent an eternity locked up in that little room indexing book after book after musty book. Paige massaged the temples of her fair skinned forehead. She sighed and glanced at the clock in the bottom right corner of her computer screen. It was already five o’clock and she had barely gotten through the day’s work. Paige sighed again, saved her recent work to a disk then decided to take some books home and work there. She picked up a huge stack of books and with the help of another intern, put them into the trunk of her car.

Paige was busily reading one of the old books that she had brought home. It was Dante’s Canterbury Tales which she found to be very interesting. This was also a problem she stumbled upon: she some times ended up reading the books she was indexing or she would flip through the pages admiring the various complex illustrations.
Zoey walked in looking very professional in a black pin stripped skirt that hit below her knees and she wore a light blue tank top blouse and black high heels. Zoey plopped onto the couch and sighed.
“How was your day?” Paige asked curiously.
“It was ok. I did filing; I hate filing.”
Paige smiled, “Ditto. I’ve been indexing for six hours.”
Zoey smiled and glanced at the book in Paige’s hand. “Canterbury Tales, that’s a good book.”
“Yeah, it’s not too bad from what I’ve read.”
Chris orbed in just then. “Paige, have you seen Leo?”
Paige shook her head, “No.”
Chris nodded then walked over to Zoey. “Hey,” he said and kissed her on the lips.
“Hey,” she said with a smile.
“I like the outfit,” he complemented placing an arm around her waist and kissing her cheek.
“It makes me feel sophisticated,” Zoey said and leaned her head against his shoulder. The two continued to be cuddly with each other and whisper things to each other.
“Sorry to interrupt this you little love sick ways,” Paige said, “but Zoey, can you read this? It’s in some kind of bazaar language.” Paige handed Zoey a large sized leather bound book.
Zoey glanced at the cover then opened it revealing strange wording. “Hmm, it looks like it’s in Romanian,” Zoey said after a little while.
“Can you read it?” Paige asked.
Paige looked at Zoey. “Um, in English please?”
“Oh right. It says when youth fails he seeks those whose youth radiates brightly. The icy kiss of death he gives he gives to his victims. Their bodies blue and cold as ice, their youth transacted to him guaranteeing him the appearance of a young handsome man until twelve hours pass. Yet if he takes the youth of three powerful witches, his youth is guaranteed for life.”
The room suddenly became cold and Zoey’s eyes became violet. She held her hands to her head and cried out in pain.
Her head felt like it was being crushed.
“What the hell is going on?” Paige asked standing up in alarm. The whole room kept dropping in temperature. The floors and furniture became icy. Zoey screamed and as she did a man with shoulder length golden brown hair and grey eyes appeared out of a thick pale blue mist that came out of the book. Zoey fainted.
“Ah, it’s about time,” Joseph said as he took a glance around the room. “Only, it’s much later than I had expected.
Anyways, I am grateful to the unconscious.” He blinked out. The room went back to normal when he left.
Chris placed his hands over Zoey trying to heal her in vain. “Damn it!” he cursed. Of course he knew it wouldn’t work, it never worked when she was like this.
“What’s wrong with her?” Paige asked concerned.
“Certain things tend to make her whole connection with the earth tweak and cause her to pass out from the pain that she feels.”
“What? How long has she been like this?”
“Since she disappeared. Look, you can’t tell Phoebe and Piper. Leo doesn’t want you three to worry about her.”
“Worry about her? Chris, she’s unconscious. Not to admit that Phoebe will find out because she’s an empath.”
“Actually, Leo gave her the blocking potion. An attack that Zoey suffers from- Phoebe wouldn’t be able to handle it. It could kill her, but with Zoey it’s different; a lot of things are different now that she’s fully come into her Amazonian powers. She’s stronger and able to withstand the pain.” Chris picked Zoey up off of the couch and orbed to her bedroom.
Paige came down the stairs soon afterwards with a damp wash cloth. When she came in, Chris was stroking Zoey’s hair. He picked up her left arm and placed his thumb at her wrist to feel her pulse. He glanced at his watch.
Paige kneeled down beside the bed and patted Zoey’s forehead with the damp cloth. “How long is she usually out for?”
“Five to fifteen minutes. Last week she scared me half to death: she was out for five hours. I couldn’t wake her.”
Paige sighed. She didn’t like this one bit. “Has Leo ever tried healing her? Maybe he can work his elder magic.”
“He’s tried, I’ve tried, even the asses up there tried and nothing’s worked. All we can do is wait and make sure that her pulse remains steady.” He glanced at Paige. “Makes one feel pretty useless, huh?”
Paige patted Chris’ shoulder. “I’m going to check the Book of Shadows for our new little friend. You think you’ll be fine here?”
Chris nodded and as he did, Zoey woke with a gasp. “The demon,” she began as she sat up.
“No, you lay down,” Chris said ushering her to lie down. She brushed his hands away from her. “No, the demon, we have to-”
“Paige is going to check-”
“You don’t understand, I’m the cause that it’s out. I need to help. So move and-”
“Shut up,” Chris said which made Zoey do just that. “It’s my turn to take charge now lay back down. We’ve got it under control.”
“I’ll be in the attic,” Paige said. “You rest.”
Zoey sighed when Paige left. “I’ll just help a lit-”
“NO, now lay down, you’re weak. Enough of the stubbornness do as you’re told.”
“I’m not stubborn.”
Chris gave her a look.
“You know,” she said with a seductive smile. “You’re really cute when you get all bossy like that.”
“OH really, you like that?” he said scooting closer to her. She nodded, “Yeah, it turns me on.” She began to kiss his neck and nibble his ear.
“It won’t work,” Chris said.
Zoey glared at him. “Fine, you win. Happy?”
“Ecstatic,” he replied and kissed her cheek.
Paige was busy flipping through the pages of the Book of Shadows which were yellow with age around the edges. She let out a frustrated sigh. The pages then began flipping by themselves and landed on what she wanted.
“Thank you,” Paige said.
“You’re welcome,” a voice said. Soon Penny appeared in white lights.
“Grams!” Paige said walking over to her and giving Penny a hug.
“Paige, how are you?” Penny asked looking her grand daughter up and down.
“Well I’d be a hell of a lot better-”
“If Joseph wasn’t on the loose?” Penny finished.
“Ah so that would be the demon.”
“Oh no dear, not a demon: a warlock and a very powerful one I might add; very dangerous.”
Paige frowned. “Great, this is my entire fault. If I hadn’t asked Zoey to read the book then none of this would have happened.”
“Zoey? She’s back- you found her? How is she?”
“That’s right, you didn’t- we assumed that you knew. She’s fine…kind of.”
“Well, what does that mean?”
“It’s a long story but I can give you the reader’s digest version: Zoey is really an Amazon princess. The elders wiped away her memory; she has developed new strengths along with a new power over the earth. She’s been back for about three weeks or so.”
“Wait a minute, she can control all four elements?”
Paige nodded. “Yeah, but this newest power is really taking a toll on her body.”
“Well I’d assume it would seeing as she’s connected to the earth. It’s not a day in the park that’s for sure.” Penny paused then looked at Paige. “She can sense things right?”
“Yeah,” Paige said looking at her grandmother suspiciously. “Well maybe she will be able to sense Joseph.”
“I don’t think so,” Paige explained. “His being released from the book almost sent her into a coma.”
“But we don’t have a choice. We can’t afford to waste anytime in scrying. He drains the life of people.”
“What the hell are you doing?” Chris demanded as he entered the kitchen. “I leave one second and you and you disappear on me.”
“Excuse me for needing Tylenol,” Zoey said dumping white pills into her palm.
“I just worry that’s all,” Chris said and grabbed her hand. “Three?”
“My head feels like someone chucked a bowling ball at it.”
“Only two.”
Zoey sighed as he took a pill from her. “Happy?”
He kissed her cheek and she gulped the pills down with water. Just then Penny and Paige walked into the “Penny!” Zoey said giving the woman a hug.
“OH Zoey, it’s good to see you. Look at you, beautiful as ever.”
Zoey blushed. “So, how are you?”
“As good as being dead gets,” Penny joked. Her smile faded. “Normally I wouldn’t ask you to do something that would cause you harm but we really need to find Joseph and we need you to do it.”
“What?! No, that’s out of the question.”
“Chris, we have no other choice. We tried scrying,” Paige said.

“Well this is nice,” Piper said sarcastically. “The only time the whole family is together in almost four months is to find a demon.”
“Honey, we talked about this,” Leo said standing behind his wife and placing his hands on her shoulders. Piper rolled her eyes. “Let’s do this.”
“Phoebe are you sure you’ll be able to sense with Zoey?” Paige asked.
Phoebe nodded. “Yup. Hopefully we’re done by six. I’m meeting Jason for dinner.”
“What, I thought you were dining with us tonight,” Piper said.
Phoebe smiled guiltily. “I know sweetie but with the wedding plans and work, Jason and I want some alone time. How about tomorrow night?”
Piper nodded with a faint smile.
“Alright,” Paige said clapping her hands together. “Let’s get this show on the road shall we?”
“You’ll be alright,” Phoebe said. “Sensing him will fill you with his feelings but it’ll be alright.”
Zoey nodded. Shows how little you know she thought to herself.
Phoebe grabbed Zoey’s hands and the two closed their eyes. All thoughts disappeared from Zoey and she felt the air ripple as Piper tucked her hair behind her ear. She felt each person inhale and exhale. She then felt the ground tremble with the footsteps of the passerby outside along with the van that passed by. She felt as a gardener dug into the earth to make room for his magnolias. Then she felt him.
Phoebe felt a sharp pain in her head. Zoey was screaming and her hands tore free from Phoebe’s grasp.
“What’s happening?” Piper asked alarmed as she rushed over to Zoey who was crying and screaming in so much pain. Leo held Piper back. The house shook from all of Zoey’s pain.
“Zoey,” Chris said grabbing hold of her for she was rolling on the floor in pain. “Zoey,” he said again. Another jolt of pain surged through her body with a white hot sting that she pushed Chris away with so much force that he flew across the room and landed on top of the potions table breaking it with his fall. Zoey stopped crying and the pain slowly resided. Her body was weak and she was extremely tired. Chris got up and rushed over to Zoey and grabbed her hand. She smiled faintly as he stroked her hair and whispered to her.
“Will someone please tell me what the hell is going on here?” Piper demanded.
“No time, I know where he is,” Phoebe said.
“Alright, let’s go,” Paige said and the sisters left the house in a rush.
Leo let out a sigh and glanced at Zoey. “Oh geeze,” he said as walking over to her noticing that she had blood dripping from her nose. He healed her quickly, concern flooding his face.
Zoey smiled faintly and closed her tired heavy eyes. “I don’t like this,” Leo said as he stroked Zoey’s hair.
“Neither do I,” Chris said with a sigh. “It seems to only be getting worse.”
Leo nodded in agreement but said nothing.
“Leo,” Penny said after a while. This whole time she had just watched in a horrified silence as Zoey had cried out in pain. “We need to talk.”
Leo sighed as he paced the attic. Chris had taken Zoey down to her room and was keeping watch over her while she slept. “What do you want me to do?” he said. “I’ve tried almost everything and nothing’s worked.”
“Leo, we need to consider stripping her of that power,” Penny said.
“No, I’m not going to do that,” Leo said. “I’m in no position to do that.”
“You’re her white lighter and are supposed to be protecting her from harm. This power of hers is going to keep growing and taking her down with it.”
“I know that,” Leo said bitterly. He turned to Penny. “What am I supposed to do? All of the elders couldn’t even strip her of her powers.”
“Well I suggest that you find a way,” Penny said folding her arms across her chest. “Leo, she’s only 19, that’s too young to die.”
“Die? NO one said anything about dying.”
“Well if something isn’t done that could end up a result of a shift in the earth. Think about it Leo.” She sighed. “I love that girl as much as you do but you have to consider the serious consequences that could come from bearing such a power as this.”
“If she couldn’t handle it she wouldn’t have it,” Leo said.
“Oh Leo stop going by that rule pish posh,” Penny exclaimed. “It’s not natural nor is it physically impossible to have control over all four elements. This latest power is proving just that. Not to mention that she might be emotionally tied to the earth.” Penny sighed again. “Talk with her mother, find out exactly why Zoey has all of these powers.”
Leo nodded. End of chapter three

I'm with Grams. “Are you sure this is the place?” Paige asked as she glanced around the tree covered area.
“Positive,” Phoebe glancing around. The sunlight streamed faintly through the thick leaves of the tall trees giving the place a tranquil look and feeling. “I recognize this place anywhere,” Phoebe continued. “Mom took us camping all the time out here.”
“That’s right,” Piper said. “I almost forgot.”
“By the way, what happened to Zoey?” Phoebe asked changing the subject as they continued to walk through the woody park. “I felt nothing as she was screaming out in pain which is odd because I can usually sense her.”
“Chris said it has something to do with her new…power,”
Paige stopped abruptly after hearing a crunching sound under her feet.
Piper sniffed the air. “What’s that horrible stench?” She looked down and saw different sized shards of ice on the ground. She bent down and picked up one of the blue shards of ice that looked peculiar. “Oh gross!” she exclaimed and quickly dropped the ice piece and shook her hand as if to help rid her of the disgusting matter she had just touched. “Eww! Eww! A pregnant woman should so not have to go through this!”
“What is it?” Paige asked.
“It’s not ice that’s for sure,” Piper said still disgusted. “I mean, its ice but its frozen human pieces.”
“Oh god,” Paige said. “I think I’m going to be sick.”
*****
“Come on Atwood!” Zoey shouted as she ran. She smiled and came to a slow halt. The cool air was refreshing to her face which was flushed from the long run.
Bryan came running up behind her panting. He ran a hand through his jet black hair. “That was…long, too long,” he said.
Zoey laughed at him. “Oh come on, we’ve been doing this for who knows how long.”
“Look who’s talking,” Bryan said looking at Zoey with his brown eyes. “If I remember correctly, you used to act the same way.”
“Yeah well now I’m beating you so I have to rub it in your face.”
Bryan laughed and hugged Zoey. “Since I’m losing I have to rub you with sweat.”
“Eww!” she said and smacked him in the arm. “That’s disgusting!” The two burst into laughter.
“Alright out with it,” Bryan said. “It’s not like I don’t already know.”
“You know?” Zoey said surprised.
“Of course,” Bryan said. “I know that you’re incredibly unhappy with Chris and have been wanting to hook up with me all along. You can’t fight lust Zoey.”
Zoey smiled, “You’re so right. I can’t seem to control myself.” She laughed. “No but seriously there’s something that I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
“What? Are you really a lesbian because in all honesty you can kiss all the girls you want and I won’t mind one bit. In fact, I encourage you to kiss them and in front of me.”
Zoey laughed. “Sorry to shatter your fantasies but that’s not it. I don’t know how else to say it so I’m just going to come out with it. Bryan, I’m a witch.”
Bryan laughed. “Cute, now are you going to tell me or what?”
“I’m not lying,” Zoey said. “Here, I’ll even prove it to you.” Zoey glanced around and saw that no one was around. She held out her hand and a bright green fire ball appeared in her hand.
Bryan’s jaw dropped as he stepped back. “How- How did you do that?”
“It’s a power of mine. One of my powers.”
“You-how long?”
“Um, just the past year. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know how you would handle it.”
Bryan didn’t say anything, instead, he simply stood there staring at her in bewilderment.
Zoey smiled faintly. “If you don’t want anything to do with me I completely understand.”
“So you’re a witch,” Bryan said. “It’s different that’s for sure but you’re still Zoey right?”
Zoey smiled and nodded, “Right. I haven’t changed at all just I can do things others can’t.”
Bryan hugged her. “Wait, did you really visit Summer’s cousin?”
Zoey shook her head. “No actually, I met my mother: she’s a b!tch and oh I’m an Amazon.”
“Alright!” Bryan said. “Hey so there is really an island of hot women?”
“Well I’m the hottest of course.”
Bryan laughed. “So how did this happen?”
“My mother and father are of magic blood so you can do the math.”
“Wow, this is-” Bryan flew back and smacked into a tree.
Zoey whipped around and saw Joseph smiling as he lowered his arm. “I have to tell you that the last witch gave me some good things.”
Zoey threw a fire ball at him but he held up his hand and deflected it with a blue shield. The fire ball bounced off and headed right for Zoey. She caught it and tried to throw it at him again but before she could do anything he sent her flying backwards.
“I’m not going to let you kill me,” Joseph said with a vicious smile. “Instead, I’m going to give you witches what you gave me.” Joseph picked up Bryan by the neck.
“No!” Zoey yelled and ran forward. Joseph raised and hand and clenched his fist. Zoey grabbed at her throat trying to get rid of the invisible force that was squeezing her neck.
“Not so fast my lady,” he said with a smile. “I want you to watch this, take it as an example of what will be happening to you and your little friends.” Joseph kissed Bryan on the lips and Bryan slowly became pale.
Zoey tried to muster up wind but she could barely breathe and she was becoming dizzy and light headed.
Bryan’s lips became a deep bluish purple color and his skin became an icy blue. Zoey was crying as she tried to get free. She could see Bryan struggling to breathe and slowly he closed his eyes. Zoey tried to scream but couldn’t.
Joseph laughed and dropped Bryan’s lifeless body on the ground. He let go of Zoey and she coughed up blood. “He didn’t shatter, only those of magic I shatter. Till we meet again.” He blinked out.
“Leo!” Zoey screamed as she crawled over to Bryan. “Bryan wake up!” she placed her lips to his and gave him two rescue breaths.
Leo and Chris orbed in and rushed over. Zoey was still vainly giving Bryan CPR. “Zoey,” Leo said.
“NO! he’s not dead.” She gave him another breath. “He wasn’t even a witch!”
“Zoey stop,” Chris said holding her shoulders.
Zoey pushed him away. “Don’t touch me!” she screamed.
Chris forced her away from Bryan’s body. Zoey hit him and tried to push away. “Let go of me, Chris I have to save him.”
“Zoey stop,” Chris said holding her tightly. “Bryan’s gone.”
“No, I can still save him,” she said hitting him again and again. Soon she went limp in his arms and broke into tears. Chris held Zoey and felt her body tremble from her crying. The whole time he held her, time seemed to be at a stand still. In his arms was his weeping lover and only a few feet from him lay a friend, frozen and forever innocent.

Paige’s jaw dropped as her eldest sister told her over the phone about what happened to Bryan.
“Oh my God, is-is Zoey…how is she?”
“I don’t really know,” Piper said as she glanced at the closed door to the basement. “She locked herself in the room after the cops left. She put a charm on it and everything so that we can’t get in there. Can you blame her though? Bryan and her, you know how they were. They were really tight with each other just like she is with Tina and Jake.”
Paige sighed and put a hand to her head as she leaned back in her chair behind her desk at work. “This is all my fault.”
“No it isn’t Paige,” Piper said as she folded the kitchen towel that she had been drying the dishes with.
“If I hadn’t had Zoey read the book then-”
“You didn’t know and neither did she.”
Paige was quiet for a moment. “What did you tell the police?”
Piper crossed the kitchen and pulled out the casserole from the oven. “Well, by the time the police reached the park, Leo had been able to thaw- sorry, that’s morbid- anyways you get the picture. The only thing is that the corner had to do an autopsy even though we said that it was heart failure.”
Paige nodded as she listened to this. “What are we going to do about this?”
“To be honest, I have no idea,” Piper said.
“Something’s bothering you besides this,” Paige said noting the tone of Piper’s voice.
Piper sighed, “I’m just really worried that’s all. This thing is after powerful witches and he seems to be getting more powerful. Leo took Wyatt to magic school to stay there until we figure this out. But Paige, I keep thinking about what he did to Bryan and I’m scared. Bryan wasn’t a witch, imagine what Joseph will do to us.”
“He won’t be doing anything to us if I can help it,” Paige said firmly. “I won’t let him, we won’t let him get the chance.” She sighed. “I’m on my way home, see you in a little bit.”
“Alright, be safe,” Piper said and hung up the phone.

Zoey hugged Mr. and Mrs. Atwood and gave them her condolences.
Mrs. Atwood smiled through her tears as she held Zoey’s hands. “He loved you Zoey and I don’t think he’d want you to be feeling like you were the cause of it.”
Zoey smiled but couldn’t speak because of the tight lump that was in her throat.
“Here, I found this in his room, he got it for your birthday,” Mr. Atwood said handing her a beautiful dark green gift bag with maroon colored tissue paper.
Zoey nodded as she took the bag. “Thank you,” she said.
They smiled and left her standing there in the cemetery by his grave. The rain poured heavily and those at the funeral were huddled under black umbrellas, wiping their tears, and giving their condolences.
“Oh God Zoey,” Tina said and hugged her best friend. Her mascara streamed down in rivers of black tears. “I can’t believe he’s gone.” She broke down and Adam, another friend of theirs, led her away.
Jake walked up to her and stood beside her staring down at the fresly dug grave. His green eyes filled with tears.
“Jake,” Zoey said, her voice cracking with the tears that she had been trying so hard to hold back.
“I know,” he said quietly and hugged her tightly.
“It’s all my fault,” she cried into his shoulder. “If I hadn’t read the book, if I wasn’t a witch.”
“No,” Jake said looking her in the eye. She looked down but he pushed her chin up with his forefinger. “Look at me Zoey,” he said, tears streaming down his cheeks. Zoey didn’t look at him. “Look at me,” he repeated. His eyes met her tear filled eyes. “This is not your fault Zoey Marie Aguilar, do you understand me?”
“But-”
“No. You didn’t know, no one knew.” He hugged her again and kissed her wet hair. Zoey closed her eyes and stayed with her arms around her best friend.
“Zoey,” Chris said walking up to them. “Hey Jake.”
“Hey,” Jake said letting go of Zoey.
“Zoey, um, something’s come up and we need your help; I hate to ask you but-”
Zoey shook her head and dried her eyes with the tips of her fingers. “No, I don’t care.”
“Zoey, I know that-”
“No Chris. I don’t want to help.”
“We need you though; there was another attack and we need all the help we can get.”
“Well you’re out of luck because I quit.”
“What? You can’t do that,” Chris said.
“Can and just did,” Zoey said coolly.
“Zoey, it’s not something you can quit.”
“Well I quit. Look, I didn’t ask for this. My life was fine for 17 almost 18 years then all of a sudden my life changes drastically. My boyfriend ends up a homicidal demon and murders my family and several other people. Now Bryan is dead because of me.” Zoey wiped away her tears that escaped. “I can’t stand it anymore. My life is all screwed up because I’m a witch.”
“Oh, I see,” Chris said hurt by her words but completely understanding where she was coming from. He knew exactly how she felt. It was an all too familiar feeling.
“I’m sorry,” Zoey whispered and walked away quickly.
Chris sighed and watched as she walked off.
“Give her time,” Jake said.
Chris nodded and Jake walked away. He sighed and glanced at the grave and stood there for a while just watching the rain hit the dirt.

“Well can you blame her?” Jason said when they had gathered back at the manor. “She has been through a lot.”
“But we’ve been through way more,” Piper pointed out. “We were given powers to help protect the innocent. Its destiny and you can’t just quit that, believe me I know.”
“No, you can’t, but we weren’t 18 when we received our powers,” Phoebe pointed out quietly. The others thought about this for a while until the phone rang.
“I’ll get it,” Paige said getting up off of the couch.
“What I think we should focus on now is when Joseph will attack and where,” Leo said.
“An hour ago, near Pier 31,” Paige informed. “That was Darryl.”
“Ok, ok all we have to do to figure out his next move is to see if there is a pattern in his killings,” Piper said.
“Whatever pattern it is, he threw us off when he killed Bryan,” Chris said. A knock came at the door just then.
“Jake, what are you doing here? Where’s Zoey?” Piper asked as she opened the door.
“Zoey’s gone,” Jake blurted.
“What? What do you mean gone?” Piper exclaimed as they walked into the living room.
“What’s going on?” Leo asked.
Jake sighed. “Zoey left. She said something about needing to clear her head so she went home.”
“Home? Like Arteias?” Paige said.
“Maybe she needed to talk to her mother,” Jason suggested.
Chris laughed. “That’s a good one. She hates her mother.”
Phoebe placed a hand to her forehead. “Then we orb her as$back here.”
“We can’t though,” Leo explained. “No one’s allowed in Arteias; it’s shielded by a powerful force of Ancient magic that makes it impenetrable. They had to do that ever since Tilo.”
“Well how do we get to her then?” Piper asked impatiently.
“Well, only very powerful creatures- more powerful than elders- might be able to penetrate the shield,” Leo said.
*****
Cole stopped typing on his computer and pressed the green button on his phone. “Janine, I thought I told you to hold all my calls.”
“Yes but Mr. Turner, there’s a Mr. Perry and he claims that it’s an emergency.”
Cole sighed. “Send him in.”
Chris entered the large office with a reluctant expression on his face.
“Ah, if it isn’t the half wit from the future.”
“Look, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have to be,” Chris stated coldly.
“Enlighten me then.”
“Zoey ran off to Arteias and we need her back here in order to vanquish the warlock. Unfortunately, you’re the only one who can reach her in Arteias.”
“Why is that?”
Chris rolled his eyes. “Because you’re the only one powerful enough to try to pass through the shield.”
Cole smiled smugly. “It’s a gift.” He laughed and leaned back in his chair. “Good for Zoey. It’s about time she did something for herself. I mean, when she was Queen, she didn’t put up with crap. She was a feisty one if you know what I mean.”
Chris glared at him. “Screw you,” he said angrily.
Cole smiled, “Imagine what you could do with all that energy you use just by being angry. I’ll go get her. She’s a valuable employee.”
***
“Alright, I’ve got the list of those who died in the same manner that this warlock kills in,” Phoebe said as she entered the living room where her sister was seated with a scrying crystal and a map of San Francisco.
“Well let’s hope that it will help us because the crystal isn’t picking up on him,” Piper said.
“Should we call Paige? You know, in case we need her help.”
“No, she’s swamped at work,” Piper replied while putting her jacket one. She turned to Chris who was holding Wyatt in his arms. “Did you talk to Cole?”
“Yeah this morning. He said he’ll work on it.”
Piper nodded, “If she shows, call me on my cell ok?”
“Yeah. You two be careful. If you see him run.”
The sisters nodded in agreement then left the manor in a hurry.
Piper glanced at Phoebe before knocking on the green door to the apartment. A young woman with curly red hair and brown eyes opened the door. “Can I help you?” she asked the two sisters.
“Uh yeah, actually you can. I’m Piper and this is my sister Phoebe. We were wondering if you’d be willing to talk about Jasmine’s death.”
The young girl shook her head. “I already told the police all I know.”
“We’re not with the police,” Phoebe said quickly. “We’re witches too. The charmed ones.”
The young lady’s eyes widened, “OH my goodness, come in. I’m Bethany, Jasmine’s room mate.”
“Are you a witch too?” Piper asked.
Bethany shook her head, “No, no I’m not. I’ve been Jasmine’s friend since the eighth grade and I fully respect that she was a witch.”
“We were wondering if we could ask you a few things about her; personal things,” Phoebe said. Bethany nodded. “Ok, did you know if she belonged to a coven at all?”
Bethany thought for a moment. “I think she mentioned something about that.” She crossed the room to a small wood desk and opened the drawer and pulled out a small black book. “The Atari Clan,” she said after a while. “It’s not a coven but a clan her parents were both from.”
Phoebe nodded and jotted down all the new information.
*****
“Hello?” Phoebe said as she and Piper entered a small magic shop. It was dimly lit and smelled of spiced incents. The walls were lined in giant shelves filled with books and various crystals, rocks, bones and other objects. There were cabinets full of different glass jars that contained frog legs, wormwood oil, purple and blue powders, bat wings, black poppies and much more including bigger animal body parts.
“Ok, this place is giving me the creeps,” Phoebe said. “Maybe he isn’t here.”
“Who are you?” a man said from behind them. Phoebe jumped at the sound of his voice.
“We’re Charmed Ones,” Piper replied watching him carefully. “Are you Kyle Wellington?”
The tall man nodded as he stepped closer to the sisters. His pale blue eyes studied them. “I suspect you’re here because of the witch killer?”
Piper nodded, “That would be correct. What do you know about him?”
“What do I know about him?” Kyle repeated. “He killed my brother that’s what I know.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Piper said. “Do you have any idea why he did though?”
“His powers would be my guess. Robert was hydrokinetic, he could create water with his mind along with manipulate it.”
Phoebe wrote this down quickly. “What’s your family background? Where does your blood trace back to?”
“The Atari Clan, why?”
Piper glanced at Phoebe, “Third one to say that.”
Paige sat stiff at her desk in the must old, book filled room. She couldn’t help but think that Bryan’s death was all her fault. After all, she had been the one who had asked Zoey to translate the book. But weren’t her temp jobs supposed to help people, not create problems? She was still pondering over this when the door burst open.
“Paige Matthews?” the man with dirty blonde hair and dark brown eyes demanded upon entering the room.
“Who the hell are you?” Paige asked getting up out of her desk to prepare for the unthinkable.
“Have you any idea what you have done?” the young man said as he stepped closer to the desk. “You have released a most powerful and dangerous warlock back into the world.”
“Joseph.”
“Yes and now because of you, he’s free.”
“Who are you and how do I know you’re not in league with him?”
“In league with a warlock?” he scoffed. “My family spent years trying to vanquish him but found that binding his soul to a book was more effective at the time. He’s killed almost a hundred witches looking for his perfect match. Some of the witches he’s killed have been powerful enough to last him days even months but some only a few hours, but that was in my time alone.”
“The book said it would only guarantee him youth for twelve hours.”
“Youth yes, but powers last longer. Joseph just takes the youth to keep his body from aging. It helps him to maintain the new powers he receives.”
“Ok but what do you mean his perfect match? My book of shadows said a powerful witch and the book he was bound to said three powerful witches.”
“Well your book of shadows was wrong,” the man replied coldly. “The book he was bound to does speak the truth however there is a perfect match that will keep him from having to take the lives of three witches at three different times. Joseph needs the right match in order to gain all the power necessary for him to be unstoppable.”
“How? He isn’t that powerful to begin with and what if his powerful witches have limited powers.”
“Foolish witch, has your book told thee nothing? Joseph’s powers were stripped by a gypsy clan known as the Atari Clan. Before then he was a most feared warlock. After he was stripped, he soon found a way around that when a seer told him that getting his powers back was indeed possible. He then sought out help from the Council and they gave him the ability to drain the lives of witches until he found the one that would give him something that he wanted. The only condition is he is bound to the Council forever even when he gets his powers back.”
“That’s not possible. The Ancient wiped out the council. They’re gone.”
“They’re not gone. They’re very much alive and more powerful than you know. Now thanks to you they’re one step closer to achieving their goals.”
Paige sighed then realized something. “What would be his perfect match?”
End of chapter six wiccangirl311 Charmed Cafe Member Posts: 1138 (11/7/04 3:45 pm) Reply Re: Cold -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter seven
The sun beat down warmly on her skin and a cool breeze rustled the loose plum colored clothing that Zoey wore. She could feel every ripple in the pond that was in front of her and the movement in the air. She sighed and wiped away the tears that had escaped their prisons. She glanced down at the small dark green gift bag and reached for it tentatively. It was the gift that Bryan’s parents had given to her two days ago at his funeral. She had waited until now- her birthday- to open it. She reached in between the maroon colored tissue paper and pulled out a small card with the words Happy Birthday printed in simple black letters on the front. Beneath the letters was a picture of Zoey’s old cat Bonkers that Bryan had drawn. She smiled and opened the card:
To an Amazing, Lovely, Graceful yet Klutzy woman. May your birthday bring you great joy. You deserve it ZoZo after all you have been through you are truly a strong woman. We’ve been through things thick and thin and we’ll be through more until the end. Party hard, laugh, shout, scream, dance in your underwear… (Didn’t think Tina told me that huh? Get down with the Risky Business! Lol!)…sing, be sexy, be you. Happy Birthday and many more. -Bryan P.S. Batman is a superhero no matter what you say!
Zoey laughed through her tears. She then reached into the bag again and pulled out a small hand carved jewelry box. She opened it up and the Waltz of the Flowers played. She smiled at it and noticed a small silver charm bracelet that lay on top of the burgundy material that lined that box. She picked it up and several charms dangled from the bracelet. There was a silver Z, a guitar, a roll of film and a basket ball. She put the bracelet on her wrist then closed the box.
“What are you doing here?” she asked as she put her present back into the bag. She turned and faced Cole.
“Clearly I’ve been living in the wrong place. Were you expecting me?” He said glancing at her clothing which was a maroon colored bikini top that accented her chest’s curves; his gaze then fell down to her nicely tanned stomach then her hips where a flowy maroon colored skirt with jagged ends that began at her knees. She also wore a silver arm bracelet that spiraled, and she also wore an anklet. “You know, if you keep teasing me like this…”
Zoey laughed.
Cole smiled, “So, you want to tell me why the little twit sent me here?”
Zoey smiled. “Chris is not a twit.”
“Funny how you knew I was referring to him. What’s going on Zoey?” He asked stepping closer to her.
Zoey looked down then at Cole. “It’s all my fault.”
“How? How is your friend’s death your fault?”
“Because I read this book and bam! He’s here.”
“You read a book?”
“It was in Romanian and Paige asked me to.”
“You can read Romanian?”
“Yeah and now Bryan is dead because of it.”
Cole sighed. “Look, I’m not good at these sorts of things but the twit and the sisters are worried about you. Zoey, you’re an amazing woman- stubborn yeah- but you could never be responsible for something like this. You have to know that.”
“But I-”
“No,” Cole said firmly taking hold of her arms. “No, don’t think that. You had no idea that this would happen. All you need to think about now is vanquishing this warlock’s sorry ass. He’s going to wish he had though twice before messing with you. I mean, I have seen what you’ve done to demons when you were Queen; you make werewolves look like puppies next to what you can do.”
Zoey smiled faintly. “That’s so sweet.” She hugged Cole, “Thank you.”
“You welcome,” he said still holding her in his arms. “Now I think proper payment would be you wearing this and similar items like it to work.”
Zoey laughed, “I’m sorry but I already have a boyfriend.”
“So that’s what you call that thing.”
*****

“Chris!” Pi per said as she rushed into the manor.
“What’s wrong?” he asked growing immediately concerned by the look on her face.
“Have you heard from Zoey?” she asked as she looked around the conservatory.
Chris shook his head. “What’s going on?”
“We found Joseph’s next target,” Phoebe answered. Just then Paige orbed in with the young man.
“Where’s Zoey?”
“Don’t know,” Piper said. “Who’s this?”
“This is Rein,” Paige said. “Anyways, he’s the one who trapped Joseph in the book. Also all of his targets have one thing in common:”
“They’re all descendents of the Atari Clan,” Phoebe finished.
“Yes and as for Bryan’s death, he was desperate,” Paige said.
“Wait, but how do you know that Zoey’s the witch he’s after?” Chris asked.
“She can govern the four elements which makes her the most powerful Atari witch plus she’s part Amazon meaning a lot more strength and a lot more power,” Paige explained.
Just then a green portal opened and Zoey and Cole stepped out of it hand in hand.
“Hey guys,” she said letting go of Cole’s hand.
“Your highness,” Rein said dropping down on one knee and lowering his gaze. “Will your royal highness and her king allow my services in protecting her from the warlock?”
Phoebe struggled to hold in her laugh.
Cole smiled, “I’ve been the Source but never King. I could get used to this.”
Zoey laughed. “At ease.”
Rein got back up to his feet.
“He’s not my king,” she clarified.
“I meant no disrespect my lady.”
“No disrespect was taken,” she said with a smile. “What’s your name?”
“Rein.”
“Well thank you for your offer Rein but I will be in no need of your protection.”
“But my lady, Joseph will be coming for you. He will surely kill you if you do not let me help you.”
“He’s right,” Chris said.
“I know but I will not be having anyone dying for me.”
“What about our plan?” Cole asked.
“It will go down,” Zoey confirmed.
“What plan?” Phoebe demanded.

Joseph blinked into the dimly lit basement. A vicious smile spread across his face. Zoey kept singing and dancing as she folded her laundry. She had her headphones on and didn’t hear him as he advanced from behind. She placed her pink socks in the dresser drawer and glanced up. She gasped at the sight of Joseph’s reflection in the mirror. She turned around quickly removing the headphones.
“You, you…”
“Surprised to see me?” Joseph asked with a wicked smile.
Zoey tried to run but Joseph blocked her way and pinned her against the dresser. “This won’t hurt a bit,” he assured seizing hold of her chin and pulling her face closer to his.
“This might,” Zoey said and kneed him in the crotch. Joseph cried out in pain and fell to his knees. Zoey quickly ran from him and up the basement stairs. She ran out into the dining room and Joseph blinked in behind her. He picked her up and threw her out of the dining room and she landed hard on the table with flowers on it right before the stairs.
“Foolish witch! Dost thou think thou can get away from me that easily?” He laughed as her watched her struggle to get up. He marched over to her and yanked her up by the hair. “You’ve got something that I need. Your family took something very precious away from me and I want it back.”
Zoey bit down on his hand. “Stupid wh0re!” he punched her square in the jaw and then threw her into the railing of the stair case. Joseph laughed. “That’s the problem with you Ataris: you bleed too easily,” he said of the cut on Zoey’s forehead. “Your kin is always fun to play with though.” He kicked her in the stomach and kneeled down beside her and forced her to look at him. He touched her lips with the tips of his fingers. “It’s a shame you have to die, you’re so cute.” He pressed his lips to hers.
She suddenly grabbed his head and began kissing him fiercely. Joseph struggled to get away but she kept her lips pressed to his. She pushed him away from her, her eyes violet with the intent to kill. When she exhaled a cloud of icy cool air came out of her mouth. “OH what’s wrong? I didn’t’ bite did I?”
Joseph stared at her with wide eyes. He couldn’t believe what was happening to him. His lips were turning a bluish purple. Zoey got up and picked him up with one hand by the throat and lifted him up off of the ground.
“You took someone away from me, someone I loved dearly.”
She threw him across the room and into the second living room. “He wasn’t what you were looking for, but I am, aren’t I?” she lifted him up and pinned him against the wall. “Feel that?” she asked placing her hand on his chest. “That’s your insides slowing turning to ice. Blood will cease to flow then your heart will beat slower.” She began to tap his chest. “Ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom; ba…boom…ba…boom.” She smiled viciously. “You know, I don’t think your dying painfully enough. Here, let me help.” She took his hand in her and caused it to turn to ice. He screamed out in pain. “I have control over the elements, remember?” Without applying much force she broke off his hand and dropped it to the floor where it shattered into tiny little pieces. “Oh dear, you’re just breaking apart.”
Joseph was now screaming in immense pain. His face turning bluer by the moment and his tears turned into tiny icicles as they made their way down his cold cheeks. She froze his other hand and broke it off as well. Zoey smiled genuinely showing the pure pleasure she was getting out of torturing him. She froze his other arm and lit a bright green fire ball. She smiled and slowly began to melt away his lower arm. Joseph was shrieking horribly. “Oh, what’s the matter? Not having any fun?”
“Just kill me!” he screamed.
“Why? That would just be helping you.” She burned his non-frozen skin and again he screamed louder and more horribly than before.
“Ok Zoey, that’s enough,” Cole said standing behind her with his hands on her shoulders. He smiled as he watched her in amazement. Zoey continued to burn Joseph. “Honey,” Cole said.
Zoey extinguished the fire ball and stepped aside.
“Take what was stolen,” Phoebe said entering the room.
“Take away that which was hunted n vain,” Paige added.
“Let him feel all the pain,” Piper chimed in.
“The icy kiss of death I give to thee, be gone but not with out suffering,” Zoey concluded. She kissed her palm and blew the kiss towards him. Joseph screamed as his body jerked about violently. His flesh slowly began to melt off of his bones and his eyes burst and suddenly he combusted into flames and melted into a green liquid which sank through the floor.
“Wow Zoey, that kiss was something,” Paige said.
Zoey smiled, “I know.”
“Your majesty, my work here is done,” Rein said and materialized out.
“Well,” Cole said. “Didn’t I tell you he’d beg?”
Zoey smiled viciously. “He was begging me mercifully to take his life.”
Cole laughed. “Like the others did as well. This was nice but I’ve got to be going.”
Phoebe sighed. “Thank you.”
Cole nodded and was about to leave. “Remember what we talked about,” he said to Zoey. She smiled faintly and he shimmered out.
“What did you two talk about?” Chris asked curiously.
“Nothing, he just helped me realize some things, that’s all.”
“I know you’re probably wondering what I’m doing here,” Zoey said as she glanced around and shivered from the cold. “I had some free time and decided to stop by.”
She smiled and played with the charm bracelet. “I got you something,” she said as she pulled out a brown paper bag from her back pack. She opened it and pulled out a glossy comic book. “Batman, it looked interesting and I know that you would probably call me a hypocrite because I bought it but whatever.” She sighed and touched the tombstone with the tips of her fingers gliding over the engravings. Tears streamed down her cheeks. “I love you Bryan and someday I hope we meet up again. Then you know, we can argue that Batman is just a rich man with fancy gadgets and so not a super hero.” She laughed to herself. “Also how I’m talking to your grave. Anyways, I’ll stop talking now and just read. “All was quiet in the city of Gotham….”
The End

Re: Cold -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wow. Not sure how I feel about Cole’s influence on Zoey. That was some major anger she was channeling there, and the pleasure she took in torturing Joseph was along the lines of punishing the guilty, something good witches aren’t supposed to do. Not saying he didn’t deserve it, but I like the worry about Zoey’s morality that you’ve planted. She’s getting more and more complex by the story: bravo!
