Breakaway
(C) Amy
Grew up in a small town
And when the rain would fall down
I just stared out my window
Dreaming of a could-be
And if I'd end up happy
I would pray (I would pray)
“Hey! Watch where you’re going!” A jock shoved her, knocking her books to the floor.
“Sorry.” She replied timidly, bending down the reach for her books. “God, I can’t wait to get out of here.”
Trying not to reach out
But when I'd try to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I pray (I would pray)
I could breakaway
“Hey Four-Eyes!” A popular girl taunted.
“Metal Mouth!”
She ignored them as she took her seat in the back of the classroom. “Why can’t they just accept me? I just want to fit in for once!”
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I loved
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
“I’ll show them. One of these days, I’ll show them. I’ll be famous and then, everyone will know my name. Everyone will be nice to me, no more ‘Four-Eyes’ or ‘Metal Mouth’. I can’t wait.” She thought to herself as she left the building for lunch.
Wanna feel the warm breeze
Sleep under a palm tree
Feel the rush of the ocean
Get onboard a fast train
Travel on a jet plane, far away (I will)
And breakaway
Dozing off during her free period, she dreamt of places far from here, far away from this little town. She dreamt off cities, with skyscrapers, bustling with people. People who were always there, always cheerful, and always nice.
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes til' I touch the sky
I'll make a wish
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I loved
I'll take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
“My time has come. I know it’s time. Time to leave this town behind.” She said as she packed her bags. “No one will miss me. Not my grandmother, not my sisters, maybe the cat…no, not even the cat. No one.”
Buildings with a hundred floors
Swinging around wild indoors
Maybe I don't know where they'll take me but
Gotta keep moving on, moving on
Fly away, breakaway
“Where did she goes, Grams?” A younger sister asked, confused. “How come she didn’t want to stay and play with me? Does she hate me? I wasn’t mean, I shared all my toys with her.”
“I don’t know, honey, I don’t know.” A sad grandmother replied.
“I do.” Another sister, this one older, said. “Everyone teased her, she thought no one liked her. Not even her family. I tried to talk her out of it, I really did. I thought I had her convinced that we needed her here, but it didn’t work. I’m really sorry. I hope she’s safe. Where ever she is.”
I'll spread my wings
And I'll learn how to fly
Though it's not easy to tell you goodbye
I gotta take a risk
Take chance
Make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget the place I come from
I gotta take a risk
Take a chance
Make a change
And breakaway
“This is more like it. This is where I belong.” She said to herself, standing outside a broken and abandoned nightclub in San Francisco. “This is my life now.”
Breakaway, breakaway…
