Accidentally in Love?

Phoebe smiled over at her new husband, Coop, feeling a smile rise up on her face. For the first time, her wedding had gone off without a hitch, and she had finally gotten married to the man of her dreams. It might seem like it was a fairytale coming true, and Phoebe wasn’t going to deny she felt like a princess. However, she knew that it wasn’t always going to be this perfect, and she was going to be ready when things started turning for the worse.
That’s okay, Phoebe thought, looping her arm under Coop’s. Her golden wedding band—just placed on her finger a few hours ago—caught the light and Phoebe felt her smile broaden. As long as this happy period lasts as long as possible, then I’m happy with that.
“Are you ready to sing? Sure you haven’t gotten rusty over the past few months?” Phoebe said teasingly. Coop had been granted a short sabbatical on his Cupid duties for them to have as much time as possible to, at first, get used to their newfound relationship and, later, planning their wedding. “What happens if you mess up?”
Coop smiled. “I won’t mess up. However, you . . . ” Phoebe sighed dramatically at his cockiness.
“You’re a cocky, egotistical bastard, you know that?” Phoebe said with a straight face. “I don’t know why I ever fell in love with you in the first place.” Other than the fact that you are always there for me. You’re cocky, but hey. What good is a man who doesn’t have any faults? Besides, I like cocky men.
“Oh, you know you love me,” Coop said, twisting her around. He placed a chaste kiss on her lips, then broke away an instant later. His eyes glimmered happily. Phoebe couldn’t remember a moment where she had seen him so happy. “If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be here right now, after all.”
“That’s too true,” Phoebe said softly. She looked down swiftly, just to make sure she wasn’t hovering over the ground. She had just gotten her levitating power back, now that she’s understood things might not always be cured by magic, and she was still getting used to it again. Her eyes went up to Coop’s once more, and she began walking again, Coop slipping a hand around her white-clothed waist. “I can’t believe this is actually happening. I’m married. Married.”
“I can’t believe it either,” Coop said in return. “After everything, I’m surprised we’ve gotten this far.”
I can’t believe it, either.
“Are you ready now?” Coop said, as they reached the door that separated magic school to the real world. They had rented a small building to perform their wedding reception at, so that nobody would distract them.
Phoebe nodded and together they walked through the door to the real world.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everybody shuffled around the large, ballroom-sized room, exchanged words and taking hors douvres from platters on the tables lining three walls. Nobody really noticed that three people who were supposed to be dead—Patty, Grams, and Prue—were standing in the corner. Instead, everybody was talking in hushed voices about Phoebe’s wedding gown, which was made without a train and tiny blue beads stitched into the fabric or speculating what their opening song could be.
Nobody will guess, Coop thought with a smile. Of course, when they start singing it, they’ll recognize it. Especially when I start singing it.
Phoebe’s greatest urge was to make their wedding reception the best it could be, and the dance to be as meaningful as possible. Choosing their song and, most importantly, choosing who was going to sing it had been thought about for ages, until Phoebe had had the bright idea to have him sing it.
“Come on, Coop,” Phoebe said, nudging him. Coop looked down at her, feeling a smile rise up on his face. He had never seen Phoebe so happy, nor felt her heart so full to the brim before. She was positively glowing and the wedding dress only amplified that glow a hundred times. “You won’t mess up, I promise.”
“I know,” Coop said. “I’m more worried about messing up the dance steps. Dancing is not one of the things the Elders taught me to do.”
“Oh, you’ll do fine,” Phoebe said, smiling.
At that moment, Piper and Paige walked over to the newlyweds. “Are you ready?” Piper asked. “If you wait much longer, all the food will be gone, and I’ll have to go to the Manor and get the rest of it!”
“Piper, don’t worry,” Paige said soothingly. “You cooked enough food to feed a—an elephant!”
“An elephant?” Coop asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
“Hey!” Paige protested. “It was the best thing I could think of, all right?”
Well, I guess that makes sense, but—an elephant?
“Yeah, we’re ready,” Phoebe said, changing the subject. “Just clear out the people in the middle of the floor, and we’ll get going.” Phoebe let out a squeal. “I just can’t believe this. Let me tell you, this dance is going to be remembered for centuries.”
“Millenniums,” Piper corrected. “Even when we’re gone, we’ll have pictures, and the Book of Shadows.” Piper, Paige and Phoebe had each gotten pages off the book to fill with their stories of their journeys as witches, to carry on to other generations of the Halliwell lines. Everything about their lives, from the very first moment Phoebe had read the first spell out of the Book to the moment they defeated the Ultimate Battle, was recorded in the thick parchment pages of the book.
“That’s definitely right,” Phoebe said, smiling.
“I’ll go clear them away,” Paige said, pushing her way through her crowd to the microphone on the podium pushed against the fourth wall. She reached it finally. Her voice resonated through the room suddenly and Coop took in a deep breath. This was it. “Would everybody in the center of the floor please move against the walls for the new couple, Phoebe and Coop Halliwell, to dance their very first dance?”
The people already in the edges of the floor applauded, as the people in the center hurried to the edges, pushing their way through the crowd. Looking over at Phoebe, he smiled himself when he saw a large smile on her face. Taking her hand in his, he headed to the center of the floor, getting into their positions.
“Thank you,” Paige said from the podium. As she stepped around it and over to Piper again, she pressed down the “Play” button on the CD player. As the music began to play—all of the guitars, drums and pianos blending together evenly—people began to laugh as they recognized the song.
Accidentally in Love, by the Counting Crows.
Nothing more appropriate.
Phoebe placed her hands on his waist, Coop doing the same to her. The music began and Coop took a deep breath. He began to sing, his voice a low bass. People seemed surprised that the groom was singing the song.
So she said what’s the problem baby
What’s the problem I don’t know
Well, maybe I’m in love
Phoebe and Coop moved as one, their feet moving in complicated patterns Coop had been afraid he wouldn’t be able to achieve. Even as he sang, he still danced as fast and accurately as he could, never missing a step. The blue beads in Phoebe’s gown shimmered as the lights suddenly turned off, gathering everybody in a dim light.
Love . . .
His feet moved almost out of their own, like somebody else—a professional dancer—was temporarily taking them over. His singing was something he always prided, but it wasn’t something he thought would go this far.
Think about it every time
I think about it
Can’t stop thinking ‘bout it.
They moved in sync, whirling away from each other. Dancing alone now, the people could really see how the light caught the beads on her dress, illuminating her an unearthly blue light. Coop, meanwhile, concentrated on his own moves, feeling his feet carry him around and around.
They suddenly twirled toward each other, Phoebe and Coop connecting once more.
How much longer will it take to cure this
Just to cure it cause I can’t ignore it if it’s love
Their eyes met and they backed away in three smooth, perfectly executed moves. Phoebe’s face lit up with a beautiful smile, as did Coop’s own. People were gasping and laughing in awe and amusement, but the only thing Coop could see was Phoebe.
Love . . .
Phoebe shot him a look and Coop put extra meaning in the few words, slowing down slightly to give more meaning.
Makes me wanna turn around and face me but I don’t know nothing ‘bout love, uh-huh
Phoebe whirled toward him, and Coop shot a look at Victor, who had been right, that day he said that he never really knew anything about love until he had gotten his heart broken.
Come on, come on
Turn a little faster
They spun around toward each other. Phoebe’s dress flared behind her, catching the dim light.
Come on, come on
The world will follow after
Coop crooned the next words, making Phoebe smile at the slight cheesiness of the words.
Come on, come on
Cause everybody’s after love . . .
The last word was long, but Coop felt his voice carry it through. The cymbals blared through the CD player.
So I said I’m a snowball running
Running down into the spring that’s coming all this love
As soon as Phoebe’s hands touched his own, he spun her out, spinning himself. He turned around just in time to catch her.
Melting under blue skies
Belting out
Coop looked directly in her eyes as he sang the next few words.
Sunlight shimmering love
They spun together now, moving together effortlessly. For the first time, he felt like they were one.
Well baby I surrender
To the strawberry ice cream
Phoebe laughed at this and moved away, to be pulled back by Coop.
Never ever end all of this love
Coop shook his head at Phoebe, almost as though saying what the song meant.
Well I didn’t mean to do it
But there’s no escaping your love, uh-huh
Harmless-looking white balls, made by Paige, suddenly whirled above them. Coop’s ring reacted, throwing out pink lines of light. He clasped hands with Phoebe, singing out the words loudly.
These lines of lightning
Mean we’re never alone,
Never alone, no, no
Coop’s voice entered the second chorus. His voice grew louder, something he thought wasn’t possible.
Come on, come on
Move a little closer
Phoebe and Coop moved so close you couldn’t fit a piece of paper between them.
Come on, come on,
I want to hear you whisper
They swirled together, still keeping their bodies close.
Come on, come on
Settle down inside my love, uh-huh
With one smooth move, he dipped Phoebe down at the “uh-huh,” then brought her up once more.
Come on, come on
Jump a little higher
Coop lifted her up into the air as thought she weighed as much as a feather.
Come on, come on
If you feel a little lighter
Phoebe swirled out of Coop’s embrace, around the large empty space.
Come on, come on
We were once
Upon a time in love
Phoebe reached him once more, just as the music paused on a drumbeat. Coop took a deep breath, then sang into the silence.
We’re accidentally in love
They seemed to stop, but then Coop moved—now they were revolving slowly on the spot.
Accidentally in love
Accidentally in love
Coop shot Phoebe a look, who smiled. The lines of pink light from his ring pulsed around them like they had a mind of their own.
Accidentally in love
Coop’s voice rose in volume as the CD began playing a bit louder once more.
Accidentally in love
He whispered something to Phoebe between the words.
Accidentally in love
“I love you,” he had said.
Accidentally in love
Phoebe smiled in return, still revolving slowly on the spot, though they had gone a bit faster now.
Accidentally in love
Coop locked hands.
Accidentally
Coop felt the urge to kiss her, but he resisted. Instead they broke apart, only their left hands staying in contact.
I’m in love, I’m in love
I’m in love, I’m in love
I’m in love, I’m in love,
Accidentally[/i
Coop smiled—everything was true. As his ring—on his right hand—pulled the pink lines back, they intertwined with their wedding bands.
I’m in love, I’m in love
I’m in love, I’m in love
I’m in love, I’m in love
Accidentally
Their feet carried them closer together, but they didn’t make any effort to move any more contact than their joined hands—they were both mesmerized by the pink lines surrounding their bands.
Coop felt the ending of the song coming—only one chorus left.
Come on, come on
Spin a little tighter
Phoebe swung into Coop’s arms, melting against him.
Come on, come on
And the world’s a little brighter
More of the light balls erupted from Paige’s hands and the pink lines of light surrounding them so thickly that the only thing they could see was each other.
Come on, come on
Just get yourself inside her
Coop looked deep into Phoebe’s eyes as he sang the word.
Love . . .
He pulled Phoebe closer, his warm voice filling with meaning.
I’m in love.
With one smooth move, he dipped down and kissed Phoebe. The wedding guests cheered, the most prominent of them being Paige and the temporarily corporeal Prue. She was happy, clearly, that Phoebe had found she had wanted to spend the rest of her life with. When their kiss only deepened, and Phoebe ran her hands through his hair, the cheers turned to hoots.
Finally, they broke apart, staring out at the crowd.
“To all you people,” Paige yelled into the microphone on the podium, her voice getting magnified ten times more. “I present to you the newly married couple, Coop and Phoebe Halliwell!”
The cheers grew louder and people applauded. Some people were yelling for an encore. Looking at Phoebe’s mom, Patty, he saw happy tears glistening at the corner of her eyes. Phoebe smiled broadly, and took Coop’s hand, dragging him over to her mother, grandmother and her sisters.
The three generations of Halliwell women engulfed them in a hug.
This wedding is going to be remembered for a very, very long time.
