ICE
Chapter One
The deathly cold air stung her lungs as she tried to keep herself from breathing hard. Her chest, the milk white flesh of the body covered in dirt and mud, was rising and falling quickly. Her heart seemed to be pounding in her ears, only making her tremble out of fear even more.
The crack of a whip sounded in the distance. They were close.
The woman looked around. Tree after tree after tall, dark tree surrounded her and seemed to create a barrier between her and the free lands. She knew the village was just a short distance away but however, she could not remember in which direction it lay. She turned to the left and then to the right. She stepped behind where she was currently standing. Which way was it? The twilight of the day transitioning into night cast a ghastly blue and gray glow about the forest. Her eyes were foggy.
The sounds of horse hooves became clearer and louder. They were going to find her and that would be the end.
The woman breathed in deep, a combination of fear and determination swept over her body in cold waves tingling down from the roots of her hair, down her gentle spine and to the tips of her bare toes. She proceeded to run northbound from where she was. As she was running, the voices grew louder. How foolish! She was running not away from them but towards them. How could this be? Her eyes widened.
Her shoulder nearly popped out of its socket as she was pulled to the side. Her vision went black for a second as she felt a deep cold and hard stone beneath her body as she fell. The woman blinked and looked up. There was another woman looking down at her.
“Hurry!” she whispered so gently that it was barely audible. The young woman reached down to pick the fallen up and dragged her into the shadows of a deep cave.
As the last shreds of daylight disappeared, the fallen had a chance to glance over at the stranger and saw her eyes flash a shade of violet.
“Paige!” Piper yelled as she entered her sister’s room. It had been like this for the past week.
Paige woke up with a start, her sheets and hair soaked in a cold sweat.
“Are you alright?” Piper asked maternally as she tossed the younger a fresh pair of pajamas.
Paige shook her head as she sat up. “It was the same dream,” she replied, her voice shaky as if she had been running a mile. “Only this time I saw her.”
Piper raised a curious eyebrow. “The woman who rescues you?”
Paige nodded and blinked hard, trying to push the vivid images out of her mind. “What do you think this means?”
Piper shrugged. “Who knows; it can be a bad dream. Maybe a past life.”
Paige rolled her eyes. “I hope it’s only a dream. I’m tired of all of this,” Paige grumbled.
