Today is July 17th and I always feel a bit melancholy on this date.
You see, had things gone differently, today would've been my 32nd wedding anniversary, had Dan (yeah, his name was Dan, but all similarities end after that...) not fallen for someone else.
We weren't actually engaged, but we were "engaged to be engaged," the closest I've ever come to being married. He was still in college and didn't want to be engaged until after he graduated, the following year. But we had it all planned out.
We would've become officially engaged on February 14, 1976. Yeah, the bicentennial year.... And because my birthday is in July, so my birthstone is a ruby and his is in September, so his birthstone is a sapphire, my engagement ring would've had a small ruby (for me), a small diamond (for love) and a small sapphire (for him)...red, white and blue.
Our wedding day would've been July 17th because his parents' anniversary was on July 15th and my parents' was on July 19th.
We knew where we would live, what jobs we had, even what we would name our children.
Who knows, in some alternate world, maybe those kids exist....
Knowing some of the things I know now, I know I wouldn't have been happy married to him; his world and mine don't click. And he did marry the other gal and they are very happy, and I'm still friends with them...one of their kids is my only godchild. And I know that I'm very, very happy being single.
I don't think about what could've been very often. But on July 17th each year, I do.
