I someday dream of becoming a television writer... it's a pretty cool job. After all, they're the ones who give characters dialogue and actio and they're the ones who deliver all the constant drama. And I hate to say it... they get the short end of the stick. Here at the Charmed Cafe... we talk about our favourite sisters and our favourite episodes... but shouldn't we have favourite writers?
I was looking through Wikipedia to see who wrote what episodes of Charmed... in the name of research (to see what episodes Brad Kern typically wrote because if I were to become an executive producer of a show I want to know what kind of episodes I'd be writing... i.e. fillers or major plot developpers)... and found myself with two favourite writers.
Chris Levinson wrote a slew of AWESOME episodes within the first three seasons of Charmed. He seems to be the one who wrote most of the episodes that develops Prue's character and he was the one who wrote Morality Bites (I believe...). However, it appears that he left the show at the start of the fourth season... I'm wondering if a bunch of writers left because of Prue/Shannen's exit...
For the rest of the series, Krista Vernoff takes my award for best writer. Some of her credits include "Siren Song" and she was one of the many writers who wrote "Sense and Sense Ability".
And as much as Brad Kern gets a bad rep around here... he's written some amazing episodes. Sure he's made some bad decisions but he's a pretty good writer.
Anyone have any favourites?

Foxfire, do you want to write for Canadian television or American television?

I'll have to look more into it see who my fav writers are. But on this note with Brad Kern, I have never at all disputed that he is a good writer. He definitely is. He wrote quite a lot of amazing episodes. However, it's his incompetence as a show runner that usually gets ragged on. He ran the show into the ground..yet interestingly enough still had a creative eye to write some very memorable eps.

I would rather write for American television... I know how basically impossible it is but hey... might as well dream big, right? Canadian television doesn't offer the kind of outlet I want. Mind you, I'm going to have to drop all my Canadian habits (i.e. writing things with the "extra Us" like colour and favourite).
I think a lot of people say that Joss Whedon is a genius and I think they're all wrong. He may have created Buffy and was an executive producer on Angel but he was the one who chose to do all the dumb things. Where Kern wrote excellent stories but ran his show into the ground, Joss did the opposite. Yes, he was a good writer but for God's sake DAWN?!?!?! CORDELIA AND CONNOR?!?! Jesus.
Haha... momentary rantiness.

Foxfire, what you need to do is learn how to write at least two fantastic spec scripts (which is what I'm currently trying to do), then do some research on agents; send out query letters, trying to get them to take you on as a client. And move to L.A., of course. Also, within the context of this discussion on episode writers, everyone should keep in mind that Kern most likely rewrote most of the episode scripts.
