I agree with you totally on that one - the way Phoebs would win over both of them if you could just get rid of Cole!

Paige was rather stubborn about being sure on Cole. I was proud of her for that. Even Leo was mean to her about that. Or was that Cole glamouring into Leo? Can't remember exactly but Paige talked to Leo on her concerns about Cole and he told her she was jealous and the fifth wheel. Not very whitelighter-ish of him - he's supposed to be their guide.

Prue. I liked her integrity and how she always looked out for her sisters, and I always wanted a sibling like that. I did like Paige in the fourth season, though, and she remained my favorite character throughout season four and onward. Ultimately, I'd choose Prue over Paige even disregarding the writing post-S3, but I can see why Paige's personality appeals to some fans more than Prue's.

I think younger fans might end up resenting Prue while liking Paige's ditzy nature.

When I was watching the show as a kid, Prue was ALWAYS my favourite. I remember never getting over her death. But recently, whenever I rewatch the series, she seems to be getting on my nerves a little bit. I was getting a bit tired of every episode being about her. I still like her though nevertheless, but now my favourite sister in seasons 1-3 is Phoebe. This seems to be a weird twist for me, because I used to like Prue for her matureness, that while being an immature kid myself. Now, when I'm grown and more mature, I seem to be drawn to the "young and rebellious" characters, lol.
So naturally in season 4, Paige quickly became my favourite. I actually loved the way the writers introduced her. She was a glimpse of fresh air for the show - very fun and likeable. Her rebellious teenage years were very relatable. I also liked her introduction as a social worker and I never understood why she completely threw her career out the window.
Prue was definitely a more complete and developed character, maybe partly because she was basically the focus of the first two seasons, while the writers never really did much for Paige, despite her being on the show longer. I felt like they kept changing her all the time to fit in some stereotype and never really explored her personality in depth. I wanted to know more about her past experiences, her drinking problems, etc.

That has a lot to do with Shannen's contract - she was supposed to always be the star - while in the second set it was supposed to be Alyssa...hehehehehe! Emphasis on *supposed to be*. Thanks to Wyatt and Chris, the true star of the second set was Holly.
But you can see where that left Rose...

As characters, I like them both.
In terms of "what's better for the show," I have to go with Prue. The sisterly bond between the original three felt so authentic and that's where the Power of Three comes from. You can't replicate that connection with a relative you meet as an adult. Certainly not that quickly.
The next big thing for me is that her death destroyed Piper and Phoebe's characters. (I won't even go into detail or we'll be here all day.)
Thirdly, Prue had so much character development left to offer. She was finally letting go of being the surrogate mother to her siblings and setting out to find what she wanted out of life for herself. If it really did boil down to a choice between Shannen or Alyssa, I don't see what Phoebe brought to the show once her angsty love story was over.
Paige was so fun and refreshing for the show (it's difficult for any show to survive that long with the same old cast) but there were so many times you could see her being molded into Prue or into the Baby Sister role for the sake of the plot. If Phoebe had died, the dynamic of Prue, Piper and Paige would've been better because they could all still be their own characters.

Agree with that. However I think the most interesting setup would be where Piper died. But that's more on what her death does going forward with storylines I hated.
But if Phoebe died in S3. She'd remain a favorite of mine.
I just like Prue as the leader of the Charmed Ones better.
But believe me. I'm with you peytonmarie on what Prue's death did to the sisters and ruined their characters.
Phoebe is still the baby regardless of what the ordering is once Prue dies. I wish Paige stayed as the only child. That Piper always asked herself what Prue would do as she tries and or fails to lead the other two.

If it really did boil down to a choice between Shannen or Alyssa, I don't see what Phoebe brought to the show once her angsty love story was over. What Phoebe brought to the show was not meant to last forever, I don't think. There's only so many seasons you can have her be a free spirit without it becoming annoying. And as we saw on the show, Phoebe never really did grow up. Her young spirit and carefree attitude went from being charming and fun to being selfish as she turned her back on Cole and she became obsessed with having a kid. Prue had a ton of character development left. We could see her becoming more and more of her own person rather than a mother. And I think Piper would have done much better with her big sister always in her life.

Same here! It's strange because if she had died at that point, I'd be wishing she'd lived. Either way, it sucks. Yup. Paige grew up an only child and even after meeting the Halliwells remained fiercely independent. She wasn't anybody's "baby sister" in that way. There's that comment Phoebe makes to Leo about how Piper used to play mediator and now it's her job. Why? You're grown women. The age gap between a six-year-old and an eleven-year-old is significant. It helps having a nine-year-old around to intercede. But when you're all in your twenties? Grow up. Couldn't agree more! Which is a shame because Phoebe really did show a lot of promise over the first three seasons. What's weird is that Paige replaces her as the free-spirited sister whether she survives AHBL or not. They should've kept her on track and let her mature organically. But after Cole she was either jaded or as you said, obsessed with having a kid. YES. In some ways, the most tragic part of Prue's death is what it did to Piper
