If you could journey back into the past, and were allowed only one location and a week to be there:
What year would you choose... What city would it be... What would you do there... And if you could bring one thing back with you that could fit in the suitcase you took with you.....what would it be?
In 1976 I saw a film entitled "Sky Riders", about hang glider pilots rescuing a kidnapped family held hostage by terrorists in an old monastery. The movie was not well received but the photography work was breath taking.
So if I could go back in time, the year would be 1976. The location Meteora, Greece, to visit the Varlaam Monastery and watch some of the filming. Since the monastery has been around since the early 1500's, I would like to take some soil and stones that no one would miss. I would put them in a pretty jar or old bottle and put them on the fireplace mantle. People would think I was nuts and I would enjoy that very much.....

Interesting question. I'm reading a book right now that is set during the times of the Crusades, and while those were obviously terrible times for most people in that part of the world, I would want to go back there to see all the castles and see the way people lived their lives. I'm not sure of the exact years this all took place, and I don't know about a city. Just someplace in France with lots of little villages like the book is set in. If I got to go back there I would simply just wander around looking at all the landmarks that were new to people then, seeing the castles and the little villages. If I could bring something back that would fit in a shoe box it would be a book, so that when I got back in my own time I would have one of those really old-looking books you always see in movies. Kind of like Book of Shadows

Hello Dylan....
I loved your answer and it made me a bit sorry that I was so specific about members replies. So for all of you out there feel free to respond as Dylan...(By the way is it okay to call you that if my response follows your?)
I really enjoyed the idea of a book but, if you took something from that time period an brought it in to the future would you change history? I am not trying to be critical....truth is, I am an old Trekkie person and the first time I pondered something like this was after viewing "The City on the Edge of Forever" (4-6-67), with Joan Collins.
Maybe if you requested to leave a day early with the idea that you still had time, you could come home and have the book copied. Then you could either return the original or have the copy rebound...tell them it is a rush job and return that one. Years and years later when they do that dating thing....the big question would be....how could this be???
Sooner of later it would end up on History's Mysteries and only you would know the truth.....Being a bit of a Merry Prankster...I love the idea.....MLM

I'd probably go back to the late seventies and spend time with my family while they were young. My Mum, my older cousins and my second cousins etc...so the location would probably be Coventry and I would probably bring back some photographs.

MLM: Fine with me Or maybe for my book idea I could hide it somewhere, and then when I came back to the present, I could go and find it. Then it could look all dusty and old just like the BoS- can you tell I like that book?

Oh this is perfect for me! My family is always telling me I should have been born in the 70's, and I totally agree! Everything that I LOVE is always from that time period. I don't know why; I just love that time and everything about. I mean my all time favorite movie is "Grease" and that was in 1978, I LOVE the music and everything else. I'm not sure what city, but I'd find one! I'd have a bunch of fun there! I would go to concerts and drool over who everybody that was HOT back then and listen to the awesome music and go to movies. One thing I would bring back, hmmmm that's a tough one. I'll have to think that one through a bit more!

Hello Holly.....MLM here, or Samantha if you like....
Your post got me to thinking....maybe the shoe-box thing is not a good idea.....I think it hinders you from toting home something special. So I am going to modify my opener.
You would be traveling with a suitcase, so lets say that it had to fit in there along will all you took with you.
You gave me this idea because you are a music lover of that time period.....well, you will have money with you, and I think if it were me, I would purchase some record albums, (no CD's back then, and tapes were just starting out), I do not see this as causing any problems.....think of some of the ones you could purchase that will be worth money when you arrive home. Now you might not be a Stones fan, but if you came across a copy of, "Their Satanic Majesties Request" (1967)....forget the album.....it's the jacket that is worth money.....Oh, and not to worry, it has nothing to do with devil worship.....It was just Tricky Mickey's way of annoying the fans parents....(my father was one of them!!)
To Dylan I say.....good idea....sounds like something I would do!

There's a song out by Brad Paisley called, "A Letter to Me". That's the idea I would use--go back to the late 60's/early 70's where I could give me a letter letting me know that things aren't going to be as bad as it seemed back then. It would also let me see my mom and my grandparents and my aunts and uncles who have all gone on alive again. Maybe I'd go back for my high school graduation...June 10, 1971. Yeah, they all were there for that. Hmmm, what would I bring back....? Something of Mom's, no doubt about that, but I'd have to think what... Oh, if you're curious: Letter to Me.

I mean everybody back then bought that and still has it, so I think that's what I woudl buy! I'ma HUGE Michael fan, and God rest his soul, so.... Thanks for your great ideas! It helped me think of something to bring back!

I guess i would travel back to the mid 1950s to experience how the town was that i live in myself back then (i live in a big city). I would bring along my digital camera and a couple of memory cards for it and take hundreds of photos.
What to bring back, one of Elvis Presley's original singles he released threw RCA Victor. I would not keep the single when i got back, i would put it on auction and sell it. One of those in mint condition is worth a LOT of money ;D You might as well make a profit of your trip to the past, right ?

I loved reading Tolkien's books on Middle-earth, and was very impressed with the way Peter Jackson brought his writings to life. Having always desired to visit that part of the world, I would want to go back to the time period when they were shooting the scenes in Rivendell. This was some time between Oct. 1999 to Dec. 2000. That portion of the film was made in Kaitoke Regional Park in New Zealand, and though I would love to see them filming, I would also like to just walk around the beautiful sets by myself and pretend I was one of the elves. What would I take? Memories....
