Why does the show portray fire as something that is evil? Or associate it with demons? I mean . . . it's just . . . fire. Like water, earth air. Another element that can be both positive and negative.

Fire is the most dangerous in the smallest amount.

Fire is the most dangerous in the smallest amount. Fire, water, air and the earth are all elements that can be exceedingly dangerous. Yet, all four of these elements can have a positive effect as well. To label fire dangerous and not the other elements does not make any sense to me.

I can't say that any one of the elements is the most dangerous. All have the potential to kill. A raging storm has sunk ships, brought down planes and washed away towns and cities. Residents of New Orleans would agree with this. Those that live in tornado alley most likely fear nasty wind currents coming together to do the dance of death. This might be the worse as there is no way to receive much of an early warning of the coming events. Earth is an interesting one when you think of water mixing with it to give us deadly mud slides. Perhaps even earthquakes could come under that heading. Of all of the elements, fire is the only one that can be controlled at times. Back fires can be set to help put them out. Interestingly enough...often fire is a devastation that is caused by man. Sometimes on purpose.

Like I said, it's the most dangerous in the smallest amount. Some demons threw fireballs at the sisters; a handful of water, earth, or air won't kill anyone, but a handful of fire will. If the demons had the ability to create a flood, hurricane/tornado, or earthquake, then those elements would be seen as just as dangerous. But all they ever showed was a ball of fire the size of a hand.

All you need is a small amount of water around the nose and mouth to drown someone.
An air bubble in the bloodstream could cause someone to die.
And what about a rock falling from a high place and onto your head?

You're just describing what has happened on the show. You haven't explained why fire is considered more dangerous or evil than the other elements.

Among the four elements fire is the means of transformation more radical, nothing could be fire resistant you are right, some witches are firestaters but fire power is portrayed as a power rare on the side of good, common on the side of evil Charmed writers were often ignorant in a frightening way but some of them had a rather good knowledge of the subject
the power of fire is often associated with evil in the Middle Ages, I remember a lecture of history of art in which they spoke of the ancient negative view of the Fire tied to Aeschylus and his Prometheus: in this tragedy, Prometheus apparently is acting on behalf of humanity, but he does so in the wrong way, by means of deception, and his action will have serious repercussions on the conditions of the entire human race. Prometheus annihilates the principium individuationis must differentiate the men from the gods and the men immediately use fire as a weapon For this reason once the firewas used by the "wicked men" and perhaps someone in Charmed remembered it

It's both interesting and a bit confusing that fire is somehow connected to evil. In Matthew 3:11 and Luke 3:16 it is mentioned that believers will be baptized with both the Holy Spirit and Fire. Now the former sound gentle, but the latter is a bit scary. Any thoughts on that one?

In ancient Judaism, fire was often seen as a way of purifying rather than destroying, hence th reason for being baptized by fire--as in what happened to the Apostles during Penticost when a tongue of fire appeared on the top of each of their heads, and they were transformed.
Personally I think Charmed used fire as evil because they could do more special effects with it than they could with the other elements. It's the same reason why Phoebe got levitation when it had nothing to do with seeing the future--special effects--the same reason why she lost it--too expensive.

I suspect that you're right. It's odd that the series views fire as "evil", yet whenever Piper used her second ability in the later seasons, she managed to destroy others in a burst of flames. How ironic is that?

How ironic is that? I was just about to mention Piper and her ability to blow things up. The sea hag had abilities to manipulate the weather so they did utilize earth and wind/water a bit. Also in the titans episode, they did use wind. However, that was to fight the titans so it seems as if all of the elements are mostly portrayed by evil creatures. Also, for energy balls red was portrayed as evil while blue and white were good. But I think that red just seemed like an obvious choice for evil because they could just make an energy ball red.

It's ironic that Burge, Kern and their writers had taken this route, considering that Wiccans have a different idea on the symbolism of colors.

In fact, I had incorporated it into one of my fan fiction stories. I suggest that you find a site on Wicca and read on their ideas of color symbolism.

You wrote fanfics? *Charmed* fanfics? Are they here at the Cafe? If so, can you give a link--I'm very curious to see what you came up with.
