I've actually changed my mind about this. It wouldn't really matter if there were whitelighters or not because there's still plenty times that the show cheated death or lowered the stakes even without whitelighters. I mean, look at the first episode, of the whole series! That is one OP PO3 spell that DOES get used as an ultimate WIN button, MULTIPLE times, throughout the show. It's said in the following episodes:
S1E1 "Something Wicca This Way Comes"
S2E22 "Be Careful What You Witch For"
S4E21 "Womb Raider"
S7E22 "Something Wicca This Way Goes"
I'm surprised they didn't use this spell on the Source, but I digress. A show about witches can practically do almost anything. Billie didn't even need Coop's ring, to "go back in time", all she needed was her OP power of Projection, to achieve what she wanted. And, in S1E17 "That 70s Episode" being the first "going back in time" method to "fix" a problem. And, in S7E19 "Freaky Phoebe", Phoebe's soul was still fluttering around merely because of Phoebe's own "strong will" (nothing to do with magic) strong enough to linger...
I really don't think Whitelighters are the problem, the show itself is an issue, when you introduce magic, what really is at stake? That's why they had to create these arbitrary rules like "no personal gain" and/or "can't heal the dead", even though they still break these rules, constantly LOL
I mean, not even the pilot had this "no personal gain" rule. It just said "harm none and do what ye will". I think that opens up the can of worms of bringing people back from the dead, too which other shows/movies have done with magic, as well. So, in a show about magic, the concept of Whitelighters and Elders just doesn't phase me regarding being a "damper" on "high stakes" situation. That was already ruined merely for this show existing, in the first place.
