Season one is my favourite season. A lot of people seem to hate Prue, but I actually like how the three sisters had their own personality and one of them had to be the more level-headed one. It was also part of character development, anyway. The sisters gaining their powers and working together led to Prue becoming less uptight, Piper less insecure and Phoebe more responsible.
Like some others, I do wish Andy discovered their secret sooner, it just seemed a little weird to keep it from a childhood friend for that long. It would've allowed him to get more involved in their cases.
The Rex and Hannah arc could've lasted a bit longer, but that probably had to do with the season being produced in batches.
I love this season, I don't dislike any episode, even when the acting was atrocious like in The Wedding from Hell. The interaction between the characters was just always enjoyable. This season had the perfect balance of darkness and lighheartedness. The atmosphere was also more gothic and mysterious, which I loved. I also loved the setting of Buckland's and Quake. And the wardrobe was also really classy and realistic. Another thing I liked was the focus on Andy and Darryl's policework. It offered suspense and a connection to the non-magical human world.

All part of the reason I love S1, and so much from S1 didn't carry forward, I really wished it did. Also the wonderful musical score that was changed in S2. Most of us who re-watched the series in our board re-watches, noticed this. That and how very sisterly-centric all the episodes were. The Andy/Daryl relationship really did ground the show with a non-magical point of view. This was gone from S2, when Leo and then Cole started getting bigger parts. We still had Darryl, but his role was always so minor. Out of interest, when did you first discover the show. Did you watch it when it originally aired? |

Yep, I agree. The more I watch season 1, the more I love it. In a show about magic, it was by far the most realistic and believable with the way the magic was in their lives and their connection with Andy. I really liked Prue in this season as well. I wouldn't have necessarily wanted to hang out with her, but I could appreciate who she was, and she had plenty of strengths. I could completely understand why she was so uptight, and I think it added to her character because there were such good reasons for it. And as you said, it gave her plenty of room to grow. I do understand why they didn't tell Andy the secret sooner. Prue hadn't seen him in years, and they were different people from high school. Also, I think she was holding on to the idea of a normal life, and even though it couldn't last, I think the longer she kept him in the dark, the longer she could pretend that a normal life with him was possible. I also agree with enjoying every episode. The ones that were obviously of lower quality don't detract from my enjoyment of it at all, because I love the style with which they were created. It had this '90s innocence combined with dark subject matter that was a wonderful contrast. It also had a realism that other seasons were lacking. Their clothes were appropriate, their jobs were more stressful or boring rather than fun, and their faults were on display in a way they didn't get away with like in the other seasons. Prue was too cold and uptight, Piper had to learn how to stand up for herself, and Phoebe had to confront her shortcomings with not being responsible. I also enjoyed the feeling of everything being so fresh. Even though I've now seen the series about a hundred times, I can rewatch season 1 and imagine that I don't know what's going to happen, and the possibilities just seem endless. If the entire eight seasons had the same feel of season 1, I don't think I would have ever gotten bored. |

Did you watch it when it originally aired? Thank you. Such a shame about Darryl. He was a sympathetic character and with all the weird stuff that still kept happening in town, it makes sense he would drop by more often. Yes, I watched the show when it originally aired. I'm from the Netherlands, so that would've been a bit later than the US. |

S1 will always have a special place, in my heart. It's the only season with Andy, in it, and I think he's a fantastic character. I don't often find other people that enjoy the Power of Two episode, as much as I do. It was such a fun episode with no drama regarding Andy knowing if Prue is a witch or not. It's all about getting rid of evil and working together, in order to achieve it. Totally wish there were more episodes like this (which some of it made its way to S7, but Brody still is no Andy, but I digress).

As we've discussing around the board (especially regarding changes to the show) S1 feels the least tainted, and I've NEVER strayed from this opinion.
For a REAL authentic Charmed, S1 is it! Anything AFTER it, is no longer the original vision, of the show. And, I will die on that hill.

As we've discussing around the board (especially regarding changes to the show) S1 feels the least tainted, and I've NEVER strayed from this opinion. For a REAL authentic Charmed, S1 is it! Anything AFTER it, is no longer the original vision, of the show. And, I will die on that hill. I still stand by this statement. That being said, been re-watching some S1 episodes, in Shannen's honor. Watching episodes where ALL THREE of them using their ORIGINAL Warren powers (even off-screen or somebody else using them ones too), in "Protect/Save the Innocent(s)" type of episodes. I've watched the following, so far: S1E2 "I've Got You Under My Skin" S1E4 "Dead Man Dating" S1E6 "The Wedding from Hell" S1E7 "The Fourth Sister" S1E8 "The Truth is Out There...and it Hurts" S1E11 "Feats of Clay" S1E12 "The Wendigo" On S1E13 "From Fear to Eternity", now. I only have 4 S1 episodes left, from this criteria I've set for myself to watch. Before I move on over to S2. S1 is just so great, and I love watching it, over and over, again LOL Yes, I can re-watch S1 all day, every day ;P I'll never get tired of it. It always feels "fresh" to me, no matter how many times I watch it. |

The very first episode I watched or happened to take a glimpse of was 'Dream Sorcerer' in 1999 when it was screening at an aunts house live on prime time New Zealand television. I was 11-12 years old.
Its not the best episode. In fact considered one of the worst on the Season.
But Shannen's dedication to the script, character and direction still makes the episode enjoyable to watch. Its the first episode really dedicated to her being number 1x05. Where the other episodes focus on Piper or all 3 sisters.
I don't think I'll be able to watch Dream Sorcerer for a while now because that was the hock that lured me in - well at least Shannen anyway. This is also the first time since the Premier that Connie is also credited to this episode so I find it special that this is how I found the series.
I'm still reacting to the news of Shannen's death. I can completely understand how Paige describes about 'a part of me losing her too even though she never knew her'.
Have been doing a rewatch with my 13 year old niece nearing the end of Season 8. Its taken us a year she can tell I am resistant to rewatching Charmed right now because well - it just sucks that she is gone so young.
Dream Sorcerer kind of foretells of the 4th wave of feminism with the #metoo movement in a a nostolgic 90s TV show currently only in the 3rd wave of feminism and I love Shannen Doherty's performance in it.

I really don't think S1E2 "I've Got You Under My Skin" is that bad of an episode. It's actually the best PO3 vanquish, in the entire series, if you really think about it. Despite it being a Kern episode, it's one of his better ones, I feel.
Too bad he couldn't tap into this creative mind, for his future episodes.

I love the relationship between the sisters. It is what got me watching, and how they juggled normal life with having powers and fighting evil. Piper is such a sweet character. I just can't get over how much I hate her when she got married and had children. Prue was very mean in the start, and then she got better. Phoebe was just always my favorite, and loved her the most in season 1. Yeah i had a younger sister and a close cousin sister that used to watch the show together with me pre-teens. the relationship between the sisters and using your imagination as kids to be able to put yourself in the Season 1 positions of the sister. Discovering that they only have each other in this warped world of Good vs. Evil that they live in. Add in the comedy and tribulations of their boring everyday subplots and it is THE most decent season of the series. |

I love S1 so much. I can watch this season over and over, again and never get sick of it. This includes the early parts of S1, as well. In fact, I don't mind the early bits of S1 like S1E2 "I've Got You Under My Skin", S1E3 "Thank You for Not Morphing", S1E5 "Dream Sorcerer", etc. I love ALL of it xD Even if I'm not the biggest fan of S1E17 "That 70s Episodes" (like most people) & S1E21 "Love Hurts". At least, there's still some interesting bits to keep me entertained unlike other seasons with their poor episodes.
This season always makes me feel like I'm watching it, for the first time, even though I've seen it so many times! S1 is just simple times LOL
