I didn't like Phoebe as a columnist.
It just seemed that Kern & CO. wanted Phoebe to be the West Coast version of Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and The City.
Now as more time has passed , I always got the feeling that Phoebe was originally was going to be a Social Worker at South Bay Social Services. However when Shannen wasn't coming back to the show for Season Four. And having to scrap it once they had to give Paige a profession. Phoebe as a social worker makes a hell of a lot more sense than being a writer for the local newspaper. Yeah, I know San Fran is a big town but unless if she was writing books to go along with the columns she wasn't going to be that much of a success.
Phoebe could've attracted more innocents along the way and Mr. Callum seemed like a boss that Phoebe would've had to put up with in order to become a full-time social work anyway.
What do you think ?

I didn't like it because of the following reasons:
1. Phoebe was just handed the job. She had no experience or background, yet they give her the job anyway?
2. In a short time, Phoebe is being treated like some A-list Hollywood celebrity. Sorry, but I don't buy it. She's an advice columnist, nothing more.
It was a stupid idea.

The thought of Phoebe giving advice is laughable. She's smart, but clearly doesn't make the best decisions. Having a good heart doesn't always translate well to giving advice to other people. And it wasn't a very interesting job to hear about. It seemed less like a general advice column and more to do specifically with love. It might have been better if she had gotten a wider variety of questions having to do with other topics.
And the celebrity thing was the last thing Phoebe needed. While I like her very much, I think she probably did grow up as quite a brat. Then she has a few good years where she's saving innocents and going back to school, only to get messed up in the whole Cole thing and never take any responsibility. And then she ends up famous. I would have liked to see her struggle more at finding a job, as she did in the beginning of season 4.
Remember in that season 1 episode when Prue told her she should write children's books? That's what I could see Phoebe doing as a career. Maybe she could struggle for a while after college to find something to do, only to fall into writing. Towards the end of the series, we could see her form the idea to write books for kids.

The only realistic celebrity status I can see for Phoebe is becoming a popular YouTuber, podcaster and blogger and helping people through that. But since internet wasn't that awesome back then, I would go for social worker or counsellor.
I liked the way Phoebe handled Aviva and then later on cheered up the sick boy in Awakened. Trying to play Cupid to mend the couple Drazi broke up was also okay. But like Elle Em already mentioned, I would want Phoebe to deal with a diverse range of issues and not simply focus on love and couples.
Another thing I've noticed in season 1 and 2 is that Phoebe was really street smart. So maybe a private investigator? It does feel like the sisters do their own detective work all the time, the bulk of it done by Phoebe in earlier seasons.

I liked how street smart she was in early seasons. It's too bad that she didn't seem to be that kind of person later on, though. A private investigator or something similar would have suited her well. Maybe she could have found that she liked the type of work she saw Daryl doing, and got into it from there. Her talents were pretty wasted writing about love. I'm sure she helped some people, but she had such greater abilities.

Yup I did. Although I think Paige would have been better suited to it.

Maybe Phoebe could've done an Ellen De Generes type talk show on a small San Francisco cable network channel which wasn't big but enough to sustain it on TV so then she would've helped people there but not being a celebrity obviously or maybe did radio instead if not like Fraser Crane then.

To be honest, I was rather indifferent to the idea. Still am.

Another job that had possibility for Phoebe was at the auction house. She was able to help a woman reunite with her daughter. The reason she left was risk having a premonition every time she touched something. If she is supposed to have premonitions for a reason like help people, then should not leaving be the first choice? Wouldn't it be a chance to try and control her powers? To distinguish between premonitions where she's supposed to help and premonitions which are just showing her the past?
Then again, hospitals, morgues and graveyards are also best places for getting premonitions. But seeing and feeling pain and death daily on top of the deaths through demon fighting would've understandably taken a toll on Phoebe. It would've made sense if after that, the only job she would prefer was being locked up in her room and answering letters through her column.

Yeah, I can see her point about the auction house being too overwhelming. She already was a witch, and then to top it off, she'd have to have premonitions at work too. I get why she left, even though it would have been nice to see her struggle with the idea that someone may not be helped because she was leaving.

I truly think Phoebe should've graduated and been the social worker rather than Paige and let them find some other job for her. The other job I would've liked to have seen Phoebe get into would be detective work - her premonitions could've been so helpful in that, besides keeping them a bit more rooted in the real world rather than just chasing the latest greatest supernatural baddie. *yawn*
Advice to the Lovelorn made *no* sense. Now a regular newspaper person - again being able to use her premonitions - that would've made so much more sense.
I just hate how unimportant the power that should've been the most important - the one that led them to the innocents who needed help - became. When it's only use was to help her find which guy would provide the sperm for her daughter... *shudder*

Well Police in real life do use psychics to try and locate missing people, solve cold cases and find absent criminals so yes Phoebe could've worked for them in that capacity back in the day which could've involved supernatural stuff also and Paige as someone else suggested could've been a PI who worked on normal cases like finding information for people and infidelity which fronted what she done in secret also working on supernatural cases like haunted places and ghost or demonic possession alas Constantine say that people who knew the Charmed Ones and needed help on could go to which would be a paying business and a way Paige could've met charges through her Whitelighter gig to.

That was the premise of the TV series, Medium, I believe.
Yeah, I could get behind the idea of Phoebe doing something like that.

No, I didn't like it. As Tim had said, the job was handed to her and Phoebe became a celeb so quickly that it was not acceptable for anyone who'd watched it. And that all between 10 or less episodes, not believably. Still, the column became more important, besides that Daddy hunting thing, than anything else for Phoebe.

That whole Phoebe the A-List Celebrity was just so fake to me. No advice columnist can become that famous.
Did Alyssa becoming a Producer have something to do with that, I wonder. The "Phoebe the A-List Celebrity" thing started with Season Five, the first season Alyssa was a Producer of. I guess the writers were not willing to rein her in at that point.

I did It is true that she was helped by luck, but Phoebe, with her passion and her empathy, was perfect for this kind of work
I also think that Phoebe was better suited for a job as a social worker than Paige, I always thought that Paige was too restless, always looking for something different to be a good social worker However I cannot imagine Phoebe as a detective
I would understand from which episodes it'ld be possible to deduce that Phoebe has become a celebrity, certainly not by a common advertising of her column, I hope Where and when can I see Phoebe taking part in a galà,or some media events, acclaimed as a star on the red carpet? Where are the fans asking autographs?
I saw only the advertising, in the same style of the restaurant just opened in the square where I live: a large photo of the chef
In Jason's wish, Phoebe was a popular and famous woman,Jason wished she'ld become a journalist, a TV celebrity, sure enough he was not the man fit for her, he was not even able to understand her

I think as Es, Phoebe was best suited to work as a social worker that Paige!
Paige seems to have an artistic temperament, she painted, she loved to sing, she dreamed of traveling the world with Glenn, she was the free spirit of Halliwell's

It's such a shame that they tried to turn Paige into Phoebe and Phoebe into the STAR and Piper into the POWER OF ONE.

No. I never really enjoyed it. Phoebe's skills would of been better used for something where her powers and degree really get put to good use than offer advise in a column.

The concept behind it was fine, the execution was sorely lacking. It should have opened more innocents for her, getting all the mail, and her powers should have been subconsciously helping her dole out true and great advice, things that people wouldn't be able to think of otherwise. Instead, it simply became a tool for her ridiculous rise in season 5. It could have been good, just wasn't.
