I enjoyed having Phoebe be an advice columnist. If you put aside the fact that she became a bit of a "hometown celebrity", I think it suited her well. If you look past the obvious (the fact she was an empath) you can see other reasons she's great for it - she had a past, so to speak. She was a reckless teenager, a young twenty-something with "no vision of the future" (to quote Prue), then a mid-to-late twenty-something who grew up and took ownership of her past mistakes. She was in a perfect position to give advice to others. Yes, she had her own problems - as everyone does - but she was great at giving advice, in my opinion.

My main problem with PhoeMe's advice column was how it was treated with more importance than it should have been. And the fact it was used as filler to pad out many scenes. When PhoeMe focuses on her column she puts it as priority above everything else and makes it the only focus she has. The constant celebrity status coupled with it does it no favors as it serves no purpose in the long run. Hearing PhoeMe go on and on about how her deadline is the most important thing even during situations of dire circumstances got irritating. Not only that we are never given any glimpses or insight as to how or why her advice is inspriring or helpful we're just told as such simply because of how much everyone worships her. Even though all of her dating decisions were terrible and never seems to even learn the concept of the very same thing she's famous for. Despite being the "love expert" she constantly has a cycle of men that has to teach her about love and she doesn't even grasp the concept.
Season 7 is a good example of this, so many instance were the sisters in danger and all PhoeMe cares about is complaining how a man tries to ghost write a column in her name, how she needs to go to work to finish her column or how she needs to make deadlines it became so repetitive and largely served no purpose in the long run. For instance in Scry Hard when Piper is shrunken by Wyatt and trapped in the dollhouse with Leo she is presumed missing by Paige and Phoebe. PhoeMe's response is to go to work because her deadline is more important than her sister who's considered missing/in danger. It's how PhoeMe's annoying fixates the column as her top priority as if its life support that makes it obnoxious!
At least Bucklands served as a way to make magical artifacts meet together with the girls and P3 is the girl's hangout spot/demons sometime attack there (even if it is an excuse to promote bands it at least gets interconnected with the plot). With PhoeMe's advice column it just gives her an excuse to walk out of her Charmed One duties/ignore innocents or just fill up time in an episode I get bored just watching scenes with her column because they aren't interesting. Especially since after a while everyone just becomes PhoeMe's robotic worshippers. She writes an advice column, which isn't worthy of celebrity status.
Its easily the worst attribute of Season 5-8 PhoeMe.

I know I didn't like her as an advice columnist. She grew up as the youngest, so she never really had the responsibilities or experience, aside from men, that Prue or even Piper did, so she wasn't as equipped to give advice: no bills, no raising her younger siblings, and it seemed like she had a hard time holding a job prior to her advice column gig.

Not really.
Phoebe would have done better in an occult shop since she fell in love with witchcraft and wanted to help people. She could have met innocents there, the sisters could have hung out there, she would have had a job that she loved that also kept her interested in her craft. P3 could have been an occult shop rather than a nightclub, it would have suited her so well.
With Piper being a manager at Quake and then buying Quake and renaming it to Halliwell's throughout the series, therefore she would have been in the industry that she would have loved and hopefully that would have stopped her complaining about wanting a normal life.
Prue should have stayed at Bucklands with her taking up Photography as a hobby rather than a profession. Paige would have been a social worker, using her painting as a hobby and hopefully her painting all four of them in a picture then hanging it up.

It would have been great if P3 as a nightclub never existed, and Phoebe's shop was named that instead. It's easier for me to see Phoebe coming up with the name P3 as well, since it's a nod to their magic, than it is for me to see Piper using it. Piper definitely should have stayed in the restaurant business, and it makes sense to just keep going with her manager position, even if she doesn't like it. It's the most direct route to one day being a restaurant owner. And it would be cool if she one day bought Quake and made it her own, so the same restaurant is featured throughout the whole series. I loved Prue as the white collar professional. Photography as her hobby would have made sense if painting was also Paige's hobby, giving them a connection even if they never met. And it's a lovely idea that Paige would paint a picture of the four of them together, both because she enjoyed it and to keep things family-centered.

Phoebe would have definitely thrived working in that type of environment with season one being dedicated with Phoebe learning the Book and researching every element of witchcraft, she then notices her favourite metaphysical shop going out of business and then talks about buying it with her older sisters with them acknowledging how far Phoebe has come and them agreeing that she should buy it. I love the idea of Piper working up the chain eventually become the owner of Quake, later remaining it Halliwell's. I also love Prue being a white collar professional, with her using Photography as a creative tool. Paige's painting were rarely a plot point and it is saddening. I would have loved it if she had painted Prue like an angel with her looking over Piper, Phoebe and Paige with the phrase "the Power Of Three".

I disliked it then and I hate it now. I hate The Bay Mirror and Phoebe becoming this uber successful local celebrity of an advice columnist. S1-4.5 Phoebe would've probably balked at the idea and would've chosen a different job. And its just ridiculous that Phoebe would want any type of limelight after AHBL. Of course Paige already had cornered the Social Worker market (dont even get me started on having Paige quit that job) that also would've been perfect for Phoebe but I think having her take on a job that ties her closer to Daryl probably would've been a good alternate.

I didn't like her gig as an advice columnist. She was just handed it, and didn't have any experience writing professionally or have to work at it. Plus, almost nobody becomes a celebrity as quickly as she did, so I found it pretty disconcerting and mildly annoying to have her shoot to stardom as quick as she did. The celebrity thing seemed like it went to her head, too, and it seemed like it made her way more self-absorbed and selfish, and care less about her sisters, nephews, innocents, etc.

It still makes sense, for me, for Phoebe to be an advice columnist, but I think the whole "celebrity thing" was a bit much. I like when she's actually talking about what advice she can give to the people she's responding to like S4E16 "The Fifth Halliwheel", S5E17 "Lucky Charmed" (kinda), S6E7 "Soul Survivor" (kinda), S6E8 "Sword and the City" (kinda), S7E1 "A Call to Arms" (kinda), S7E2 "The Bare Witch Project" (kinda) & S8E11 "Mr. & Mrs. Witch". It just felt more genuine and like she cared about what advice she was giving her readers.
I still think both Phoebe & Paige (mostly the Paige part) would work well as advice columnists.

She got WAY too famous and advanced in her job too fast. Since when does someone become a celebrity and that famous as an advice columnist when she was only working there for a couple of months. Three or four tops at that point. Phoebe would have made a great social worker like Paige. I've always wondered, if Prue was not killed off and Shannen fired, if it would have been Phoebe working at SBSS as a social worker. I also like the idea of her doing a job that has her tied closely with Darryl helping innocents as CharmedFaith suggested.

I liked Phoebe in Season 4 as a columnist. Its when she suddenly became a celebrity (on top of a mermaid) in Season 5 when things moved to quickly.
I did like how Phoebe had her escape from her Charmed life and she was more the academic and the psychology part complemented that all.
I also liked how Phoebe had a workplace mentor in Elise, a strong female in a senior position.

I didn't mind the job itself, but how it was written. The fame that came with it was silly, you would think Phoebe would want less celebrity so that she can carry on her Charmed duties. I also expected Phoebe to find innocents through this job, which I don't think it ever happened. Finally, it just became a way for her to find rich men to date (Prince, Jason), and an excuse to balk on Charmed duties. Phoebe writing her column from home would have make sense with occasional trips to The Bay Mirror ofc.

No, not an occult shop - that's dark magic and Phoebe has enough troubles with dark magic having been born over the Nexus. You want her to own a WICCA shop - that's white magic.

So did the newspaper syndicate her column or something to other newspapers and that's how her fame took off from there? I would've much preferred her stardom to begin in S6, since Jason was the catalyst for that. Between S4E22 "Witch Way, Now?" - S5E1 "A Witch's Tail, Pt 1", there's no reason. It just is...

I didn't mind her working at a paper. It could've been fun if she was a journalist and was out and about more. She'd have reasons to always be out of her office.
Elise really went so easy on her. I suppose she overlooked all her absences because her column brought so much press to the office. Lol
