If Prue, Piper and Phoebe started out with a different power? What would it have been?
I think for me, only Premonitions would remain. I just can't see it being removed. It might have been fun if Piper didn't have the power to freeze but the power of Super Speed, we saw her use this in Awakened due to consequences. I really loved this power. As for Prue instead of Telekinesis, I will have to think on that one.
Okay out of the three sisters, you can leave just one of the three the same, but the rest not. What would you all do and come up with?

I'll agree with you regarding Premonitions, but I would've preferred Prue, as the leader, having them - and then Paige getting them (and only them...) once Prue is gone. But rather than the way Phoebe got them, I'd want Prue to have time manipulation - not molecular so it can't turn into explosions. That way she could both check the future and check the past - *but* not be able to do anything to change it - a bit of a combination of true astral projection and premonitions. For Piper, since she always felt a bit invisible as the middle child, I'd want her to have that power. That leaves freezing molecules for Phoebe, since you'd need some sort of defensive power. But if it develops into speeding molecules, it would be her version of TK - speeding things up - not explosions. Note that no one has an active power. That's on purpose so they'd have to work together with spells, not powers, to destroy the bad guy/gal. They'd always have to be the Power of Three, never the Power of One.

^ All of this is great stuff. Thank you! Other members have mentioned that power for Piper in other threads. As soon as I read about it, I thought it was perfect.

Never was a fan of Piper's exploding power. Now I didn't mind Freezing Time. But her being invisible is a cool one.

I'm basing my decisions on the whole past life evolution thing, that is rarely brought up.
Prue: Freezing Time, which would evolve to being able to turn things into ice. Piper: Molecular manipulation, she can even separate molecular structure. Phoebe: Fireballs, which would evolve to being able to control fire. Maybe being able to use fire to teleport. Paige: Conjure The Elements.

Honestly I may have preferred the sisters having no active powers. It would have been cool to see them rely solely on spell writing, potions, and each other.
I do agree with what many have said in terms of keeping premonitions. I wish the other sisters weren't so powerful. So this is my alternative to no powers:
Prue: Deflection
This is sortof like Prue's telekinesis only in a weaker more defensive and less offensive form. Since demons have powers (fire balls, energy balls) I think it's important for the sisters to have something to defend themselves. I would want it to stay defensive and slowly grow to Prue having more control over where she reflects thing too. High level demons shouldn't be vanquished by one of their own energy balls so they would still need the power of three. Paige would get this power or something like it when Prue died (maybe she can make forcefields/energy shields instead). Prue's deflection could also grow to be able to make a energy shield - over innocents, her sisters, etc.
Piper: Intangibility
This is the ability to walk through walls. Piper could use this power to get information on both innocents and demons - sneaking through walls, spying on demons, going into places like crime scenes, police station, etc. This could also provide Piper with good self-defense - if a demon attacked her she could pop through a wall to get away and confuse the demon. I think this could grow into her being able to take her sisters or other people through walls with her.
Phoebe: Detection
Detection is the ability to sense people and things when they are in your vicinity. Phoebe would be able to sense innocents and demons in her vicinity. Maybe they are looking for a innocent in an apartment building - Phoebe could find which apartment with her power and Piper could enter through the wall if the innocent was in trouble. She could also use this power to find objects and clues. Maybe the demon left an antheme behind that the sisters could use to find him. I think this one should grow into Phoebe being able to "sense" more things about what happened in a room or place. Was the innocent scared? Did they escape? Did they shimmer out with the innocent?
I think these three powers compliment each other nicely. I think they are all also weaker than the powers the sisters originally had in season one.

I like your ideas Forbuss. Yes they do compliment each sister well and make it the P03's needed still to defeat upper level evils of course.
To add to Phoebe's detection ability she could also use her power in cases where the sisters need to know what type of being their dealing with which touching whatever thing holds that information on like the book of shadows say Phoebe senses who that is and how to kill it negating time spent on researching them.

I think it would be cool if they all had some type of inactive psychic power. Phoebe could continue with her premonitions as we saw in the show. Then perhaps Prue could tell when people were lying and Piper could have precognitive dreams.
Or perhaps Phoebe could only see into the future, Piper only into the past, and Prue could only see things that were currently happening somewhere else.

The combination of these three powers would have allowed them to defend (and not be offensive) and protect themselves and innocents from demonic powers until they could ID the demon and come up with a vanquishing power of three spell or potion (if it wasn't already in the book). This would have made the sisters *TRULY* the protectors of the innocent and not the vanquishers of demons.

I realize her and Grams may have worked together to vanquish demons a fair bit, but Patty didn't have a killing power. I would also say that Penny didn't either. I think she gained high mastery over her powers but we have never saw Penny vanquish a demon with her power. We've saw her use them against people but never vanquish them. This is why Patty and Penny knew the book so well and as Penny famously said "I wrote the book - all the good spells anyway". Penny and Patty had to rely heavily on spells, potions and other means instead of their powers. The first time we saw the sisters add anything to the book was when Phoebe wrote the warning about Cole (someone correct me if I am wrong).

Actually the first time someone wrote in the book was when Phoebe added the spell to vanquish the Woogyman and then in season 2 she wrote about Anton to warn future generations about him then.

I'm never able to think what different powers I'd want for the sisters, because for the most part they're pretty well suited (until they start making no sense) but this!! These powers would be perfect and would make for a really interesting show, especially because they'd have to depend on each other a lot which would just make the dynamic they already have so much better.

I am generally I think more into the powers of the show than most. I actually don't think the magical world and universe drew people into Charmed like it did with a show like Buffy. But of course, Buffy was meant to be a vampire (and demon) slayer - a weapon against the forces of darkness. Sure, Buffy slaying the creatures of darkness protected people and we saw many, many instances of her saving folks and protecting what in Charmed were called "innocents". Charmed didn't place the magic and their powers at the forefront, which is why the quote "a show about sisters who happened to be witches" and not witches who happened to be sisters. But I was really drawn in by the magic and powers. I play a lot of video games and watch a lot of fantasy and sci fi shows so I have collected a lot about supernatural abilities in my brain. If anyone is interested, this is the universes I took the powers from: Deflection: Charmed Universe Intangibility: X-Men (Shadowcat/Kitty Pryde had this power) Detection: Elektra.. This one is a bit more complicated because in the universe of Elektra, she actually doesn't have "powers". Of course in our world and the Charmed world it would be considered a "power" but essentially she studied with ancient monks and they taught her to control and focus her mind much more than other humans could. She could "read" the energy of her surroundings to find people, objects, etc. She also possessed very low level telepathy only with others who had similar mental focus. Maybe it would have been cool if Phoebe could have been able to send telepathic messages to her sisters and other witches ONLY. Might have been interesting!

But, I can see why the fantasy drama aspects can draw people in, who like the fantasy world of Charmed, as an escape from the real world, and it lets them enjoy something that helps them to forget their problems from the real world each week they watched. She could "read" the energy of her surroundings to find people, objects, etc. She also possessed very low level telepathy only with others who had similar mental focus. Maybe it would have been cool if Phoebe could have been able to send telepathic messages to her sisters and other witches ONLY. Might have been interesting! Yeah, I'm with you there forbuss, one of my favourite things about the show was the powers (despite me really liking your ideas for their different powers). Charmed first appealed to me because it was about witches, and I'm really into the supernatural, and I adored how they had active powers. The sisterhood (once I realised it was about sisters, which was pretty quick) was another huge draw as being a sister is one of my favourite things about myself (also why I loved Piper's kids; I love how they were aunts as well as sisters, as an aunt myself). However, my biggest gripe with their powers of the show is how they could be inconsistent-- I like things to have rules, because otherwise it kinda takes me away from being inside the world. That's the biggest reason that I can't ever really think of what I would've liked them to have, because I love the powers they had, but the main thing I like thinking about is how I would've done them differently-- what rules I'd define them by, what could be vanquished, how they worked, and finally how they would progress. Especially because I loved the sisterhood, I adored how they had the power of three, I thought it was really inspired, and I'll always hate how in my favourite seasons they kinda left that alone compared to how much I'd have it. Which is why I like your ideas for what their powers could've been; it helps keep that power of three aspect. Also, it's funny you mentioned that you got the idea of intangiblility from Kitty Pryde, because that was one of the main reasons I liked the idea of that power-- I adore Shadowcat. She's one of my favourite X-Men.
