This was legit all explained in the show. The Source couldn't go directly after the charmed Ones or he would break the Covenant of good and Evil. There was rules put in place for this. The Source then broke those rules to go after the Charmed ones when they became a threat to him. Also you are talking about a plan to help with the exposure versus a plan to kill the Charmed Ones. Two different things that should have been handled two different ways. Also The Source plan to Kill the Phoebe, Piper and Paige was working until Cole showed up. When? When it was explained that Source can't go after them directly? What stopped him to kill Piper in Brain Dead? The only rule Source broke was taking the Hollow. Which was stupid by it self since there was no need for him to take their powers. Kill Piper in Brain Dead. Problem solved. Unless Patty has more hidden kids out there rooming the world! lol No it was the same plan. And it would have worked 100% if Cole didn't somehow of screen saved Phoebe. But Prue was still lost!

Your right sky1. It was never stated The Source can't go after them directly. He only broke the rule by trying to use The Hollow. But The Source in S1-3 is written differently than the one in S4. I could excuse the many differences in his appearance but never sloopy writting.

If the Source was in the least-bit intelligent, he would've had Shax continue to stalk Paige and either kill her or turn her long before she ever found out about her half-sisters, since he found out about her before they did.
That's why it would've made more sense for him never to be seen and instead have his henchmen like Shax be the stupid ones. He had to be stupid in order to keep the Charmed Ones (and the show) alive.
For someone that stupid to supposed to be the leader of all evil was very stupid on the writer's (Brad Kern...) part.
Had they just not did the bit about him coming and just show Cole talking to him in that hellish place that was so very different than the boring Underworld in 'All Hell Breaks Loose' but then never shown him (or ever show the Elders, period) and show the sisters in the Underworld but never vanquishing him since as the Source he can't be vanquish, and never show the sisters going Up There, I think it would've been a much better show because both the Elders and the Source would've seem like something more than just mere humans, which they seemed like once their faces were shown.

This would get an A+ from me. I really don't like what they did with the Elders and the Source. Too bad, maybe the big bad of the series should of been a Warlock instead. After all, they were the counterparts to Witches, and made more sense than the Source of all Evil. Like you said Es, the true leader of evil shouldn't be vanquished. Maybe keep him in the underworld or hell or whatever place he comes from, a place where he just isn't allowed to resurface to earth. The same way Elders, shouldn't be allowed to leave Up There and come down to Earth. The middle plane Earth is what is more important, not what is down below or up above. The place we saw the Source in during 'All Hell Breaks Loose' really looked hellish to me. Now that is what you call, a Source of all Evil. With a throne, A sword and what I think are large wings attached to his back. Too bad, this wasn't the only appearance the Source made in the series, and was never seen again. Otherwise, never showing him would be my number 1.

The source story line had some interesting twists and turns. I like the hierarchy, the book. The vampire queen and the seer. If anything the source being vanquished in four and having the seer in five while showing the feud would make for a compelling story arch. Where the source may be defeated, but not destroyed completely.
It would be true evil where a serial killer may go down or a robber is caught yet what they did and the effects aftwards aren't forgotten.

The source had promise or the Red Source did. Now looking back maybe he never needed to appear at all. Like the Elders we learn about them but neither ever are shown because they truly exist in Heaven and Hell or Up there and Down Below.
But the Source shouldn't be defeated. How can the ultimate evil be killed. Contained or banished to the far corners of hell or locked up maybe.
Other genre shows never killed the ultimate evil. Only defeated but never permanently killed.
Otherwise maybe All Hell Breaks Loose is just first and last appearance.
They said he surfaced in the Underworld didn't they. That means that version of the Source comes from the true hell? Maybe he should be unable to physically enter the earthly plane?

I don't see why he even needed to appear at all.
Adding him made Charmed feel too Buffy for my taste with battles and demon fighting. I'd keep him out of it.
Shax made a more convincing big bad for S4 instead. That would add more weight to Season 4 as an arc. Someone should write a fanfic that keeps him around.

The problem for me was the timing of the Source's appearance . . . or whether he was shown at all. My problem was that the series had hinted the Source being this ultimate figure of evil. Calling him "the Source of All Evil" was ridiculous to me, considering that evil is not some sentient being. In the end, the Source simply struck me as another leader of some demonic sect or order - a very powerful one, but not indestructible.

He can't be killed. But he could. So just was just a powerful leader of the Underworld. He was nothing more than a demon who in the end felt lower level. I'd buy Zankou, Barbas or even the demon in Give Me a Sign as a leader but not him.

Because it's impossible to defeat ultimate evil itself for good. But in the end, he was nothing more than a typical demon. The series had a habit of ruining a good thing because I was interested enough with S1-3 building him up. How scary he felt and acted behind the scenes. So maybe he should have just stayed hidden.

Well, the difference in appearance. The Source as presented in S3 was the Devil. But the one in S4 was presented as a mere demon. Maybe the show was better off ditching the Source plot altogether after S3, once Prue died. The Source has no reason to wage war on the new Charmed Ones, who were not strong yet to fight him. Then the series could just bring in Zankou and reveal him as the face under the hood maybe. S4 could just focus on Paige, maybe Shax can just become the big bad of the season.

I think they showed him at the right time. It was just Season 4 that took it to far. To string people along for to long would've been a mistake. Season 3 we get a quick cameo, Season 4 we get a few appearances culminating in a big showdown in Season 5, with a it being revealed that his essence survived.

Even though I liked the Red Source with wings who looked scary as hell.

That's why I like the idea of different henchmen. Cole tells Phoebe that "the Source is here". To me that means he's usually not, which makes sense. If he himself is never defeated (because he can't be...) but instead it's the various henchmen (which Cole and Zankou and others could become) who are constantly after the Charmed Ones and that have to be defeated, especially if they were more scary like the Red source or Shax or Belthazor. Nothing scary about the other ones.

Which should be true for The Source too. Neither cannot physically enter the mortal realm on earth. Which makes sense. None of the others came close to being scary like the ones you mentioned. Maybe that should have been the only time we ever saw The Red Source and Source in All Hell Breaks Loose on the only rare occasion he surfaced in the Underworld. Otherwise never seen but sending henchmen.

Yep, then I'd have more fun wondering what they look like. And I got chills hearing about The Source in S1 and S2. I'd rather let my imagination stay wondering.

Would you guys be open to a new source each season. I was curious what the service and the baby would be like as the source.
