The height difference really is awkward. The oldest looks like the mother in this photo. 

It's funny that they really don't look like college students at all, and look so much older to me.

So this is the attic for the reboot right?

Charmed reboot cast and EPs respond to Holly Marie Combs' objections

The stars and producers of The CW’s Charmed reboot aren’t letting original Charmed star Holly Marie Combs’ objections to the series get them down.



During the show’s Monday presentation at the Television Critics Association press tour, the Charmed team was asked about how they felt about Combs’ vocal opposition. Although they admitted it was disappointing, they said they’re choosing to focus on the positive response.



“Of course, you can’t help but feel disappointed because I think the script is fantastic,” said reboot star Madeleine Mantock. “I really hope maybe she’ll see it and like it.” Mantock went on to add that she believes Combs is definitely entitled to feel however she wants because the show was a big part of her life.



“I think that there’s also a lot of positive stuff coming out, too, and I think that we’ve collectively made the decision to focus on that,” said star Melonie Diaz.



Everyone on the panel acknowledged that they aren’t trying to fill anyone’s shoes or trample of the work done by the original series. “We’re only here because of them and that show,” said executive producer Amy Rardin.



The original Charmed starred Combs, Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, and, eventually, Rose McGowan after Doherty left, as demon-fighting witches and ran for eight seasons on the WB. The CW series, which premieres this fall, reimagines the Charmed ones as three sisters played by Mantock, Diaz, and Sarah Jeffery who live in a college town and discover their magical powers after the death of their mother. When the reboot was first announced, it drew strong criticism from Combs.

“Until you ask us to rewrite it like Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work. Charmed belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye,” she tweeted.

Madeleine Mantock, who co-stars as one of the central trio of witches, said, "You can't help but be a little disappointed, because I think the script is fantastic. I think it's going to be incredible. I hope that maybe [Combs] can see it and like it, but on the other hand this was a part of her life, and she's entitled to feel however she wants."



"We have tremendous respect for the foundation they laid," added castmember Ser'Darius Blain. "We're not trying to fill anyone's shoes."

The reboot’s producers also explained that they chose to reboot the series instead of reviving it because they felt like it ended “beautifully” and had eight years worth of mythology. “That show wrapped up everything up so wonderfully,” said executive producer Jessica O’Toole. “You feel like they told a complete story.”



EP Jennie Snyder Urman added: “We didn’t want to mess with that mythology, obviously, because it was eight years.

I don't understand why they are not expecting blacklash. I mean if they renamed the show something else, nobody would really complain, they still might but at least it wouldn't be going by Charmed and upsetting fans. That is why the reboot of Sabrina is getting so much more praise, for being so much different than the original 90s series and being named something else.

I'm really wanting to see how this rates, I'm expecting it to start out with high ratings, and maybe drop. But it might actually appeal to new fans who never saw Charmed. So they will be the target audience that keeps watching, and also fans who like the Metoo stuff or the LBGBT sister and such representing the community.

Is that really true, doesn't seem like it's from an official source? All three having different fathers.

If that's the case. Any bets, one father is mortal, one is a whitelighter and one is a demon. But if that's true, I'm glad all three are still witches and not hybrids it appears. Because I just really don't know if it's true, it really feels weird to me.

Unless the fathers somehow all come from another special family line themselves or wanting to get hold of the Charmed One's powers and mate with the mother, or the mother made a pact or was forced. Maybe all the fathers are related themselves.

But I'll wait for an official source to confirm this.

The height difference is super noticeable, I don’t get why they’d cast an actress significantly taller than the other two.

Personally, I'm fine with the height differences and I don't know why there's a fuss about it but to each their own. I like it especially when the oldest is in the middle;it reminds of Charlie's Angels the movie where Cameron was taller than Lucy and Drew.Regarding them having different dads it's true.There's even talks of making the middle sister's father a brujo-a male latinx witch.

It is true about the fathers. Ran into a new article. I just wonder if perhaps all three come from a different Wiccan or witch culture from the fathers side.

There has to be a reason for the Charmed Ones in the reboot to have ancestry from I assume three different fathers. So the mother wasn't just knocked up by three different guys randomly.



Found this article interesting. Also having someone with knowledge of Witchcraft is something Classic Charmed I think didn't have. I hope they treat the different cultures with respect and not offend.

8 Things to Know About the 'Charmed' Reboot Premiering this Fall

1. The sisters’ different racial identities will inform their approaches to magic.
The sisters have the same mother, but different fathers, Urman confirmed: “They’re multiracial, the family is, and the girls do have different fathers.” Those differences will be explored as the sisters gradually come to terms with their powers, she added. “We want to explore each of their unique heritages, and the interesting ways that different cultures intersect with witchcraft.”


2. The writing staff includes a Latinx witch.
Executive producer Amy Rardin just casually dropped that tidbit into one of her answers, and thankfully a TCA reporter followed up to get the deets. “[The writer] and his friends started a coven, I guess you’d call it,” said executive producer Jessica O’Toole. “They would meet once a week and do spells and put energy out there towards goals that they wanted to accomplish… It's directing energy and putting out what you want to come back.”

OK, so this unnamed writer isn’t levitating anything in the writers' room, or reading people’s minds, but he is bringing the perspective of real-world witchcraft. “We have all kinds of belief systems in our room,” O’Toole continued. “We have people who really think if you manifest something, it happens. We have more traditional religious people in the room. We have skeptics. It's very much like what we have on the show.” Oh, and the show’s wardrobe department is apparently “like a witch grotto,” decked out with tarot cards and curtains, and I am going to need a set visit invite ASAP, at this point.


3. The show will use its college campus setting to tell stories about assault and harassment.
While honoring the original show’s supernatural escapist tone, Urman confirmed that Charmed will tackle subjects like immigration, sexuality, and sexual assault. And much like Jane the Virgin does with its telenovela references, the show will use its genre as a deceptively light way into some of those tough subjects. “You don’t want to be giving medicine; there’s a huge wish fulfillment about witchcraft, but hopefully the political undertones are just part of that fabric.”

Ser’darius Blain, who plays Galvin (love interest to Mantock’s character, Macy) said that he was attracted to the show because of its willingness to tackle timely subjects in the wake of the #MeToo movement. “We're in a moment right now where we are actually starting to listen to women. So I thought it was a great opportunity to be able to support that movement, to support these strong voices.” He praised the producers for “curating such a great group of strong women that are so indicative of every background and every culture that we have here in our country, especially at this time.”


4. Without naming names, the show strongly implies that President Trump brought about the apocalypse.
It’s implied in the pilot episode that the (ahem, unnamed) current president of the United States has a hand in the upcoming apocalypse which has been foretold in a prophecy, and which the witches are fighting to prevent. “It’s complicated,” Urman said when asked about the decision not to directly name the president. “You want to tell the stories and have the magic and the whimsy, but the climate that we live in now is going to be informing every decision we make.”

Mantock added that the show “is very rooted in what 2018 is, and I feel really grateful to work with people who want to talk about the issues that I talk about in my kitchen.”

5. There will be no rhyming couplets in the reboot's spells.
One major way the reboot is diverging from the original is cutting ties with this very distinctive element. “[The couplets] were so tied into the original, and something about the rhyming felt like it belonged to that show,” Urman said. “Especially because we're wanting to get into different languages and different cultures.”


6. The character of Galvin was rewritten as a scientist.
Early casting notices described the character as an aspiring filmmaker, but that was changed to make him a scientist like Macy. “I loved that they changed my character from what he was originally into a scientist,” Blain said. Because I was a science nerd when I was a kid and now we have a black scientist on TV. We've got girls, women with strong political values. And I think all of that is indicative of where we are right now: there’s no one size fits all.”

7. Don’t rule out an appearance from the original cast…
“There's always multiverses, and you never know,” Urman said, when asked about the possibility of the original show’s lead actresses–Alyssa Milano, Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs–appearing in the show. But this is very much a hypothetical, and nobody from the reboot has reached out to the actresses as yet. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for the foundation and the groundwork that they laid for us,” added Blain.

8. …but after her criticism of the show, don’t hold your breath for a Holly Marie Combs appearance.
“We’re empathetic,” Melonie Diaz said in reference to Combs’ brutal Twitter tirade against the reboot. “This was a big part of her life.” Mantock admitted to being disappointed to read her comments, “because I think the script is fantastic… and I hope that maybe she’ll see it and like it. But on the other hand, I get it. It was part of her life. It is still a part of her life. And I think she's entitled to feel however she wants.” Blain concluded, neatly, that “We’re not trying to fill anyone's shoes. We're trying to get our own pair of shoes.”

What does everything think of these?

All I can say to all of this is "shudder*. Especially the bit about each sister having a different father. Finding out that the ages of the sisters shows that Patty was pregnant with Paige during that wonderful Christmas video turned me off of her so she was no longer my favorite character. I hope they give proper back stories for how she could have three daughters from three different men.

Although if they really wanted to do that, I feel they blew it with the two younger actresses - those two look too much like sisters and not enough like their mother to truly make me think they have different fathers.

I also hate this emphasis on science explaining the powers. When they tried to explain Piper's freezing by saying she manipulated molecules, that's when the original show no longer seemed magical and fun, and that's what it seems like they're doing now.

And, of course, the whole emphasis on the political pattern of 2018 totally completely turns me off.

More and more I wish it was truly its own show with its own name, since it will obviously have its own mythology. No way this is a reboot or a remake or a re-anything.

I'm sure a lot of this has to do with me being 65 now when I'm definitely not part of the core audience this show (I can no longer call it a reboot...it's not...it's truly just a ripoff), but I keep thinking that just reading others summaries, the way I've been doing it for "Supergirl" is the way I'm going to "watch" this series. s

Perhaps unlike the plot summaries for "Supergirl", the plot summaries for these will catch my interest and make me want to watch. Then I'll just figure a way to binge-watch it, something I have no desire to do for "Supergirl".

Looks like Science vs Magic is going to be a topic too.

This show doesn't seem that magical. Way too much influence on politics, Metoo and issues of the current era. That I'd rather get the blu ray of Classic Charmed and rewatch that in HD every Sunday Night.

A new promo came out for the rip off(I'll be calling it a rip off from now on) and people on Twitter are continuously dogging the show. The new whitelighter power of transportation/teleportation looks exactly like how the witches and wizards Apparated in the Harry Potter film series. People are also calling this show a rip off from Supernatural too since there are elements from that show spilling into the Rip Off.

It truly is a big mess...

It truly is a big mess...

And I LOVE how much they're dogging the show. I mean, I know it probably makes the cast and crew feel bad and some part of me feels like they really did not expect as much backlash as they have been getting. But they forget that this is a beloved show and lately, a lot of the 90s and early 00s shows have been getting renewed either on Netflix or on cable TV. They should have done the same instead of reboot it. So, this backlash is fair game to me.

Okay first of all Three Daddies?

Does it mean Source, whitelighter and mortal? Or maybe the twist is the Mom is an evil witch of the family line. How did she end up getting pregnant so quickly with three different dudes not to mention abandon the first kid? Or maybe the father ran away with Macy after finding out the truth about Macy's mother. It would also explain why telling her two remaining daughters about sisterhood sounds so corny and unconvincing. Like those demons trying to act like normal average human beings. Maybe Mommy Dearest was trying to create the Triad with her daughters to defeat the Source.

All those political and Me Too movements being part of the show didn't shock me. But seeing a whitelighter named Harry enter the room like wizards in Harry Potter in the promo titled "Girl Power"....   

Curious, which elements of Supernatural are being ripped off?

They actually should have not called Harry a whitelighter and used a different name. Appears they want him to be more Watcher less whitelighter.

I feel they should have ditched whitelighters and came up with something different as a guide or advisor.

They seem to have ripped off Harry Potter as Harry teleports like they do in the films. With the teleporting ability.

Rupert Evans plays Whitelighter Harry Greenwood in this version. An academic type prone to wearing cardigans and occasionally mentioning Roxane Gay, he's more similar to Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer than the original's strapping Leo Wyatt (and is therefore probably less likely to be a love interest for these sisters).

"I think he has a bit more about him, I hope," Evans said at TCA in regards to the Buffy comparisons. "And I think the writers and the team and everyone's been very been very encouraging about what we're going to do with the Whitelighter and with Harry in the forthcoming season."

The original Charmed's sisters could teleport thanks to magical balls of light called orbs. Executive producer Jessica O'Toole told the TCA audience that the sisters can still teleport, but "it doesn't involve an actual orb."

Bringing in Real world issues won't help the longevity of the reboot. It will just make it look dated in another decade and make rewatching this show boring and dated. Classic Charmed holds up well despite the era it was in. Real World issues were not as heavily included like this one is.

Will anybody care about it in another decade when the next political movement and current issue is dealt with.

That's why for this show to do well longterm. It should tone down the political stuff asap.

And Trump could be out of Office in a few years. So the reboot needs to adjust come Season 3 if its still on air. Making him starting the Apocalypse really dated and a waste of time. That reason is really boring and stupid.
