Probably because they rattle. I grew up back east. Nobody had any fear of garter snakes. They were rather cool!

I haven't been in this thread much, looking at how it started, it does seem like like they backed away from the Wiccan aspects of the show, instead of embracing them.
The BBC show Hex, was a little more into embracing some other concepts that Charmed only barely skimmed, but was apparently not a big hit as it closed after two seasons. I didn't realize this when I started watching it, but it was on in 2004-2005, making it a contemporary of Charmed. It ended on a very strange note, leaving us to believe they did not know there would not be another season.
Anyway, certainly stepping away from the Wiccan aspects made the show lighter and not as edgy as the first few seasons.

As much as I like CHARMED and HEX, I am a little disappointed that both shows seemed to be heavily influenced by Judeo-Christian religion and mythology. I wish both had gone beyond that.

Sometimes it's difficult for writers to crawl outside of their own skin without turning totally demonic!

i fail to see wat u are talkin about wicca is all about boriin old people in cloaks healing the sick. CHARMED is about three young women battling evile and i dont think after season 4 things went dwn hill infact i prefer seasons 45 and 8. 6 wasnt as good and i choose not 2 watch 7 bbecause leo is fab and i didnt like him goin crazy not 1 bit. in fact when the firt three seasons were concerned u got the impressin that prue wa the best she was the one havin the final battles and it made her seem that she was more powerful when she wasnt they are all eqqual.

Can anyone learn to spell or type properly? (ok, now that is out of the way)
I am Wiccan. If the stories had just been about Wiccan ritual, it would have been a boring series. I do ritual all the time-there is no visual "hocus pocus" and no, Wicca is not just about old people healing the sick. (to the last poster)
I would have liked more holidays, appropriate use of the Pentegram (although during the story about the 4 horsemen, Pheobe does say it was originaly a good symbol) and such.
The only real beef I have are two things:
1. NO witches were burned at the stake in Salem. Not one. (not to mention the fact they probably werent witches at all and not one of them was Wiccan)
2. You cannot be a Wiccan and be a Christian (half the time they wore the cross around their necks) but you can be a witch and Christian.
Other than that, I felt it was a fun series.

Wow, you would think with the success of all the paranormal TV series on today that the network would not have pushed the supernatural(no pun intended)or wiccan aspect of charmed under the rug but in fact they have. Point in case Paige's wedding was so mainstream it just didn't fit. Perhaps that is why so many of us old school fans are finding these past few years disappointing. It seems like the original writers went to great length to teach the audience about wicca to give the show depth and an edge, but now they stay clear of it to perhaps grab a broader audience. Am I the only one that feels this way? You could be right on that one ...I wasn't really thinking that much about it. Personally, I feel the reality shows have taken over television; there are so many of them now and new ones keep coming in that there is no more space for the wicca-supernatural-themed shows. I guess people would rather watch bad singing or everyday stuff than stuff you don't see all the time. What has America become? ? I know what you mean. I am an anime fan and my one friend always says stuff like, "I can't believe your into that stuff and don't you ever watch sports " . Also when I bought one of the charmed seasons at walmart he said "geez what is wrong with you" points to the family guy and southpark seasons and says "that is the stuff your suppose to be watching."

Well your friend shoulnt be telling you "shoulds" any way. Everyone has different tastes.
But as far as supernatural themed shows, the only ones I really remember are Charmed, Supernatural, Buffy and Angel. After a lot of tv, thats not alot of shows.
There are however reality ghost hunting shows out. And there have only been a handfull of anything close to the reality of witches movies out there.

I like Charmed, Supernatural, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Moonlight *Just recently*..............Angel. But I can't stand South Park.
I'm very girlish in a lot of ways, but I'd get mad if someone told me that I should by buying Barbies, dolls, & stuff like that. That is wrong for that friend to do that. My brother is like that with me.
There is this new reality show called "Can You Duet". I don't like it. The only reality shows I ever watch if I watch it at all is American Idol.....mostly because of Simon. I like picking on him for being a jerk, & maybe The Biggest Loser. I love makeover shows. Other than that, I don't like em.

Here is a listing of Horror TV shows that had seasons since 2000 (Charmed fell under this category) from a TV database. Some shows started prior than 2000. Afterlife 2006 - 2007 All Souls 2000 - 2001 Angel 1999 - 2004 Big Wolf on Campus 1998 - 2001 Blade: The Series 2005 - 2006 Buffy, the Vampire Slayer 1996 - 2003 Charmed 1998 - 2006 Dante's Cove 2005 - 2008 Dark Realm 2000 - 2001 The Dead Zone 2001 - 2008 Fear Itself 2007 - 2008 The Fearing Mind 2000 - 2001 Hex 2004 - 2006 The Hunger 1997 - 2000 Jekyll 2006 - 2007 Mad Mad House 2003 - 2004 Masters of Horror 2005 - 2007 A Model Life With Petra Nemacova 2006 - 2007 The Mummy 2001 - 2002 Murder in Small Town X 2000 - 2001 Night Visions 2000 - 2001 Nightmare on Elm Street: Real Nightmares 2004 - 2005 The Outer Limits 1994 - 2002 Poltergeist: The Legacy 1995 - 2000 Real Scary Stories 2000 - 2001 Scare Tactics 2002 - 2008 Special Unit 2 2000 - 2002 True Blood 2007 - 2008 Wolf Lake Some were short lived and this does seem to include BBC shows, like Hex. There may be more, which fall under the SciFi/Fantasy category which most would consider more supernatural.

Checking SciFi/Fantasy you come up with shows like:
Blood Ties (which may or may not be dead) Dark Angel Dark Realm Dead Like Me Dresden Files (which I liked and would have done better if the producers hadn't messed up the order of the shows). Ghost Whisperer Harsh Realm Haunted Heroes (more SciFi than supernatural, but they have do have powers, some of which are just like those of the sisters and various demons) Merlin Moonlight (mentioned) New Amsterdam (which is simply a good show in general) Night Stalker Pushing Daisies (which I note hestitantly) Reaper Saving Grace Sheena (Yuck but sorta qualifies) Smallville Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital Special Unit 2 Torchwood (more alien than supernatural) Touched by an Angel Tru Calling (which I liked, but just didn't attract a large audience) WitchBlade (which ended before it's time. The star of this show or of Tru Calling would have been a better choice for the Billie character, but then who wouldn't have been. Of course the character would not have been able to have been a student; too old).
I've probably missed some, but many of these shows were probably worth missing.

They have an anime version of witchblade out. Though I'm not really sure how you'd feel about all the jiggling and jangling in it.

I have like........130 channels through the cable company I'm going through. So............I think it probably has a lot to do with the shows being in other countries, but not in mine. & channels I don't have of course.

I never saw Charmed as having anything to do with Wicca. The sisters were genetically born witches with special powers, more akin to Samantha Stephens and Sabrina Spellman than any real life Wiccans. I'm sure there were many people (mostly teenagers) who were inspired to check out Wicca because of this show, but otherwise, it's 100% fantasy.

You could remove every reference to Wicca from Charmed, and nothing significant would be missing. They threw the term around a lot in the early seasons, but, as Betty said, it really had nothing to do with Wicca.

You could remove every reference to Wicca from Charmed, and nothing significant would be missing. They threw the term around a lot in the early seasons, but, as Betty said, it really had nothing to do with Wicca. And, many of the references weren't even accurate to begin with, anyways. Anyone expecting a perfect, faithful portrayal of real life Wicca in Charmed will be sorely disappointed. That being said, like a broken clock, they were accurate a couple of times. I cite this line from Phoebe in the very first episode: "An it harm none, do what ye will," really is the Wiccan Rede, and the show's use of the term "warlock" was far closer to Wicca (where it means "oath-breaker") than shows like Bewitched and Sabrina (where it simply meant "male witch"). Of course, it's worth pointing out that both of these examples are from the very first episode. The Wiccan Rede was never cited again after this episode, and the sisters' moral code eventually became "no personal gain." And, we ALL know what happened to warlocks as time went on.

I wonder what happened to that. Just ask Phoebe's old high school friend, Rick.
