If you ever get to see Holly's interview which is part of the new big Book of Shadows DVD set (I saw it on Youtube, but it's since been removed), you would see that she's still very, *VERY* bitter about the way her friend, Shannen, was treated. If THAT doesn't prove that Shannen didn't quit but was FIRED, nothing will.

There is also a interview just a little bit after Shannen left charmed where she mentions it. |

 Okay people why she left is up to her to actually come out and say truthfully? I don't care why she left. I loved her in Charmed. I actually like her in all her stuff. I wish they would've brought her back though during the rest of the seasons. It would've been nice to see her. I hope they do a movie or something because I really miss Charmed.

Wow!! This is my first visit to this location and I am still attempting to digest all that I have viewed. This issue still seems to be a major bone of contention with Charmed fans well after the fact. Interesting!!!
I am a strong fan of the show and have been since the second season. I am disappointed that SD did not remain with the show, but I think her not returning saddened me the most. I continued to watch, as I hoped that someone in the writing department would realize that a power of four might be the shot of B-12 that the ensuing seasons might need. To my dismay this never materialized.
Okay, maybe I am a little off point here, but what I want to present is difficult to put into words without appearing like a hypocrite. As I stated in another location I do not know any of the cast on a personal level and therefore do not desire to make negative statements regarding issues away from the camera BUT, I do have to wonder if there might not have been a hidden agenda on the part of one of the leads. Please understand, I am not saying that is was premeditated, but could have been a natural progression on the part of the individual depending on the nature of the person.
Maybe it is just me but I thought I saw a subtle shift in power after SD departed the show. If I had had control I would have listed the main characters as follows: Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano and introducing Rose McGowan as Paige. To me that would have appeared as a correct and proper procedure. That is not the way it went down and I am not the only one that found that curious.
Next, and this might seem silly and perhaps none of the principals had any creative control over this, but with the direction my head is moving in I found this very telling.....one should take a good look as how the DVDs are displayed.
Now I have been employed in the field of marketing and packing is big business. I have also had acquaintances in the film industry and titles are a main issue that has caused many feuds. This is an area that is not to be trivialized. (If you doubt me rent "Interview With the Vampire" and watch the closing credits. In short, Mick Jagger did not attend the London School of Economics for nothing.)
Season one shows SD in the center on the cover. The set I have has six containers with one DVD each. A very expensive packaging concept and was not continued. The first has The Book of Shadow on the cover, the second showcases SD, the third is with AM, and the fourth is HMC. The fifth has the three sisters with again SD in the center. The sixth looks like they ran out or ideas.
Considering that SD was the lead and AM was hired well after her and HMC I have to wonder why she was second and not third. Perhaps you have to be in the business to notice this.
Season two's box cover is staged as the first, but now each case contains 2 DVDs so there are only three in the box. The first has SD, the second has AM and again HMC is displayed DEAD last.
Season three has AM in the center of the cover, again HMC gets no center recognition and SD is to the side. Previews of coming attractions??? As for showcasing the order is the same as season two. HMC is LAST.
I do not have season four but I do own season five and AM is front, center and first. I am sorry but you would be hard pressed to convince me that this is an accident of marketing.
I do not desire to be judge-mental or cruel but.....I think I see a power play that has yet to be addressed. Considering that this is all water under the bridge and matters not any longer, who cares.....but since this still appears to be a major issue maybe there really was a victim who chose to take a walk like a lady.

MLM (hope you don't mind the abbreviation--I tend to do that to everyone just because it's easier to type), welcome to Prue's Fan Club! Ever since I saw your first post, I've been hoping you'd find your way here!!!
There's very little doubt in my mind that although I think that creative control between Brad Kern and Shannen had a lot more to do with her being fired than the so-called feud between Alyssa and Shannen, there's no doubt that Alyssa was a side benefit. I can't help wondering what sort of control she had over Kern and/or Aaron Spelling that what you talk about is what happened. Even the change in Phoebe from little sister to sex symbol (symbolizing Alyssa's desire to have people no longer think of her as little Sam from "Who's the Boss"--when I loved her best, just like I loved Phoebs a lot more than PhoeMe/Freebie--but instead as a sex symbol) shows that shift of power that you refer to.
Again, welcome to the cafe and the fan club and I, for one, hope to read a lot of your posts here!

Thank you for your welcome to The Cafe and The Club. I would have dropped in sooner if I had know about Prue's Studio. I am still finding my way around this nice little cafe. Which I might add I am very impressed with. This is a nice comfortable site and referring to it as a cafe has a realistic feel to it. More coffee?
Also, I discovered the Prue/Shannen Fan Club Roll Call. What is that and how do you join? Do I just go it the thread and say, Hello I'm here?
As for the topic at hand I completely agree with you that Kern/Spelling sat at the top of the pinnacle regarding Shannen's departure. Who else could hold such power? I also am not subscribing to the rumor mill with respects to the feud surrounding SD and AM as gospel truth. I read the tabloids to kill time on check out lines. If I purchase one it generally ends up at the bottom of the kitty litter box. But....I also believe that most myths and urban legends are loosely based on some small truth and over time are greatly expounded upon. I therefore suspect that there is something to the stories that are floating around in cyber-space. I hope the aliens are being entertained.
I do not wish to spin nasty tales about AM as that would be foolish, but I thought I would share not my take on the stories but simply comment on various observations. Something seems to be amiss here and AM might really have been a clog in the machinery.
Everything in the beginning; at least according to the accounts I have read; appeared to be all sunshine and lolly-pops with the three girls. I find that understandable as any new situation is a blank page. But as time goes by alliances are formed, bonds are created and friendships blend.
The problem is that very often three can be an unlucky number. Remember high-school. Oh yeah, lets do that again!!! Very often with 3 it will be 2 against 1. Something will crop up and not all will agree. SD and HMC ventured into this with a bond already established. AM was odd girl out right at the start, it just might have taken a spell to finally erupt. By the way, most of this is guess work with a little common sense and life experience poured into the brew.
Your comment on how AM could obtain such power is a good one. I do not have an acceptable answer. All I can say is that I have watched people spin webs that have astounded and amazed me.
Primarily I question that which is visible. The credit listings and the marketing tactics can be both subtle and obvious. I have no idea how much leverage AM can have with marketing but I do know that a performer can demand credit rights. HMC who stated that she loved her job might have just decided to shut up and go with the flow. Who knows, maybe one of the reasons she became so whiny is because she wasn't acting.
And this brings me full circle. At another location on this site I mentioned my thoughts on the girls acting abilities. You might have read it. Well if HMC was up-set about SD's departure she took it to the screen. Like wise AM's lack of emotion was evident. We all know that from the first episode Prue and Phoebe were at odds with each other....sisters often are and nothing new there. So why not use that? Dismissing SD was counter-productive. The two of them should have used reality to their best advantage and when it came to sisterly love....start acting. After all...it is your job. And Blessed Be.......

Most people just call me Es, so free free to do the same. LOL, you're right; it truly has that feel to it, which is why I think we all feel so comfortable here. Well, when the Cafe was very new, you had to join each Fan Club in order to gain entrance, by asking for entrance and then both receive the Custom Title and get the password. A number of years ago they decided against that and they've never brought it back. (I was taking a sabbatical away from the Cafe for various reasons, so I'm not sure why) So right now, the Roll Call is more a way of saying, "I'm a Prue-fan and want to post here"; it doesn't do anything for you. And all I can say to all of that is AMEN, sister, AMEN! And to you, also, Blessed be! |

I did put my name on the Prue/Shannen roll call and voted on keeping the Fan Clubs open. I find the Fan sites to be a fresh idea as I do not recall seeing threads like this at other locations.
I have noticed that by a persons avatar it shows you are a member. Do they still do that. Also I would dearly love to have an avatar but I didn't see anything listed here that was related to Charmed. Have I missed something?

Since that's no longer the case, the admins no longer add that Custom Title to your nameplate when you join. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the suggested fics. |

MLM as far as Alyssa is concerned, she is always second to Shannen in promotional things because she is the 2nd best well known actress right behind Shannen. Holly is/was the least well known out of the 3. Which is why she was never looked at as teh lead actress in Charmed after Shannen left and why she got the "as Piper" since they wouldnt put her first in the credits. Alyssa got the "as Phoebe" in S1-3 to show her importance, and its usually used for the 2nd highest paid actor/2nd lead charecter which is why Holly got that notice S4-8.

It is nice to know why Shannon left the show. Too bad that she couldn't come back for whatever the reason was. I was hopeing she would. They could have had her as a Whitelighter.
As to 90210 I have to agree Shannon was a good Brenda I am glad the she will play her again.
I think that Shannon played Prue very well.

Maybe someone will kill me but, I think that the TV Show would have a better prosecution/ending with Shannen and Prue character. I love Charmed, and i "pretty" much like the way it was, but after the 5th season, it has become really inconsistent and a TV series that has moved a long way from the main purpose. They had few ideas (low budget as well) to create something original and darker like the first season. Prue is my favourite character,and I adore Shannen (so maybe I'm on her side) but I strongly think that she was alright when she said that in her 30s she wants to do a TV Show that let her to grow as an actress. Anyway, it's obvious that when Shannen left, the show had a bad downfall, and I also think that it's thanks to Holly that Charmed went on for another five years. (that's only my opinion, respect pls!) <3 peace and love
