Did Patty go away for like 6 months while she was pregnant? I mean, you think they'd mention something about that.

From what I gather, Patty must not have shown very much at all. As was explained in Charmed Again, Part 1: Piper only thought mommy had put on a few pounds. Apparently, Prue did not notice anything at all (a fact which makes absolutely no sense unless you consider the possibility that Patty never showed much during her 9 months). Not being a woman, I have no direct experience with this. My sister certainly did not possess this ability any of the four times she gave birth. However, I understand that some women can do this. Amazing!

It is possible that Patty could have done a spell to hide it a bit. Or Grams could have. It would make sense, it wouldn't be surprising to also note that Patty may not have been around as much. For one, she could have been with Sam for a while. Because let's face it, as vandergraafk stated, it is pretty unlikely that Prue wouldn't have noticed.
Which still makes me wonder, Grams had a book of spells for Prue/Phoebe/Piper when they were little. Is that not personal gain?

I hadn't thought of that one. In fact, your explanation makes the most sense to me. Wouldn't those busybody Elders have noticed a pregnant Patty? Cloaking her pregnancy from the Elders makes perfect sense and obviates the need for even mentioning that Patty had put on a few pounds. That could have been explained by her work at Buddy's, the greasy food joint!

I never understood Patty and Penny's reasoning for giving Paige away. Because they feared that the Elders might do something to her . . . like take her powers away? It seemed as if they were more concern with Paige losing her powers than allowing her to remain with the family.

It had to do with the fact that she was product of a witch and her whitelighter. So the Elders didn't want this occuring, EVER. There's a huge element of fear here.
On top of that, they could revoke both Patty and Penny's powers. They could also take the sisters' powers.

So, the Halliwells not being a family of witches were more important to them than the entire family being together? And I doubt that the whitelighters would have such power over any witch. When Piper and Leo's first wedding ceremony was interrupted in "Magic Hour", only Leo was punished. He was physically and in a most painful way orbed from the ceremony.

They could have felt that maybe having four children would somehow mess up the Power of Three. Key number being three, it's possible that maybe four wouldn't have been as powerful (three being a magical number).
Also, they could take away powers or at least influence other two. Remember the "unspeakable wrath" thing Phoebe was so afraid of?

I believe foxfire is correct. The first three children were destined to become the Charmed Ones. Destiny also created a back door. In the event that one of the Charmed Ones might die, there was always Paige lurking in the background.
So, why care about the Elders? Well, these twits strike me as being rather puritanical, and so obsessed with rules that they might miscontrue a destined event with depravity. Doesn't Blinded by the Whitelighter convey this impression of the Elders and their ilk quite well?

Remember the "unspeakable wrath" thing Phoebe was so afraid of? All you're telling me is that the family's abilities and positions as witches meant more to Patty and Penny than allowing Paige to be a part of the family. And quite frankly, that does not put them in a very good light. What "unspeakable wrath"? The only one who felt it when Piper and Leo's first wedding attempt was found out . . . was Leo. And since when do guardian angels have the power and right to give and take away magical abilities?

I wouldn't be surprised if Grams would sacrifice that girl for the Power of Three. She was a hardcore witch, unlike Patty. I mean, it's dumb but it's logical. Besides, there isn't any other true way to explain it.
Leo wasn't the only one hurt by the Elders. Personally, I think Piper would be more affected. Her love's been taken away from her and she may never see him again and has no way of knowing if he's alright. On top of that, the sisters had the consequence of not having their sister on their side because of her demon fighting strike.

Well, the Elders might have forced Grams, Patty, and Sam to go before The Tribunal, if they'd found out about Paige. The Tribunal certainly had the ability to strip Phoebe's powers.
Speaking of which, what would have happened to Paige herself, had the Elders discovered her identity upon being born?
I would speculate that the Halliwell family would be severely punished, and the Elders would "confiscate" baby Paige, bringing her up to Elderland to raise her strictly under their influence.

Is this an excuse? Or has this ever been confirmed? I find nothing logical about Grams being willing to sacrifice Paige for the Power of Three. That tells me that she values them more as witches than simply as her granddaughters. And I find that sad.

It's my own conjecture as to what the Elders' mindsets would have been back in 1977. I don't think they would have killed Paige, but they wouldn't have trusted the Halliwells to raise her after Patty and Penny "broke the rules."

When Paige joined in season 4, I wish the writers had done more with her character, but instead it was Phoebe and Cole all season long. I think her best boyfriend was Henry. He was just charming, and wish he was brought in earlier for more cute Paige/Henry interactions.
