I'm kinda happy I'm not the only one who was bugged by the episode.
I remember every time I watched the episode, I've felt disconnected. By now I'm use to it, but way back I was always feeling like we were never watching the full finale.
In the beginning of the episode, it feels like they're starting it off as if they're going to do the whole "48 Hours Earlier" scenario. Shax then goes and attacks Prue, Piper and the Doctor,(after Shax blasts Prue and Piper) but then we're pushed into Prue and Piper going out in the public hunting for Shax. Now it just feels like they omitted the beginning of the episode and just gave us the "climax" of the episode before the big finish. They didn't even include a scene with Phoebe looking through the Book for Shax's entry like they've done in Seasons past and future.
Now I know we don't know the entire details of what the producers, more so Brad Kern, was thinking when the episode was being written and set up, but I would love to know why this episode went the way it did. Unfortunately, we'll never know considering this was aired what 15 years ago? It's a shame, really.

I wonder if the original 4x01 was meant to be a flashback episode depicting the events leading up to 3x22 while 4x02 would pick up from where the cliffhanger left off? I can't believe Kern would've purposely left the episode so incomplete like that, so some of the story had to have been lost when they were forced to rewrite the beginning of Season 4 to kill Prue and introduce Paige. Outside of Prue dying offscreen, "Charmed Again" feels extremely disjointed from "All Hell Breaks Loose."

Dr. Griffiths was clearly meant to be more than just another Ensign Deadmeat character, that much is clear. As I said, when Shannen was fired, something got lost in the shuffle. Instead the doctor was just swept under the rug and never mentioned again.
I would love to get hold of the original Season Four scripts (that were written before Shannen was fired), assuming any still exist, and read them. Perhaps they would reveal what role Dr. Griffiths was meant to fill, before he was downgraded to an Ensign Deadmeat.

Season 4 was obviously meant to start far differently than it did, and the original 4x01 would've undoubtedly had stronger continuity with 3x22. The episode was very clearly setting up a storyline that was never able to happen.

Kern REALLY should have considered this before he fired Shannen. Should the productive running of the show be put first, before his male ego?

" Say whatever you want" it's not a nice answer, even if it'ld not seem, the manners are appreciated If you search you'll see that there is a thread that speaks specifically about this problem, in Death Takes A Halliwell there is a discussion between Prue and the Angel of Death, probably your memory is linked to that episode Your manners are not better to begin with either. And your conviction and your lack of argument material proves abundantly that you were born at the late 90's. No way you would know the details i do, you know... manners or not

You mean the same rubbish papers that keep saying that Elvis is alive? I don't have to say that the tabloids are hardly an accurate source of information. I don't know what you were watching, but that was definitely NOT what happened at the end of All Hell Breaks Loose. Prue did not choose to die and Death did not show up. I think you're thinking of Death Takes A Halliwell (in which Prue meets Death), not All Hell Breaks Loose. AHBL was already filmed and completed when Shannen was fired. There was no "death scene" for Prue because, at the time, the writers had every reason to believe that Shannen would be back for Season Four. Lmao im pretty sure you dont even know that Doherty owns the rights of the last episode. How are you certain she did not take down the part that has her killed off. Im not gonna argue just for the sake of arguing you're not worth my time

It also marks the start of a storyline about Phoebe's battle to save Cole from the dark side of the world. That theme will continue until May, ending the season on a cliffhanger . Speaking to the New York Daily News, Kern said, "we couldn't come up with a more shocking finale than we have. It will absolutely change their lives forever, and it will be one hell of a cliff-hanger."

I cannot believe that there's still even a debate on whether or not there's "missing footage" of Prue's death, or whatnot. It's well-known that Shannen was fired AFTER the episode had even aired, so there were never any scenes of Prue dying to begin with. 3x22 was always meant to have a cliffhanger ending, period. For whatever reason, some fans just can't accept the fact that Shannen's firing was a completely unplanned, last-minute decision. You'd think that the glaring discontinuity between "All Hell Breaks Loose" and "Charmed Again" would've been enough of a clue that the start of Season 4 was a hasty rewrite, and yet mythical tales of a long lost "Episode 3x23" still persist to this day. Anyone who wants to see how Prue's death might've gone should watch the excellent video ShiningAllure made on YouTube. It's 100% fanmade, but it's very good and as close as we'll ever get to seeing "footage" of Prue's death.

Im not surprised that you find this story gap natural. Im gonna refrain from ever posting about this subject again. You're dead set on for a reason that is perfectly clear.

Im gonna refrain from ever posting about this subject again. You're dead set on for a reason that is perfectly clear. Actually, yes, I was, and there was NO "missing episode" or "deleted scene." All you need to do is read the fine collection of old articles that Val1993 amassed here for proof of it. "All Hell Breaks Loose" was written and filmed ENTIRELY before Shannen was fired, and it was ALWAYS meant to end the way it did. The ONLY reason there is a "story gap" between 3x22 and 4x01 is because the Season 4 storyline that 3x22 was originally setting up had to be scrapped at the last minute in order to write Prue out and Paige in. None of it was even remotely planned out, whatsoever. It was only a lucky coincidence that this happened after a cliffhanger finale.

Charmed22, I'm not "arguing for the sake of arguing", I'm telling you a solid fact. Shannen was fired after AHBL had finished filming.
She was on location here in Canada, shooting a TV movie, when she got the news. This was after S3 had wrapped production.
There is no Prue death scene in AHBL, there never was, because at the time the episode was filmed, they didn't know that Shannen would not be coming back for S4.

Even if this mythical second part of All Hell Breaks Loose existed, there would be no reason for it not be aired. Letting an episode sit on a shelf when it could be making money for its owners (DVD/Blue Ray, Netflix, syndication, etc.) makes no sense at all.
Besides, if such an episode existed, one or all of the cast would have mentioned it in the last 15 years.
Of course, no such episode exists. No doubt some are mistaking fan made videos for this mythical lost episode.

As I've said, I think some fans just have a hard time accepting the fact that Shannen's firing/Prue's death was a completely unplanned, 11th hour thing. They really want to believe that Prue's death was something that was meant to happen, something that had been planned out from Day One.

As per usual with Charmed, TPTB got lucky. With that S3 cliffy and with P3H2O.

As per usual with Charmed, TPTB got lucky. With that S3 cliffy and with P3H2O. Very true. I wonder what they would've done had 3x22 not been a cliffhanger or had the Patty/Sam affair never been introduced? Even as it was, they had to slightly bend canon to introduce the idea of a fourth, long-lost sister, and previously-planned storylines had to be cancelled/reshuffled.

What WOULD they have done had S3 ended like S1 and S2 had, with the sisters just dippy bopping along, with no cliff hanger and no one on the brink of death. Obviously, they couldn't just have Prue gone for no apparent reason when they came back for S4.
I guess they would have Prue die off screen and open S4 with her funeral, telling us just what happened to her.
Chuck Lorre did that when CBS canned Charlie Sheen from Two And A Half Men.
