It's quite plausible for Melinda to move from Virginia to Massachusetts. It would have been a difficult journey for her, but it was plausible. She could moved from Virginia to Massachusetts by sea. When New Englanders migrate to another location during the 17th century, they did so as individual family units.

Very interesting question. Although the show was filmed in LA, and going by real behind the scenes, we'll still see stock footage and it still films in LA. So maybe LA would just be more believable. But won't matter, as I'm sure the writers would treat whatever location is picked as they did with San Francisco.
That said, where I think they should have set the show, maybe Boston or Virginia Beach.
But, if Charmed had the budget and truly filmed in San Francisco, I'd be fine with that setting, so nothing changes, just the way it is filmed would be so much more believable, the city would be used better than canon.

I guess LA since it was filmed there. It looks like LA whenever they showed sisters outside running down a street. It couldn't look more like LA than SF if they had the Hollywood sign in the background.

Why was the show set in San Fransisco? Is it because that's where they found the exterior house they wanted to use? I am assuming all the 'Charmed' intros of SF are just stock footage...

The exterior house is actually a real house in LA. I think it came down to just using the stock footage they had for San Francisco which was cheaper than filming a whole new intro, unless Connie had a specific reason for wanting that as the setting, San Francisco, that we don't know. San Francisco played very little role in the series overall. Guess, they couldn't afford to actually film in San Francisco, so they went where most shows filmed at the time normally in Los Angeles. Nowadays, everything typically films in Vancouver Canada or Atlanta Georgia, due to tax breaks, as it is too expensive to film in Los Angeles these days. Everything on The CW doesn't film in LA, like they did back in Charmed days on The WB.

I am on the east coast of Canada - a small city, but lots of major Netflix shows and movies are filmed here. Sometimes I feel bad because filming in Canada takes a lot of work away from Americans - part of the "deal" (legislature) is that the productions need to have a certain percentage of "local" people working on the production (cast & crew). But it does bring a lot of work to us here! However, a lot of "bigger" (ish) names don't want to film in Vancouver, which I understand. It takes people away from their families, loved ones, community etc.

Here's a related question - where would they actually FILM a Charmed movie if Netflix decided to produce it? Could "Charmed" be filmed in a place like Vancouver, or Atlanta? I think they easily could, because the show was set in SF and filmed in LA and somehow managed to look like neither of those places... At least from my Canadian perspective. The "outdoor street" scenes (like in "Extreme Makeover World Edition") look like a really low budget 'New York' type of fake set feel.

Unless they can get Tax breaks to film in LA, which seems unlikely given how few shows shoot in LA these days.
Might be why an animated film or mini series would be way easier, those filming issues are a non factor. Especially if it is easier to animate San Francisco much better than trying to make whatever they film a movie (like the show) to look like SF.

It couldn't look more like LA than SF if they had the Hollywood sign in the background. Yeah they may as well have set it here given it was filmed here. So all the locations don't look like LA whenever they try and convince us its San Francisco. Ideally, If I had to pick two locations I voted for Virginia Beach which I believe has a New Age Culture there or something (so it would fit right in for Charmed) or Boston. But the show wouldn't have done any better than they did with SF, which wasn't handled as well as it could be. Just used for stock footage. But a fanfic series sure could have fun with any of those locations. Just checked and Constance M. Burge was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I thought she was born in San Francisco and that was the reason for why she based it in SF. Always wondered why San Francisco was used as the setting, or was it just for having access to stock footage.

Isn't San Francisco kinda known for being "free-spirited"? I don't know, but I always felt San Francisco fitted them finding they are witches and being different and not conforming to the norm.
I just can't picture them on the east coast not on a coast at all^^ LA could have been an alternative, sure.

I think New York City or New Orleans. Both are big cities, so it would've been fairly easy for them to blend in. New York City would've been an especially good choice, because it's slightly more touristy than New Orleans and any sounds from demon vanquishing could've been passed off on a neighbor or tourist and nobody would bat an eye, if anyone noticed at all.

I definitely think that they needed to live somewhere urban to blend in more, unless they went in the complete opposite direction and lived out in the woods or something. If they literally live around no one at all, they could realistically practice magic with no one noticing. Same for living around so many others that people are used to ignoring each other.
The one thing I don't see working is a small town because there's usually just enough people around to not be entirely alone, and people are going to pay more attention to things.

I don't think a small town works, as they'd be exposed easier.
Out of the choices. LA would be the easiest since they filmed there. So it would really look more real and make the city be its own character. It's not like they tried to do faking San Francisco.
But, I think no matter what they'd ignore the culture of wherever it was set. So maybe LA would be easiest, as most of the cast and crew live here, so they'd really get the culture right.
But, ignoring behind the scenes. And just picking two choices, would be a good setting for the show. New Orleans or Boston.

I chose Seattle.
I would have also kept the darker tone, something that could have been done due to Fraiser being able to have a darker tone on a sitcom.

Seattle would have been cool since it has quite a bit of rainy or at least cloudier weather. That could have really added to the atmosphere of the show. Something that's come to mind when reading through this thread is that no matter where in the world the show was set or what type of environment it was (city, town, rural), I would have really liked if their home was allowed to become a bit of a character itself. Even if it was set in LA since it was filmed there and most of the people working on the show lived in the area, I still would have wanted the city to become a larger part of the show. It really adds to the quality of it the same way that having an established family line added to it, or any other part of the show that made their lives seem more real. I love the idea of them living in San Francisco, but the feel of the city never really came through. I've watched a few shows that were filmed there, and the flavor of the show is completely different (and better) because of it. So no matter where they are, I would want their location to become a part of their story as much as possible.

I agree, any location where Charmed was featured should have played a huge role in the series, it makes zero sense why they would use the location shots for the show without actively making the city a character within itself.

I'm with you. I love shows that make the city the show is set in a character within itself. I really get the sense, it was just chosen for the location and city archive footage they had. They barely tapped into the culture of San Francisco. The show needed someone in the writers room or crew who lived in SF, and could really help with the history the culture. Or even made the trip to the city for research, wherever they set it.

But, I kinda guessed since I spotted quite a few locations that looked like LA and it had me confused. You could be right, Emmett. Maybe that's why they picked that location. They didn't do very many episodes where the city was apart of the show's culture. Apart from China Town, Alcatraz Island and the great Earthquakes of San Francisco.
I think it might've had to do with The WB not being as big of a network like CBS, NBC or ABC. Had it been on CBS, I'm sure that network would have big enough budget that they could've or would've been able to afford to film the show in San Francisco.
