Back in August of this year, Disney announced they would end physical media distribution in Australia (and possibly New Zealand). And, a few days ago Best Buy announced by 2024 they'll stop selling physical media. Will this be the end of physical media? As even OG Charmed is being sold on streaming services (with music changes), in today's world of technology. EDIT: Walmart will end its distribution of games mostly XBOX Games. Interesting slow fizzle.

My personal opinion is physical media should remain especially if streaming services can't get licenses for the original music. Plus, streaming services are only contracted for so long. For example, Netflix pretty much lost all of its cooler media such as a lot of Disney's content, OG Charmed, etc.
And, a streaming service media piece I bought is not available in my region, anymore. The way streaming services work is not great, whereas my physical copies, when I feel like watching it, it'll be there.

Wanted to add, Charmed's not the only one on streaming with music changes. Pretty much a lot of older shows have music changes. I never got into Dawson's Creek but decided to give it a chance on Hulu, and IK the intro song is not right LOL

After all it's a subscription and there's no telling if the content will ever be on there. They can remove anything at any moment. I love physical media because I own it and like having the original music. But since there's Vinyl made a comeback. Maybe even if it's phased out it'll come back. It may not be sold in stores but there's bound to be online companies selling physical media. There's still Shout Factory which tends to be the place to go for older stuff these days. Even if they cheaply produce the content. Shout! Factory, LLC is a leading multi-platform media company devoted to film and TV distribution, development, and production. Founded by Richard Foos, Bob Emmer, and Garson Foos in 2003, Shout! owns and manages a large portfolio of films, contemporary and classic TV series, animation, and documentaries.

Hopefully, DvDs and Blu-Rays will make a comeback similarly to Vinyl.

Hopefully, DvDs and Blu-Rays will make a comeback similarly to Vinyl. Yes I too love the convenience of Streaming. But you two are right you don't actually own it. In addition to music replacements. Sometimes things can be edited out of episodes of shows especially if they split a two part episode. Also Sabrina edited out an entire scene from an episode due to rights to a musical performance. It doesn't exist in the streaming version at all now. The Buffy remaster on streaming is terribly done. The entire style and the look of the show when it originally aired is totally ruined. Luckily despite the music replacements the Charmed streaming in HD is done with care. But another reason they should've just put the old SD versions and non wide-screen versions on streaming than the poorly done remaster. So there are pros and cons to streaming. But convenience and easy access seems to be what the majority prefer these days. Hopefully Blu Ray and DVD make a comeback like Vinyl.

the push toward "all digital" is disturbing. we've already seen the frustration that comes with paying for digital media, only to have the platform pull it & make it inaccessible, so where's the value for the money?
I value my large collection of dvd & blue rays, i have many of my fave shows, incl charmed, in my dvd/blu ray library, & knowing that I can watch them anytime I want, regardless of what these streaming services do, is a source of comfort.

Yeah, I agree. And streaming services the prices go up (at least where I am), despite the fact, that most of the library of content keeps getting lower. I mean Netflix should be way cheaper, it was the first streamer, but half the content is on other platforms now. It's not worth the value nowadays. I value my collection. I like to have something that is MINE and mine only. It's sad that convenience is winning out. Disney is slowly stopping physical media with DVDs and Blu-Rays. Which is sad, which means you're forced to watch their streamer, and hope the content isn't pulled at any given notice. I prefer physical media over streaming. Also I can only afford to pay for what I can. I don't think I could afford to pay for six-seven different streamers a month. I did nave Netflix before, but I cancelled my subscription. I tend to only pay month to month when there's something I really want to watch, then cancel my subscription the next month, once I've watched what I wanted. It's a waste to have it, when I'm only watching my large collection of DVD and Blu-Rays often.

hope the content isn't pulled at any given notice. Pretty much my problem with streaming services. I do like the convenience, but if they can remove it, at any time, despite me paying for it, I don't really think it's convenient, anymore. As I'm saying this, I have an ad, ATM, for Disney+, letting me know about the second season for Marvel's Loki LOL That's another thing, too! To watch some of these newers shows, you HAVE to have a certain streaming platform, in order to watch it, and I think that's garbage -_-

That would annoy the crap outta me. I'm just happy the shows I'm really into I own on physical media, so that will never be a problem for me.
I think its garbage how you HAVE to have certain streaming platform, in order to watch the streaming exclusive shows. But, I don't get the praise for streaming exclusive shows, they have a bad track record (if not worse) than cable or Network television. I constantly see streaming shows cancelled all the time after 1 or 2 seasons. They don't seem to really give shows as much of a chance like anything on television.

If you want to watch your favorite shows and movies there some websites I can recommend that you can watch for free. And risk getting a virus? I don't think so. Even so, it'll be in bad condition, most likely. Either the video or sound will be off. Besides, I don't mind paying to support the people who worked on each project. Besides, this is my point! Relying on SOME (as you so kindly put it) websites (free or not) make physical media obsolete, when the point most (not all) of us are making is we like physical media. And not having to be forced into the internet, to do it. It's not just movies and shows either. It's music and games, too. Even Weird Al picked up on this and is only doing Singles, now vs full on albums. Video Games is even worse. You don't even just straight up pay for a game, anymore. If you want extra goodies, you have to pay extra/more for it. You no longer buy a game and work towards unlocks, anymore. You straight up buy it. There are some (not all) exceptions, but that's my point! The discontinuing of physical media is effecting more than one area, here.

But I agree, I don't think it will be totally gone. They may be less likely to be sold in stores (Best Buy is stopping DVD sales). But I feel like you'll still always be able to find it through online stores.

You can legally buy digital copies of some shows and movies online through Itunes.

I don't think all physical media is gonna go by the wayside in the future. I'm glad you don't think so, but as summerreading said, Disney will no longer produce physical media of their product. In regards to games, when it pertains to Activablizz, things like certain World of Warcraft time periods or Overwatch 1 are no longer accessible, unless you play on private servers which aren't always ideal. Versus you can still play things like Mario Party 1, if you feel like it, on your original N64. 'Cause Nintendo didn't force you to upgrade. Unlike these other gaming companies, overriding what you originally bought.

Probably as a way to get more people to subscribe to their streaming service and the decrease in physical media sales due to streaming. Just my guess.

Did Disney ever give an explaination on why they are doing this to ya'll As summerreading said to get their streaming platform subscriptions up. I don't believe in less sales for physical media. They're even trying to promote park ticket sales and hotel stays for their Disney+ subscribers. It's all about what makes the most profit, which I don't want to fully dig deep into the Disney rabbit hole of problems. As other companies are equally doing this, as in trying to monopolize their movies, but I digress. Funny how you completely glossed over the video game portion which is a problem. I don't want something I paid for being overwritten with something I'm not interested in and not getting to play the version, I originally paid for because it's now the newer version.
