Easy, the sandworm wasn't actually using the powers just digesting them (Think of the sandworm like the Wasteland's version of a vaccuum cleaner, it's possible that it may even have collecting them for another demon or just cleaning up for the Elders or another power.)
Anyways it was never said that Cole got his powers from the sandworm, after all after he toasted it he was seen watching another demon burn up with its powers falling to the ground. This seems to indicate that he was going to gather powers from more falling demons than from the worm itself...

So, basically the sandworm was like a "cleaner" by taking away the powers of demons sent to the wasteland. My guess, then, is that the sandworm was the way in which the demons were, for the most part, prevented from escaping the wasteland. The sandworm takes the powers and the become a permanent fixture. If that's the case, then Cole's love for Phoebe is the only thing that kept him from being destroyed. He was in a survival mode in the hopes of returning to her. Is that right?

Cole even told Phoebe as much that the only reason he was able to stay alive rather than crashing and burning as worm food was that he was a demon with a soul, and that helped stop him from moving on...
Of course that doesn't explain how the Grimlocks, Barbas, or the Source among others also managed to return to the Earthly plane since as far as we know they didn't have a soul among them so they shouldn't have been able to cling to life and not burn up, go splat, and become worm chow (especially when Cole said he saw the Source be devoured, and no let's not go there...) Stupid show...

Cole was a demon with a soul, and that helped stop him from moving on... Of course that doesn't explain how Barbas also managed to return to the Earthly plane The only thing that I could ever explain for the Barbas returns is that Barbas is the physical form (or personification) of fear and since you can't totally eliminate your fears, Barbas keeps coming back.

What do you think happened to Cole after he got vanquished in Centennial Charmed?
Do you think that he remained an Avatar? Or that he was really alive but decided to stay away from Phoebe? Or maybe that he was a ghost?
What do you think?

I take it you missed the Season 7's The Seven Year Witch? You can watch it on Youtube.com (search for "Charmed 7x16" without the parentheses. There's one in 5 parts of decent quality there.) or just read the transcript for your answer. Although there is still some debate as to how much of the truth Cole was actually telling in that ep...

Perhaps they had souls, as well. I have never bought the BUFFY/CHARMED theory that evil vampires and demons are soulless. If they are sentient beings who can think for themselves and harbor any kind of emotions, they have souls, as far as I'm concerned.
You can argue that the series believes otherwise. Fine. They can. But I simply choose not to accept such thinking.

Stupid show... Well, Charmed was not well known for it's continuity. If you try to make every episode make sense, all you get is a big headache. By the way, the reason Cole went insane could be the combination of his new powers and Phoebe's rejection of him. Maybe he needed Phoebe as a focus to keep his powers from taking over and without PHoebe's trust, he just kinda lost it. It could be the Avatars as well. They love pushing people over the edge for their power. Look at what they did to Leo.

True, but Leo was good, thats why they tipped him, he didnt know what to do with all the stuff that was happening to him, but you would have thought that Cole would have... Being the worlds most powerful demon for a century, (next to the Source) you would have thought that he could handle all these new powers... As a huge Cole fan it was a shame for me to have to say goodbye to him, but their decision to bring him back for "seven year witch" was some good closure for his character, well it was for me anyway. It was touching to see that even then he still loved Phoebe with every bone... enough to want to help her to move on... And it was nice to see that when he was reciting poetry about her, they had a connection as she walked back and looked at where he was standing. To me, Phoebe and Cole will always have a connection, and I think that she would face a dilemma if Cole was to find some way back from that plain of existence and try to win her back...

I loved that moment when he was reciting Romeo and Juliet. It was so beautiful and touching and my heart was racing as she walked and looked at where he stood. It would have been great for her to see him but I know that the writers couldn't have real pheobe/Cole interaction for fear of opening up an old can of worms, the gesture was nice, a tribute to their love, how even on another plane, they can still feel each other's love and presence.
"What beauty. She doth teach the torches to burn bright"
Loved IT!

Youre right phoebecolefan that bit was beautiful, I mean, like you said she must still love him to feel his presence.. I still think that Cole should have returned for good... Maybe if the Elders had given Cole back to Phoebe instead of sending Coop, the she would have come to trust him again... That would have been a great story line!!

That would have been an amazing storyline! I never liked that Cole turned evil and Phobe didn't love him anymore, it was sad!
