No, she can't own the character, only her image.

From what I heard and read somewhere else. COntance gave her the right to Prue's character as well as image. Shannen also once said in aninterview that playing Prue was one of her favorite roles.

If Shannen completely owned the rights to Prue's character, then wouldn't they needed Shannen's permission to do the flashback scene from "Cat House"?

They were'nt allowed to show her though. Flash back episodes i think we're ok, but not showing the character...if that makes sense

theu didn't show her face not because Shannen owned the character but because Shannen owns Shannen's face. If they showed Prue, with Shannen's face, they had to pay her, the same as if they'd show a picture.

So if they had shown a big blobby ball of light and had the characters go, "Hi, Prue!" then THAT would have been legally acceptable?

Yup, pretty much. It's the reason why we don't see pictures of anyone that isn't a regular unless they appear in the episode. It's probably why we never saw Piper longingly looking at a picture of Leo when he was gone to the big freezer of destiny. It would've been the same as having Brian and there was no money for that. It's also why we only saw pictures of Grams around the house when she was appearing in the episode, or Chris and Wyatt, etc. You get the point.

Well, I'm afraid, drewsgal, that such a cavalier attitude towards budgets would get you fired immediately. Give credit where credit is due. The WB insisted on promotable hunks. The WB insisted on trimming the budget by demanding cutbacks. Kern had exhibited an uncanny knack for creatively integrating clip shows in order to save money: Cat House, Crimes and Witch Demeanors, etc. I, for one, am glad that Kern was able to scrimp and save in order to bring Brian Krause back for the final two episodes.

Amen. I hated the hunks of the week because they were completely meaningless without enough time to develop them, but I sure I'm glad we got to see Leo again at the end of the show. Ending the show with Piper without Leo just wasn't attractive to me (of course).

And, kudos to Brian Krause for being willing to return under those conditions. Here was an actor who certainly did not wish to leave the show, but was forced out. Yet, he still had the professional good sense and care for the show to come back under "difficult" conditions. He and Julian McMahon deserve honors for "giving" back to Charmed and its many, many fans.

That's because Brian genuinely loved the crew, and, I'm certain, the fans.

Why did Piper had to take over, following Prue's death? Because she would become the eldest?
What is this rule that the oldest sibling naturally has to be the one to take over? Look at THE GODFATHER Trilogy. The youngest brother turned out to be the one who was truly suited to take over his father's crime family. The oldest brother was too volatile and the middle brother was simply weak.
Why did Piper have to assume responsibility of the Charmed Ones? I really don't think she did a good job, if I must be honest. Despite the deaths of powerful demons, the sisters still ended up making more mistakes than they did when Prue was alive.

It seemed like felt responsible for her sisters being the oldest one now. Paige wasn't a viable option at that point, considering she was new at it and Phoebe didn't really seem very interesting in taking over. With Prue out of the equation (even with her alive) Piper was almost always the most responsible sister.Prue had three years to make mistakes, Piper had the rest of her life to do so.

Why would Piper feel that she had to be responsible for her sisters when she became the oldest? They ADULT WOMEN, not children. They weren't part of some Buffy-Dawn situation. By the way, Piper, Phoebe and Paige managed to make a lot of mistakes by the time Prue had been dead by three years.

Well, let's look at the alternatives.
Phoebe, who (at the time) had one active power that barely worked, and who was too preoccupied with romancing a demon.
Or Paige, who knew nothing about magic and probably would have orbed around San Francisco giving everyone magic face-lifts.
Piper, whether you like it or not, was the most grounded of the three at that point in time. And yes, because she was the oldest, she was also the most powerful (having two active powers, one of which allowed her to single-handedly vanquish many demons).

Two other factors play a role, I believe. First, Paige bonded almost immediately with Phoebe. In several respects, they were very similar: rebellious, adventurous, curious (with respect to magic), etc. Piper, on the other hand, was much more consumed by anger at the loss of Prue. By Hell Hath No Fury, Piper was leading the (reckless) pursuit of all things demonic in order to avenge Prue's death. Phoebe had Cole; Paige just had issues. By default, Piper took over. Finally, in Season 8, Piper "admitted" perhaps the real reason: she was the oldest. Of course, that was in an argument among her sisters and Billie, but I think the point is clear.
