I think all did their best what was given them at the time of the show, yet still actors won't like to be known for only one role, will they? It could end badly if that happens. They need to spread their wings, even if sometimes a movie comes out which is purely carbage!! C'est la vie!

Yeah, typecasting can really destroy a career. When you become identified with one role, it's hard for people to see you playing characters other than said role.

If you ask me, the best of the actors/actresses would have to be Shannen's performance with Prue. That woman is compelling in scenes where drama, most notably with tragic incidences, is at the forefront. When I think of Shannen at her peak in the series, it's during some of her most darkest moments like when she was took the empathic ability and confined herself to the basement as the flood of outward emotions from people across the city began to drive her insane. Other notable scenes where I thought her acting excelled took place when she's left to reconcile her grief and resentment with Death at the end of "Death takes a Halliwell", as well as the most obvious in "All Hell Breaks Loose" when Piper is shot and the desperation to save her sister drives Prue over the edge where she attacks anything or anyone standing in her way. It's like night and day compared to Rose's flat performance in the S6 finale when Phoebe is shot.
The only other actress who even comes close to Shannen for me is Holly, and I base that primarily around Piper's extreme outburst of emotions at the end of the third episode in S4 when she's in front of Prue's grave, hitting it furiously out of rage and grief over being left to maintain the family alone (she knew the responsibility of older sister would fall upon her shoulders) and leaving herself without her best friend too. I found Piper to be so grating and self-absorbed in later seasons that it damages my opinion of her. I know Holly was trying to work with what she had, but the characterisation is still weak compared to earlier seasons.

In terms of acting I always feel sorry for Rose, she's a terrific actress, and in Season 4 she showed that as well as she could, but from 5onwards the material got lighter and more comedic, and I think she was told to act "lighter" (if that makes sense) to reflect the change in direction for the show, and I don't think she did it well because she isn't good at pretending to be a lesser actress than she is. But Shannen for me is the best actor on the show HANDS DOWN, she was just perfect.

I can't agree with that. She was in Scream, which is a comedy and did fantastic. She just got bored which is why she mailed it in, which, like Fuller, is why I have no respect for her. This I agree with totally, along with Holly and Alyssa.

Yeah, pretty much, although I've heard that Holly was actually willing to do a Season 9 and 10 if she had to. But, Alyssa and ESPECIALLY Rose wanted out. The fact that neither of them cared enough to stick around to film the entire last episode proves it. If you ask me, the best of the actors/actresses would have to be Shannen's performance with Prue. That woman is compelling in scenes where drama, most notably with tragic incidences, is at the forefront. I know Holly was trying to work with what she had, but the characterisation is still weak compared to earlier seasons. I agree very much. It was hard to beat Shannen and Holly's performances, especially in the early seasons. They both knew how to do drama well (unlike Alyssa, who excelled in comedy), and they also took pride in their performances. Shannen even went so far as to speak up when she thought the material was subpar, although, sadly, it ended up costing her a job.

Yeah, the signs were there. I could just see the two of them mentally counting down the moments until the shooting of Forever Charmed ended.

It's why I have to give credit to both Holly and Alyssa - and Brian. Despite how horribly their characters were written, none of them ever gave less than their best. Ditto for Shannen and Julian, the reason why I'll always prefer the first set of Charmed Ones. I highly disagree with Alyssa and Brian. Alyssa clearly started phoning it in later on, and she was never a strong dramatic actor to begin with. And, Brian was never a strong actor, period. The limitations of his abilities painfully showed in Seasons 6 and 7 when he started getting more dramatic material (however horribly written it was). But mailing it in and not acting to the best of your abilities are two totally different things. I agree they're not as good of actors as Shannen and Holly, but unlike McGowan and Fuller, they didn't mail it in, but instead did their best, and hence they have my respect while Fuller and McGowan don't.

I don't know about Brian, but as far as the last two seasons go, I'd definitely say that Alyssa was mailing it in. Her performances were very tired, and she didn't even care enough to stick around long enough to film all of the last episode. She clearly wanted out ASAP. Alyssa was best when she was doing more comedic stuff and when she had both Shannen and Holly to work off of. She had many good scenes in the first 2 seasons.

Since it's been a *very* long time since I've watched any of S8 (not since the first time it was aired...) I think I'll just take your word for it.

It is interesting to note that, when Rose got good material for her character, in S4, she didn't mug and twitch so much. Draw your own conclusions.

That also happened to be her first season, back when she thought she was only going to be there for a year. She never could've guessed that she would end up spending half a decade on the show, and the stress ended up taking a psychological toll: From "Rose McGowan – Hollywood’s Queen of the Bump and Grind," Arena UK, July 1, 2007.

Yeah, I've read that myself. Rose clearly wanted out and no doubt cheered when she knew that Season Eight would be the end.
Notice that she hasn't starred on a television show since. She's taken guest roles (like when she was on Nip/Tuck), but never starring ones. Lesson learned.

Rose must be the only actor I've ever heard of that actually wanted their show to get the axe lol. If she really wanted to leave I think its weird she didn't just go, presumably they all had to sign on for season 8 since they thought 7 was the last and they had to take pay cuts, she could have just refused to sign. She could have saved us all lmao.

If only Rose HAD bolted after Season Four. We would have been spared the worst of Charmed.

Yeah, if Rose had refused to re-sign after season 4 I guess it would have ended at Witch Way Now. My only gripe with that would be that we wouldn't have gotten to see much of Paige, still they could have explored that with other media like books/comics.

No, she didn't have a chance to re-sign, because they wouldn't have only signed her for one year. Alyssa and Holly re-signed for another four years; Rose didn't. Her contract must've been for 5 years or I doubt if she would've returned.

Her contract must've been for 5 years or I doubt if she would've returned. I think I remember reading that it was. They signed Rose on for 5 years to cover both the last year of Holly and Alyssa's original contracts and the second 4 year contracts they would later sign. However, Rose never expected to actually finish out the entire 5 year contract, as nobody expected the show to last even close to that long without Shannen.
