Yeah, but the adult version of him was a popular character. I was afraid they would do to him what they did to Cole and find a contrived way to keep him around.
Back to irritating characters: the magic school kids from The legend of sleepy Halliwell. They SO did not belong in this show.

Magic school in general didn't belong on the show.

Amen! Magic school might not have been a character, but it was *very* irritating. It was *so* very much of a ripoff of Harry Potter, and after so many people grumbling about Charmed stealing stuff from Buffy and Angel, the last thing the show needed was to have it accused of ripping off another supernatural franchise. When all you can do is rip off other shows, it's time to call quits. I also hated magic school because it took away from The Book of Shadows. Up to that season, The Book was almost as much a part of the family as the sisters or Kit. After magic school turned up, the sisters would go there to research stuff rather than research The Book. When Leo died in the carcrash Vayos con Leos, did ANYONE really think that Piper wouldn't get him back? Or when she lost him AGAIN in Forever Charmed (she shouldn't have gotten him back the first time, since with both her and Billie surviving, the battle was a draw, but she just got him back so he could go time-travelling with her )? That's what I meant by dying becoming very, very boring on this show. You knew they'd be back. Even Chris. He came back in both S7 & S8, and as someone said, he came back as a baby--popular characters meant nothing to Kern if it didn't fit into his plot ideas. I would've prefered a season finale where we honestly were left wondering--did someone die or didn't they--like if we hadn't seen the sisters and Leo walking away from the explosion at the end of S7 or if we hadn't seen Piper and Billie survive at the end of Kill Billie, Vol 2. It makes for more suspense and more drama.

FF, Maracev, Esmeralda: Interesting discussion on several topics.
My 2 cents: Initially, I like how they introduced the Avatars, like in Centennial Charmed. They were not about good or evil, but they're solution would be considered evil (or very 1984ish) by many as it tampered with free will and the very basis of our emotional make up. Given, as we were told about 100 times, the Sisters powers are tied to their emotions, supressing them (or however you want to describe what they did), is a big no-no for TCO. Leo recognized this flaw in the Avatars plan, which led to them killing those who were highly emotional (created conflict). It is possible to also theorize that Zankou's use of the Paranoia crystal injected some of this emotional conflict into the equation.
However, the Avatars leave quietly, if reluctantly, to come back another day. So, that doesn't make them evil, just misguided as they don't really seem to understand what they are asking humanity to give up for utopia. Which brings up another shot at the whole utopia concept, but that's another thread.
I didn't find Dan irritating in his post boyfriend, out to expose Leo crusade. His character is supposed to have deeply cared about and really loved Piper. Unless you've loved someone like that and then been dumped (and didn't do anything to deserve it), then you can't really understand his motivation to stay in Piper's life, hoping to get her back by eliminating Leo (by showing he is not who he claims to be). It is frustrating to see Dan going through all this as Piper already knows what he find abut Leo and obviously a whole lot more. I think the writers/Kern were not sure, early on, who would wind up with Piper and depended a bit on how they saw audiences reacted. Then, when they decided to bring Leo back and have Piper come the conclusion that it is Leo she really wants to be with, they had to do something with Dan until they could figure out how to write him out of the show. This is just speculation, but the whole "who will Piper choose" storyline is not important to the overall season storyline. Meaning, if Piper had chosen Dan (as their Mother chose a normal mortal), then they still would have had magical children (just not with whitelighter powers). Leo would still be their whitelighter, but would either ask to be replaced or would have had to live with his rerequieted love for Piper. A Dan/Piper union (presuming he would then have to be told the "big secret", would have taken the show in a totally different direction. Just think how many stories/entire seasons revolved around the powerful magical child (and then children) of two powerful magical beings.
Magic School: Yes, an obvious HP ripoff, created soley to introduce the Gideon character. It could have been a one shot deal, to be mentioned here and there in later episodes, but it became a fixture in the show from then on. What makes it annoying is not Gideon, but why didn't it ever come up before. The only reason, besides the obvious, that I can think of, which stays within (mostly) the logic of the Charmedverse has to do with the deal the warlock made with their mother, to bind their powers so he wouldn't kill her and her two young children (Phoebe not born yet). Removing magic from them would eliminate the need to introduce magic school into the plot. HP already existed in 1998 when the show started, it just wasn't as popular yet. In fact, the first HP book had it's first US release in September 1998, the exact month and year Charmed began airing.
Anyway, Magic school was irritating; Dan, not so much; the Avatars, a little bit, but still produced some deeply seated (if only in our discussions) ideas about free will and paranoia.
The whole Brody thing did get wierd in that why didn't he back off from killing an Avatar once he knew they didn't kill his parents. Instead he is convinced by Zankou to help him stop their plan without really knowing what it was.
I know a long post, but I hope it gets read.

I'm finally getting around to replying to this one. I want to perhaps touch a little bit more on Magic School. Yes, it was a Harry Potter rip-off. But what is the difference between Harry Potter-inspired and Harry Potter rip-off? The difference would be that they would have offered something new for it.
I've always loved the idea of a school where they help people with powers train them ever since I became a fan of the X-Men. However, whenever you do something like that you have to do something new so it doesn't become a rip-off and then you have to make sure it's not cheesy.
The worst thing about Magic School was that it was out of continuity. If there had been a Magic School, the Original Power of Three would have gone there, even after Victor left Patty.
In general, characters (or things) that bring the Charmedverse out of continuity are really irritating.

FF: It would seem obvious they would have gone there, hence the discontinuity. However, as noted, and it's one of those storylines in the show which coincidentally explains the lack of magic school in their lives, they had their powers bound at a young age by their mother to protect them from the warlock. This not only, in the Charmedverse, keeps them off the radar of all sorts of demons and warlocks, but nicely explains why magic school was not in their lives as children.

Brody could be irritating as he was given this one track existence, to find the Avatars and avenge his parents death. Then, even when he is shown they were not responsible, he still helps Zankou screw up the Avatars plans and tries to kill one, resulting in his own death.

That is exactly why Brody annoyed me. Ant the other guy, I forget his name, but he was one of Paige's boyfriends. The one that says he is cursed with bad karma. He bugged me too.

Most of Pagie's boyfriends irritated me to be honest, they seemed to be either nut jobs or needy cases.
I enjoyed the idea behind Magic school, it being a place where people could learn how to safely use their Magic, I never thought it took away from the Book of Shadows. Magic school was just a step up from the learning you get at home in my opinion, it also brought a sense of familiarity to that part of the show something we all could relate to.
Overall I would have liked to see more of how each generation was taught their Witchcraft. I suppose Magic school did this for me.

Yeah! So you know what I'm talking about then. The only one of Paige's boyfriends I liked was Henry. And her best friend...I forget his name. He was sweet. Even though he learned about her being a witch, getting a spell get put on him, where he was able to stretch his arms, and almost get killed by a demon by removing his head. He didn't freak out. I liked him.

It's not like if I had to pick my favorite it would be Henry. I loved him, and I was happy that she ended up with the right guy.
