Saw this on another site and found it *very* interesting: Original Post: I'm not a fan of the introduction of new powers in season 2. But only because it seemed completely nonsensical and doesn't feel like a true progression of their individual magic.
I like to think of the Charmed Ones as Prue symbolizing the Body with the power to move physical objects, Phoebe the Mind due to the power of seeing the future and Piper the Spirit in the way she can freeze the flow of time.
I think Prue should have gained the power of Levitation as an extension of her Telekinesis power. In the sense that if she can move things with her mind why can't she with a little bit of concentration be able to levitate objects. It seems her Telekinesis which is channeled through anger is unstable resulting in it being a powerful force, that if she was to have a peaceful mind then she should move object with some grace. She should also like in Morality Bites be able to use a greater force of Telekinesis.
Then with Phoebe, I think she should have been the one to inherit Astral Projection instead of Prue. Since her power is like a psychic, then her progressed power should be psychic in nature. Due to being a Psychology student and having an interesting in things like meditate, she should have been able to learn how to separate her mind from her body. In the show she develops "Astral Premonition", so it would make sense if she knew Astral Projection.
And not only that, instead of developing her power of Empathy, she should have had the ability of Telepathy, the ability to read minds and emotion just without being able to mimic powers. Though reading minds could be a abuse of power, she should be only able to read minds when she touches someone, like how she gets Premonitions from touching something. It would also explain how in Morality Bites she kills a man by frying his brain, that it was her abusing her Telepathy powers by frying his mind. She should also have an ability to Sense Evil to complement Telepathy.
Then with Piper she should never have learned how to speed up Molecules through explosions. To me that is a demonic power, there is no difference from exploding things than there is of generating energy balls. Instead I think she should have gained the ability to freeze all of time like in Morality Bites. And in The Witch is Back where she could slow things into Slow Motion.
Her second power should have been the ability to walk through solid objects with the power of Intangibility, by reverberating molecules of herself and solid objects. Just like how she can stop a bullet from moving, she should be able to let a bullet go through her like a ghost (and like Shadowcat from X-Men).
And instead of exploding things and catching things on fire, she should be able to use Cryokinesis. Like how Prue's past self could in Pardon My Past. We have seen Piper literally freeze things when cooking and when turned Evil she turned a woman into an ice statue, that with some practice she should be able to freeze the air to a chill. Cryokinesis is a power that is in the line of the Power of Three, so it makes sense that it should manifest in one of them.
So to sum it up...
Prue - Telekinesis, Levitation
Phoebe - Premonition, Astral Projection, Telepathy, Sense Evil
Piper - Powers over Time, Cryokinesis, Intangibility
To me that set up is a bit more balanced than what happened on the show. It makes Prue the 'powerful' witch, Phoebe the 'detective' witch and Piper the 'resourceful' witch.
I'm interested in what people think of the Power Progression aspect of the show. What powers do you think Prue, Piper and Phoebe should have inherited alongside their original ones? Love this idea. I'd always get excited when the girls powers developed but then Paige came along and screwed that all up. Also, Piper's explosion power was just too powerful and took out the thrill in demon vanquishes.
I liked how Phoebe became an empath because it does tie in with her power of the sixth sense. I would of liked Piper to have more control of time, like reverse time or reverse molecule breakage or however you describe her power.
Paige had too many powers and it just felt like she can do anything and it took out the thrill of individualised powers. She should of had normal telekinesis and the ability to orb and that's it.
Second Reply: I totally agree that Prue should've gotten Levitation and Phoebe should've received Astral Projection. You hit the nail on the head especially when mentioning that Phoebe did in fact have an "astral premonition" in "The Eyes Have It" in s5. Plus Prue had already seemed to be able to elevate herself really high when she went Matrix on the demon who cursed her with Empathy.
I don't know about Phoebe being able to develop Telepathy. Although it might've made sense, the writers would've had to take great care to not let her power spoil the element of surprise for viewers. She wouldn't have been able to know everything or else that would've upped the scales too high in favor of the Charmed Ones. This is perhaps why Phoebe's power of premonition never grew TOO strong, like Kira's or the Seer's - not too exciting to have a witch who always knows when an attack is coming.
As for Piper - I like that her powers grew in strength because her personality hardened and she became a tougher person. I don't think her Molecular Combustion power took the thrill out of the show. Over time, the witches did get stronger, true, but so did the intensity of the attempts on their lives. They needed more firepower to combat evil. We all know Piper wasn't able to vanquish EVERY demon, just the low and mid level interlopers who were dumb enough to teleport into the house.
Plus, even with Piper's enhanced power of exploding things, it was only as good as her offensive and defensive reflexes and abilities. Anytime one of the sisters is separated from the collective, she's highly vulnerable. I agree with the first two much more than the third one, but I'm curious to see what you guys think before I post my own reactions. |

I think that if the writers had given CO's powers that way we were here dicussing about how wrong it was, how it'ld be better if Prue gained Astral Projection and Phoebe Levitation and Piper'ld Molecular combustion
It's difficult to give birth to an original idea more easy to pick at it

To be fair, while your right, the suggestions above make more logical sense. AP kind of makes sense for Prue but would of applied better to Phoebe for example.
I don't think the writers got those advancements drastically wrong but Piper's moleculur combustion was a bad move. It was given to her cause Prue was leaving and the sisters needed more fire power - that's a bad plot device. Which is awful writing. The sisters weren't weak, had Paige been able to develop Prue's TK as well as her own strand, there wouldn't of been any need for Piper's MC.

I fully agree with this. However, I don't think they made it clear which demons Piper could or couldn't blow up. Sometimes she could blow up demons who accumulated a lot of power, and a clear line wasn't set.

I fully agree with this. However, I don't think they made it clear which demons Piper could or couldn't blow up. Sometimes she could blow up demons who accumulated a lot of power, and a clear line wasn't set. *nods* I agree. Had she only been able to blow up the pesky lower-level ones, that would've been fine, but when she could also blow up the higher-level ones, that's when her power got irrirtating. Although I would've preferred the powers something like what's described in the OP. Oh, yes, hindsight is definitely 20/20, but that's part of the fun of message boards - now that we've seen the show and had a chance to think of how it could've done better, it's fun to discuss. What I liked best about the OP was the idea of the Power of Three joining Body, Mind and Spirit (which we all have), leading to Prue the 'powerful' witch, Phoebe the 'detective' witch and Piper the 'resourceful' witch. |

Orbing teleportation - a given Healing - a given, they're angels Empathy - a given, they're angels Omnilingualism - they have international charges; this is necessary Sensing - they have charges who engage in combat with demons and other forces of darkness, this is necessary Cloaking - the fact that their charges openly deal with evil makes this power necessary Hovering - they're angelic; it goes hand-in-hand with their defensive/passive nature Glamouring - the ability to cast an illusion of appearance around oneself goes hand-in-hand with the capabilities of angels in fiction and religion Photokinesis - manipulating light; another given, it goes hand-in-hand with their imagery as guardians for the forces of Good magic The only non-necessary power I saw them having was Thermokinesis. But we saw that about twice in the entire series used by a Whitelighter, so it's fair to say that Whitelighters don't have that ability across the board and is another one of those Connie Burge-era blunders.  |

I never thought that Paige had too many powers, either. The only one she used regularly towards the end of the show was Glamouring, and that's innately from her White-lighter side. It's a shame we never saw her witch-powers advance.
EDIT:
And while those reassigned powers might have seemed better in terms of the Mind, Body and Spirit concept, I don't think they'd work so well for the sisters. I'm glad Piper got an offensive power. To me, Phoebe's Levitation stemmed from her martial-arts training, her own natural ability supported by magical power - seems fine to me. Her empathy was perfect too, as that also stems from her psyche.
I mean, what would Phoebe have DONE with Astral Projection? Prue was trying to learn how to use Telekinesis while projected which would have made her very powerful. Phoebe? Not so much.

Considering that orbing is basically a form of teleportation, I don't see how there could be a power called telekinetic orbing. Both telekinesis and teleportation is the moving of an object with one's mind. In the case of each ability, it is done in a different way.

The reason why I hate those fancy names and why I'm glad that Charmed never used any of them on the shows and Paul Ruditis won't use them in the comics. |

Prue and Paige could move things with their minds. Piper couldn't freeze time, instead she could either make molecules slow down or speed up. Phoebe could see the future and feel others' emotions and raise up (with the last two totally Jump-the-Shark). Whitelighters having so many powers made sense because they would have the powers needed to help their charges (see the way Leo used his during Season One - Connie was the first to screw his up during Season Two since you never saw him doing any of those things and then Kern made it worse the rest of the way, turning whitelighters into cosmic doctors and taxicabs.) Their children should not have inherited any of these powers because they themselves were not whitelighters. Paige should've just been able to move things with her mind, one of Kern's many screwups in trying to make things "fresh" by making them different. As soon as that's your reason for doing stuff, it's time to call quits! |

At the time he was faced with a dilemma, having just fired one actress he had to create a new character to keep the series going. The fans wouldn't of been satasfied with just the three seasons, he had to atleast make one or two before he could close the book. He had to go in a slightly different direction with Paige's character. Had she just had telekinesis, it would of upset a number of fans as it would of just been like literally replacing Prue. Switching things up a little, meant that she wasn't just a carbon copy of Prue, which the show itself dealt with - Paige isn't Prue and she wasn't any worse because of it. Paige stood firm on her own merits. Arguably he was later guilty of trying to keep things fresh and I agree he should of then called it quits. But at that moment in time, I think he was just trying to make the best of a tricky situation. |

They would even if she had just been a witch with Prue's power and not Super Witch with both witch and whitelighter powers, which immediately took away what a whitelighter was - a reward for a good life. That was as bad as trying to make her the baby of the family when she was anything but. She was *not* the baby and she was *not* a whitelighter. No, he totally blew it by doing that. |

Someone had suggested that the WB may have prevented him from ending the series earlier. I have heard that the FOX Network had prevented Chris Carter from ending "X-FILES" earlier than it did.

Hmm... I would have made all the sisters have power progressions that stuck in the area related to their Warren power.
I would have stuck with mind movement for Prue AND Paige.
Telekinesis - propelling objects with her mind
Astral projection - moving her (astral) body with her mind
Teleportation - instantaneously moving objects with her mind
I would have stuck with time manipulation for Piper.
Freezing time - stopping time in small pocket areas
Reversing time - rewinding time in small pocket areas (however, this would initially be limited to 5 - 10 minutes of moving time backwards, just like her freezes only hold for so long)
Self-acceleration - manipulate her own pocket of time, which allows her to move at super-human speeds.
I would have stuck with seeing the future or seeing beyond the normal senses for Phoebe.
Premonition - the ability to perceive the future.
Empathy - the ability to perceive the emotions of others.
Dream walking - the ability to enter and perceive the dreams of other people (basically a less developed talent of mind reading).

I would have NEVER given astral projection to Prue or Paige. I do not see how that ability related to telekinesis or teleportation. I simply don't.

Hmm, this is what I would have chosen:
Prue:
Telekinesis
Levitation
I don't see the need for Prue to have more powers, as an example, she could've developed levitation halfway through Season 2 instead of Astral Projection. Combined with her sudden martial arts abilities and it would have been perfect.
Piper:
Molecular Immobilization
Molecular Dispersion (The dispersion of molecules, however a weak form, more defensive.)
Invisibility
Projective Invisibility (The ability to make other people and objects invisible)
Unlike many people on here, I believe that Piper's powers working on a molecular level made more sense than the 'freezing time' explanation. Throughout the show, if you froze time in once certain place then wouldn't that little pocket be out of sync with the rest of the world? It never added up for me. So I would give her her freezing power, and then instead of Molecular Combustion, I would give her Molecular Dispersion, which is a different thing entirely. It would be like as an example when in the series she 'blew up' the Source, and he just became floating molecules, and then reformed. It would be more like that, although she could kill lower-level demons with it, it would be used more defensively, as in she would disperse a demon, then it would give her long enough to run or for Prue/Paige to get ready to send him flying. Invisibility and Projective Invisibility I could imagine her developing around Season 7, triggered by the want to not be seen. After learning to control the power, she could then make whatever she was touching at the time invisible and eventually turn other things/people invisible with a hand gesture.
Phoebe:
Premonition (Past and Future, gradually improves over the seasons)
Empathy
Telepathy
I would like to keep Phoebe's powers passive, in effect anyway. Her premonitions would stay relatively the same and she would develop Empathy in Season Four, after Prue's death, which is also what inspires her to become a columnist. She can feel emotions and then sense if somebody is a demon, and also sense their next attack. When it gets more developed, she can channel good emotions into demons/warlocks leaving them temporarily stunned, or at a push turning on their counterparts. Telepathy would mostly be a huge advancement to her Empathy power, I would imagine Phoebe would acquire telepathy in Season Six. She could hear thoughts and project her own into other people's minds, sending a false premonition for example, she could also channel other peoples powers with Telepathy, although she has to touch the person she wishes to use this power on.
Paige:
Telekinetic Orbing
Telekinesis
Orbing
Glamouring
Healing
Sensing
I like Paige being a hybrid. Her powers wouldn't change that much from the series tbh until about Season 7, when her Telekinetic Orbing power gradually becomes more like Telekinesis. By that I mean that she learns to control her power non-verbally at will and eventually, when she moves things, there will be less and less orbs covering it as the Season progresses until she effectively has telekinesis. However, she would use her Telekinetic Orbing power, just like Wyatt and Chris alternate between the two.
