This is a little off-topic, but do you think that fandom opinions of the show have changed over time? For example, Chris and Wyatt used to be very popular and well-liked characters. There was an entire spinoff movement dedicated to them, and a large number of fans felt like they had saved the later seasons. A lot of people even outright hated Seasons 7 and 8 simply because of how the Chris and Wyatt story had been dropped without any real resolution. Nowadays, though, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who's a huge fan of the characters. The spinoff movement is dead and buried, every Charmed Sons fansite having since closed. You're much more likely to find criticism of the characters than praise, with many even claiming that Chris nearly killed the show in Season 6. Similar seems to happened to Piper and Cole. Both were also hugely popular and well-loved among the fandom 10 years ago, but nowadays it seems like you see more criticism for them than praise (with many even going so far as to claim that Cole was the first time the show Jumped the Shark). On the flip-side, fandom opinion seems to have softened on Billie over the years. While she's still widely regarded as a Mary Sue, she's seen much more as a victim of bad writing and poor casting nowadays, rather than the Source of All Evil that the fans regarded her as back when Season 8 was airing. Nowadays, it's the poor characterization of the sisters (especially Piper and Phoebe) that people hate the most about Season 8. What do you think? Did you feel differently about the show back when it was still airing? Have later rewatches changed your opinions? That's a very interesting question: I tend to think that people's opinions change as they rewatch series. People tend to be more critical and aware of flaws during a re-watch. But for me, the way I feel towards certain characters hasn't changed at all: I could never stand Chris or Wyatt, and I've always loved Billie and Cole. However, my opinion of Piper has changed, but that was as the show progressed: in the first seasons she was my favorite character, but starting from Season 5 onwards I could no longer stand her. Still can't.

Yeah, I was part of the TCS Campaign. In fact, a few people I know here, Betty, Jana, and Storygirl among them, were also part of it, that's where I first met these ladies.
It's a damned shame that Destined shut down. It was a good site and show what a good TCS spin-off might have been like. Some of Shannon's stories can be found at FanFiction.net, but unfortunately, none of Jennifer's are there.
There is a certain member here, whom I won't name, who seems to have made Cole their favourite whipping boy. I guess this person got tired of bashing Chris all the time.
As I have said, it was Obscuras Lupa's review that turned me around on Billie. While the Charmed Ones wanted to go shopping and have sex, she was always trying to remind them of their duties to protect Innocents. And she kept getting "Shut up, Billie!" for her troubles.
Kaley Couco did the best she could, but the bad writing screwed her over. I'm glad she's gone on to better things. Heck, of all the former Charmed cast, she's the one that has had the most success. Ironic, isn't it.

Still can't. I can definitely see how a show can appear differently with the faster pace of a rewatch as opposed to the slower pace of a first airing. You tend to notice the finer details when you watch whole seasons in a quick succession instead of spaced out over several months. It's entirely possible that things like the change in Piper's character or how Cole altered the dynamics of the show became more readily apparent in rewatches than during the first airings. People are now going into the later seasons with the earlier seasons far fresher in memory than they were when the episodes were still airing. I can definitely say that time has softened my opinion of Billie, that's for sure. I used to despise her character for stealing the spotlight from the Charmed Ones (as well as the spinoff opportunity that should've gone to Piper's sons), but revisiting Season 8 years later made me realize that she was probably the least of that season's problems. As much as people called her things like "Swillie the Teenage Skank," she wasn't the character who was abandoning innocents to go shopping and date around. Plus, I also noticed how horribly rushed the latter part of the season was (something you can pretty much only pick up on a rewatch) and how Billie and Christy were left without any real closure. I now mostly see her as a character that had potential, but was let down by bad writing and poor casting.

Should've never backed down on him being a Sith Lord, George. Amen. That would've been like finding out that the true Source was Jenny! Although speaking of Star Wars, I truly don't think Charmed has a chance at a reboot - I'm afraid it would be too much like what happened with the prequels when it was all about the special effects (I slept through most of the last two movies) and nothing about the story. I'd be afraid the reboot would also be all about three demon-hunters who happen to be related rather than three sisters who happen to be witches. And because how screwed up the last few seasons are, if they tried to do something like The Force Awakens, we'd just have all of the same problems as those last few seasons - all about the powers and which guy they're going to screw next and not much else. Ditto if they tried to do something like what Abrams did with Star Trek. That would be truly be Chamed's best chance at a real comeback, but I can't see the networks not making the same mistake - turning them right away into demon hunters who happen to be related and not sisters who happen to be witches. I am fully convinced that Charmed is like a mine for people writing fan fic because it's full of ideas never developed, doable plots, characters with a lot of potential abandoned or misused That to me is probably the reason the criticism here at the Cafe, as disturbingly prevalent as it seems at times, isn't unhealthy to me. Because it's not just people saying "You suck," it's people saying "Here's what went wrong and here's what could've been done," imagining how the franchise could've stayed above water, having a discussion, coming up with ideas, ACTUALLY THINKING. And if you look at where a lot of the criticisms and even some of the disagreements amongst the criticisms are coming from, it's possible for someone to come [/in and in turn analyze us and what we're saying outside the context of the Charmed brand and come away with some new insight about trends in fan perspective, creative media, pop culture, etc. I'm not saying it'll lead to some breakthrough moment in society or something, but it's good to encourage free thought even if it's on such a transient level as picking through some television show that aired around the turn of the millennium and fizzled out over time. I've been saying that since S6. The only good thing about all of the screw-ups is all the fantastic fanfics that were inspired by those screw-ups. I truly think that if the last five seasons had been as good as the first three, we would've all gone on to a different fandom by this point - and that would be the right time for a reboot that would have a true chance to succeed. Unfortunately, it's too late for anything but fans' virtual series and fanfics.

However, my opinion of Piper has changed, but that was as the show progressed: in the first seasons she was my favorite character, but starting from Season 5 onwards I could no longer stand her. Still can't. I think most (not all but most) of the Charmed Sons fans have admitted that the spin-off was something that the networks simply didn't want, knowing that Ramsey and Fuller would not have been able to carry a series (instead the network found two actors who could and are doing Supernatural) while getting rid of the problems of S6-8, and those fans have gone on to other fandoms. There's a few left, but the more people rewatch Charmed, the more they're no longer interested in them. Ditto for some of the other characters. Comparing S8 Piper and S8 Phoebe, even S8 Leo with S1 Piper and S1 Phoebe and S1 Leo showed fans just how badly they'd been screwed up. I admit the first time I watched the series, I loved Phoebe and Piper all the way to S6, just like I loved Cole all the way to S5. But after one or two re-watches, I couldn't stand Phoebe starting with "Sleuthing with the Enemy" and Piper starting with "Oh, My Goddess!" and Cole starting with "Charmed and Dangerous" when I realized that he was never possessed (and I checked "The Book of Three", the "official" companion of Charmed - the word possessed and essence is *never* used when talking about Cole - it's always the powers influencing him and him accepting them, never possessed by the essence). I'll stick to the way they're written in fanfics when the changes make sense.

It's now possible to watch Season One and Season Eight back-to-back, something that couldn't be done during the run of the show. The way the characters deteriorated now just jumps out at you.

Very much so. The poor writing and change of tone in the later seasons becomes far more apparent during rewatches than it was when the show first aired. You catch so much more when you're not watching episodes weeks and months apart.

Nowadays, it's the poor characterization of the sisters (especially Piper and Phoebe) that people hate the most about Season 8. What do you think? Did you feel differently about the show back when it was still airing? Have later rewatches changed your opinions? Some of my views have definitely changed over the years. Originally, Piper was my favourite all the way through. These days, she's only my favourite in season 1. Still like her most of the time in s2. Think she's okay for most of s3, 4 and 5. After that, I can't stand her. Still love Holly and think she's an underrated actress, but I have far less patience for the character. My dislike for Phoebe is more or less the same really, perhaps exacerbated a bit by re-watching without a week in between episodes. Although looking back, I'm surprised I didn't dislike her sooner actually. When season 5 and 6 aired, I mostly just found her irritating, bored of her column and her love life, but it wasn't really until season 7 that I started disliking her so much. Whereas now, I'd consider many of her worst s5 and 6 moments as her lowest points in the series. I feel pretty much the same about Prue and Paige. Prue was overly harsh at first, but I really grew to like her and was sad to see her go. Paige was great in season 4, but then the writers just stopped caring... until they eventually decided that she should get married before the finale, so were finally forced to spend a bit of time actually developing something for her. I have softened towards Billie for sure. I'm not a Billie fan; I still think she's a poorly written, two-dimensional character, awkwardly forced into the manor; but at least she gives a hoot about people. We'll have to see if my opinion on her changes when we get into the Christy/ultimate power stuff. Billie will be getting her projection power in the next ep I review, so it can't be far off. Cole, again, still feel more or less the same. Enjoyed him in s3 and 4, but then s5 happened. He was never the biggest draw of the show for me, but I generally found him interesting to watch. Season 5 just turned him into a bad joke that someone retells over and over and over again, despite nobody laughing in the first place. I do find my opinions tend to change when I rewatch years later. Sorry to bring things back to Buffy; but I did a rewatch not long a go and that was similar. I had far less patience for some characters I used to consider favourites, while I found myself appreciating other characters much more than I did originally. Then there are shows like Charmed, where my opinions change for the worse as the series goes on, but I carry on watching because of how much I loved it initially. Once Upon a Time has gone that way. If most of the characters were killed off at this point, I'm not sure I'd care... but I continue with it; partly because I used to love it so much and partly because I guess I'm naively hoping that it'll get back on track eventually.

Originally, Piper was my favourite all the way through. These days, she's only my favourite in season 1. Still like her in s2 and 3. Think she's okay for most of s4 and 5. After that, I can't stand her. Still love Holly and think she's an underrated actress, but I have far less patience for the character. Yeah, Piper's definitely soured on me over the years, too. It seems that her decline as a character really didn't become noticeable until later rewatches, which I think many people here can probably attest to. Definitely a far cry from 10 years ago, when she seemed to be the universal "favorite sister" of 95% of the fans. (Nowadays, either Prue or Paige fills that role.) My dislike for Phoebe is more or less the same really, perhaps exacerbated a bit by re-watching without a week in between episodes. While I've always disliked later Phoebe, I used to consider Season 5 the turning point for her character. However, rewatching the series made me realize that her turning point was actually Season 3, with the way she started obsessing over Cole and prioritizing him over her sisters and Charmed duties. Season 5 may have been the start of "Freebie," but "PhoeME" goes back much further than that. In fact, rewatching the series made me realize that Season 3, in general, was a turning point for the show in many not-so-good ways. That was when the show started to become more action-oriented and focused on hunting demons over protecting innocents. You could already see demons starting to replace warlocks as the main bad guys, and demons were no longer the "Demon of _____" as they had been in the first two seasons. This was also the season where Piper's decline into "Miss Whinealot" began, starting with her marriage to Leo and accelerating after Prue's death. And, that's not even mentioning "All Hell Breaks Loose." Used to consider it one of the show's all-time greatest episodes, but nowadays, I see it as a rather rushed, sloppily-written episode that probably would've been forgotten had it not been Prue's last appearance. I consider "Deja Vu All Over Again," "Witch Way Now," and "Something Wicca This Way Goes" to all be much stronger finales. I used to rank Season 3 higher than Season 2, but nowadays, I'd probably rank Season 2 higher. Get past Jenny and the love triangle (and some of the awkward early episodes), and you have a solid, very rewatchable season that still sticks to the show's core premise.

Of course, S3 was the season in which Kern seized power. Constance Burge, while still there, no longer had any creative control. Interesting.
And it's also interesting to note that many feel that Piper and Phoebe's characters really began to deteriorate after Holly and Alyssa became Producers (jobs which neither of them had earned, IMO). Draw your own conclusions, folks.

Yeah, Kern's influence started to be felt pretty early on. I think the darker, more action-oriented show that Charmed was in Seasons 3 and 4 (and Season 7, to a lesser extent) was what Kern ultimately wanted the show to be. I feel like the skimpy costumes and fairytale crap from later seasons were more WB than Kern (although Kern didn't exactly say no to them).

Of course I disagree with most of you
There is no tv series in which in every season most of the episodes is worth to be reviewed, even my beloved STNG, which also boasts one of the most beautiful final with "All Good Things"has weak seasons and unsatisfactory episodes
The seasons of Charmed of which I watch few episodes are season 2, 7 and 8, of which I really appreciate Kill Bill Vol 2, Something Wicca This Way Goes and Chick Flick: I look at what I like, my profession is not the television critic and I haven't that much time to spare
If I have to evaluate Charmed characters in their evolution, I appreciate them much more ever since the series is over and I could get an overall picture As in The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure For Writers,a textbook by Christopher Vogler, Charmed follows the typical structure: an extraordinary event breaks into normal lives, (The Call to Adventure)there are initial uncertainties, difficulties, then the story unfolds, loves and friendships born, enemies come along, there is a period of fear and rebellion, the protagonists face the greatest challenge and experience death and rebirth Their own personality change and then there is the return to the ordinar world, after choosing whether to return to their world or to carry on to an ultimate destination: at this point, they are very different people, not always more suitable
Charmed follows this structure, the writers'ld do better, ok, anyway it's in the classical parameters and the protagonists have changed
The fresh, bright, young Phoebe, joyful witch, has a wonderful growth as woman until she allows herself to fall in love: the drama with Cole turns Phoebe into a introverted, scared, unenthusiastic woman, exactly the opposite of what she was She'll find her balance slowly through the friendship of people like Drake and Billie, I don't like her but I have to admit that she was able to revitalize Phoebe
Piper is the classic next door girl, shy and insecure, but full of love and wisdom, if she didn't have a good sense of humor, she'ld be characterless: her older sister's death, a lot of family responsibilities - economic and of safety- the concern for her sons turn Piper in a determined woman, sometimes aggressive, sometimes wry, while maintaining and even developing a strong maternal instinct that pour on the whole family, friends included Piper is a constant contradiction, difficult to predict her reactions, the opposite of reliable middle sister that she was
Prue dies soon but her character was acquiring the features of a leader, she was becoming more determined, even more free from her sense of duty as older sister
Paige is a problem, she is a character who swings between Prue's grit and Phoebe's lightheartedness, she is not at ease in her various works, nor as a social worker nor as a teacher, maybe she is an artist: thrown into the magical world suddenly, turned into the baby sister suddenly, she'ld have to be "the girl who flees"the one who rebels against her new role and slowly accept to give up on her world I like Paige, she is a nice and sensitive character, but it would have been better if they had also given her a chance of development
I feel as Nathan about Once Upon a Time, I actually stopped watching I failed to get attached to the characters, I liked only Hook, all the others were too stereotyped and especially Emma, I wasn't able to like her

I'm beginning to think that it would have been better for Charmed had it been cancelled after Season Two. This would have been before the decline started.
I mean look at shows that have had short runs, like My So Called Life and Firefly. Both these shows continue to have many fans, they leave Charmed in the dust.
If Charmed had been cancelled after S2, we might all be here lamenting the demise of a great show, rather than poking fun at the pathetic joke it had become by the end.

I've definitely grown to like Piper and Phoebe less and appreciate Prue and Paige more. I think one's opinions just change naturally as you get older, so certain traits of Piper's and Phoebe's that I once found funny now get on my nerves a bit. Particularly now that I am doing my mini-marathon, I've noticed just how pointless Phoebe really is post Season 4; not only does she barely use her powers but she's just an annoying women in general. For example, in 'Valhalley of the Dolls', which I've just watched, she calls the restaurant to essentially stand up that DJ that asked her out, but then gets angry because her beat her to the punch. According to PhoeME, he 'stood her up' because he called the restaurant and not her. Fair enough, I agree... but was she not just about to do the same thing? If she was already late for the date and about to call him/the restaurant to tell them she's not coming, she HAS stood him up already, no? That's just one example of how stupid the writing became on the show. Maybe at one point I did find that scenario funny, but now I just think, 'If I met you in real life, you would really do my head in!' In terms of the seasons, I really can't stand Season 6. I'm not 100% sure why but I think it must be because of factors such as my example above. That and the combination of too many negative/disagreeable factors makes me wish I could skip the whole season i.e. Paige's yellow hair; Phoebe's crap pixie cut; the sisters not looking or acting like sisters anymore; Leo abandoning his family and then hanging around the house anyway; protecting King Wyatt; hired-for-his-looks Drew and his whining voice; Phoebe and Spencer Ricks; exploding power and potions-throwing galore; Phoebe's bag of tricks empathy; premonitions go missing; Phoebe loses her powers; Magic School; Gideon, the moustache-twirling baddie. I could go on and on and bore everyone into a coma... Conversely, my perception of S5 has changed quite a lot. I used to think that it was just as awful as S6, but when you cut out the fairytale episodes from S5 it actually isn't half bad. It's not the season I wanted, but it's a nice, lighter fare, reminscent of S2. Had they used a different finale to 'Oh My Goddess', I would've happily made that the last season. I think when I next do a marathon I'll stop at 'The Day the Magic Died' (hooray, no bloody Jason Dean to contend with) or even 'Necromancing the Stone'. The only problem is I still like S7 and don't mind S8, so would like to find a way in which I could just bypass S6, open to suggestions...

Of course, it was Chris's story that was the driving force behind S6, it was this that kept the fans coming back.
Remove Chris from the equation and the season would have been a complete failure.

The main story of Season 6, the Wyatt/Chris story, is never brought up again afterwards (to the chagrin of TCS fans, although it works in your advantage), and the only parts that are relevant get shown in flashbacks. I've just finished 'Oh My Goddess' and 'Valhalley of the Doll' so at this point in my marathon Leo is suspicious of Chris because of he thinks (quite rightly) that he banished him to Valhalla. So if I now just jump to Season 7, at which point Leo is looking to avenge Chris by killing Barbas, it should work, right? It'll hopefully just come across as a time jump (like the one between 'The Courtship of Wyatt's Father' and 'Spin City') and so throughout S7 we will learn that Chris was actually Piper and Leo's son and that Leo killed an Elder called Gideon. I mean, it's not like any other part of S6 is ever mentioned again anyway (namely Richard). Of course, it was Chris's story that was the driving force behind S6, it was this that kept the fans coming back. Remove Chris from the equation and the season would have been a complete failure. Perhaps I could in a few Chris-centric episodes, such as 'Chris-Crossed' and 'The Courtship if Wyatt's Father' which I did enjoy as a sort of anchor. Perhaps they could be like the Star Wars prequel eps I know these seems like an awful lot of effort for a stupid re-watch but I want it to make some sort of sense, if you know what I mean. Do either of you remember why Gideon was revealed to be "Evil" by any chance? I basically just want enough essential material from S6 without having to suffer that dreadful finale.

Last summer, as every summer, sky tv has planned Charmed, every season, I took the opportunity to download and rewatch them So I discovered that Charmed is one of the few series that I rewatch willingly, for many reasons: the dialogues, never ordinary, for many of the plots and subplots, original and interesting, for affection Seeing that I feel the sisters as old friends, from which I'ld never expect perfection, I also accept the Seven Dwarfs, as I accepted the world of Oz in Supernatural, a serie by now increasingly tired But with Elsa0s arrival in Once Upon a Time I definitely gave up on the series and it was only a matter of time, the protagonists wasn't able to arouse any emotion Season 5 is light and pleasing and, IMO, also season 6 is likeable I don't care of the sisters's color or hair cut, the conversation between Phoebe and Paige at the start of Valhalley of the Dolls is needed to upset Chris Chris lost mother and aunts since eight years,he has their reverential memory typical of the teens, he certainly thought, going back in time, to see his mother and aunts as the forty-year-old who he remembers, not girls chatting of their dates Phoebe: Huh! He stood me up. Chris: Wait, weren't you just calling to cancel on him? Phoebe: Yeah, but I called him. That's cancelling. He called the restaurant. That's standing up. (Paige nods in agreement. Chris's puzzled and bewildered face is funny, a pefect Marti McFly effect if you look at the season 6 with Chris eyes, you'll see a nice season The identification process matters a lot then : last summer, my husband worked with archaeological groups who were trying to save what they could from the border with Syria, it happened I cannot have news for days While I was watching a few episodes from season six, alone on the couch with the baby monitor, I got along a lot with Piper alone with her baby

It'll hopefully just come across a a time jump (like the one between 'The Courtship of Wyatt's Father' and 'Spin City') and so throughout S7 we will learn that Chris was actually Piper and Leo's son and that Leo killed an Elder called Gideon. I mean, it's not like any other part of S6 is ever mentioned again away (namely Richard). That could work. Again, I remember most of the important bits getting shown in flashbacks in Season 7, and there's the appearances of Chris and Wyatt in "Someone to Witch Over Me" and "Imaginary Friends," respectively. You could also just watch the important Chris-centric episodes like "Chris-Crossed" and "The Courtship of Wyatt's Father" before moving onto Season 7. There really isn't any need to watch garbage filler like "Witchstock," "Prince Charmed," and "Used Karma."

Yeah, very true. Actually now that you bring it up, it's quite amazing how little Chris is mentioned in S7 - figures, I suppose, the sisters are almost entirely self-obsessed by this point in the show. If only I could figure out a away to cut out that stupid Leslie/Nick Lachey... goodbye 'Bare Witch Project' and 'Cheaper by the Coven'. Was just thinking that myself. I think you only really need the bare essentials to get an idea of what happens in S6 anyway (aka 'Wyatt and Chris: Origins'). Haha! God, I despise those episodes, couldn't have said it any better myself.
